Postextraction Alveolar Preservation and Use of the Crown of the Extracted Tooth as a Temporary Restoration.

Ranging from the extraction of teeth from anterior sector commitment to the loss of bone and soft tissues, alveolar preservation is a regenerative technique that employs biomaterials that induce the preservation of bone tissue and minimize resorption. Placement of provisional restorations at the defect site maintains the stability of the soft tissues and aesthetics at which the definitive restoration is found. The objective of this clinical case was alveolar preservation postextraction of the anterior tooth that presented a coronal fracture, placing the clinical crown of the extracted tooth as

Managing Ridge Resorption After Tooth Extraction Using Partial Extraction Therapy.

Achieving successful long-term esthetic outcomes in implant dentistry requires that the height and width of the facial or buccal alveolar bone wall and, subsequently, the peri-implant tissues be maintained. Partial extraction therapy (PET) can be used to reduce the risk of facio-lingual collapse after tooth loss and improve the preservation of alveolar bone height and blood supply. This article demonstrates the use of PET for treatment of a hopeless tooth in the esthetic zone. After removal of the fractured maxillary central incisor, an implant was placed and restored with excellent esthetic,

A rare case of osteogenesis imperfecta combined with complete tooth loss.

Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a heritable disorder of the connective tissue characterized by blue sclerae, osteoporosis and bone fragility. Dentinogenesis imperfecta type I is commonly seen in OI patients, but other dental impairments, such as tooth agenesis or complete tooth loss, are rarely reported for these patients. Here, we report the case of a 37-year-old female Chinese OI patient who experienced complete tooth loss before puberty. The patient has a family history of OI and her father has a history of tooth loss. She showed obvious OI phenotypes, including a dwarfed stature, blue scle

The dental pathology of southern sea otters (Enhydra lutris nereis).

Skulls (n = 1,205) of southern sea otters were examined macroscopically according to defined criteria. The museum specimens, acquired from s … imens (98.1%) contained at least one abraded tooth, while fewer young adults were affected (76.4%). Tooth fractures were uncommon, affecting 1,343 teeth (4.5%). Periapical lesions were associated with 409 teeth (1.3%) in a total of 176 specimens, and these would likely have caused considerable morbidity while the animals were alive.

Integrated management of mandibular fractures and traumatic dental injuries: a literature review and clinical algorithm proposal.

BACKGROUND: Mandibular fractures are among the most common maxillofacial injuries and are frequently associated with traumatic dental injuries (TDIs), creating combined skeletal, occlusal, periodontal, and pulpal treatment priorities. Integrated protocols addressing both the fracture and the dental component remain limited. METHODS: The present literature review was conducted by means of a structured search of PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, and Web of Science Core Collection from 2000 to 2026, complemented by manual reference-list screening. A structured Population, Intervention/Exposure, Comparison

[Asymptomatic third molars; To remove or not to remove?].

Three adult patients, ages 28 (female), 36 (male) and 53 (male), respectively, were referred by their dentists to an orofacial surgeon concerning problems with their third molars. With the woman, teeth 38 and 48 were removed. After the removal of tooth 38, a permanent periodontal attachment loss of the adjoining second molar occurred. With the second patient, retention of tooth 48 caused serious damage to the adjoining second molar, resulting in the loss of the tooth. At the time of removal, there was a question of increased risk of inflammatory complications and nerve damage. With the third p

Conservative treatment of complicated oblique crown-root fractures of molars: a report of five representative cases.

The five cases presented here describe a conservative treatment procedure for complicated crown-root fractures of molars with extensive loss of tooth structure. After the mobile crown-root fragments were extracted, the remaining crowns were restored at the juxtagingival level. The follow-up time ranged from two years, seven months, to four years. At the follow-up examinations, all of the teeth were asymptomatic and had healthy clinical appearances. There was no evidence of pockets related to fractures. The results of these cases show that complete periodontal healing is possible with conservat

Acute treatment of a concomitant horizontal root fracture and luxation of the coronal fragment of the right upper central incisor: a case report.

We report a case of a horizontal intra-alveolar root fracture between the middle and apical third of the upper right central incisor associated with an extrusive luxation of the coronal fragment, in a 24-year-old male patient. Twenty minutes after being accidentally hit by a metallic device, the patient's coronal portion was repositioned and splinted under local anesthesia. After that, we lost sight of the patient. One year later, the patient showed up. The splint was lost, the tooth showed physiological mobility and responded to pulp testing. Radiographs showed healing of the horizontal fract

Superior oblique muscle entrapment in orbital fracture presenting as acquired brown-like syndrome: a case report and review of literature.

Pediatric orbital trauma with fracture involving the junction of roof and medial wall leading to superior oblique entrapment is rare. Here the authors report a case of orbital fracture at the junction of roof and medial wall with entrapment of the superior oblique muscle presenting clinically as canine tooth syndrome which was surgically released. Postoperatively, the ocular motility improved, and the patient was relieved of diplopia. They recommend early surgical exploration in such cases, which lead to successful resolution of diplopia.

Secondary prevention of osteoporosis: when should a non-vertebral fracture be a trigger for action?

The burden of non-vertebral fractures is enormous. Hip fractures account for nearly 10% of all fractures (and a much greater proportion in the elderly), while wrist fractures may account for up to 23% of all limb fractures. The best available predictors of non-vertebral fracture risk are low BMD and a tendency to fall. Hip, forearm, proximal humerus and rib fractures have all been associated with low BMD, though ankle fracture is not strongly related to osteoporosis. Although clinical risk factors identify only about one-third of postmenopausal women at increased risk of osteoporotic fracture,

Replantation of a Permanent Tooth With a Curved Root From Infected Tooth Germ: A Case Report With a Four-Year Follow-Up.

Intentional reimplantation has long been supported by many clinicians as a last resort before tooth extraction. With the accumulation of data and the development of techniques, the survival rate of reimplantation has increased. However, although there have been many reports and studies on replantation for common causes such as root fracture, root resorption, inadequate root canal treatment, perforation, and apical periodontitis, the method of replantation in unusual cases is not yet clear, and many cases result in tooth extraction. In this report, we describe a special case in which a patient

Clinical practice: dental trauma.

Approximately 50% of children under the age of 15 are victims of various kinds of injuries in the orofacial region. Post-traumatic complications may occur, including crown discolouration, cervical root fracture, ankylosis, root resorption and tooth loss. The most severe complication after dental injury in primary dentition can affect the developing permanent tooth germ, and various consequences may be seen several years later when the permanent tooth erupts. In the permanent dentition, the most severe dental injury affects the surrounding alveolar bone structure and will lead to loss of the to

Malignant infantile osteopetrosis: dental effects in paediatric patients. Case reports.

AIM: Malignant Infantile Osteopetrosis is a hereditary pathology caused due to osteoclastic cells which are incapable of carrying out their functions and hence do not resorb osseous tissue where required. Thus the consequence is that during growth phase, the medullary cavities and nervous tissue cavities do not undergo sufficient growth and the corresponding organs do not develop adequately. The aim of this study is to outline the role of the pediatric dentist who has to carry out protocols of primary, secondary, tertiary prevention intervening at many levels. Clinical features and dental effe

Retrospective case series analysis of the factors determining immediate implant placement.

Implant placement at the time of extraction has become an acceptable treatment option. The formation of a restorative treatment plan frequently requires the removal of questionable and hopeless teeth. This retrospective case series analysis reports the reasons for tooth removal before immediate implant placement and provides a rationale for removing questionable and hopeless teeth. Root length is also analyzed as related to tooth loss. Between September 1986 and December 1998, 460 teeth were removed from 282 patients. Reasons for removal were advanced periodontal disease, endodontic complicati

Radiographic, Histologic, and Biomechanical Evaluation of Combined Application of Platelet-rich Fibrin with Blood Clot in Regenerative Endodontics.

INTRODUCTION: No in vivo study has been reported on the mechanical reinforcement of a tooth after regenerative endodontic treatment (RET). The present work aimed to evaluate the concurrent use of platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) with a blood clot (BC) in RET concerning periapical healing, root development, and tooth structural reinforcement. METHODS: In our study, 24 premolars from 3 beagle dogs were assigned into control, BC, and PRF + BC groups. Periapical healing was monitored with quantitative measurements of root elongation and thickening radiographically. Tooth biomechanical integrity was ass

Management of recurrent fracture of central incisor with internal resorption using light transmitting (luminex) post.

The normal root canal anatomy may be altered in various pathological processes and making it very difficult and at times impossible to achieve ideal obturation by normal methods. Internal resorption is one among them. There are several treatment protocols advised for this pathological condition. A crown-root fracture is defined as a fracture involving enamel, dentin and cementum and accounts for 5% of all traumatic injuries to the permanent dentition. In anterior teeth, these fractures are usually caused by direct trauma and often complicated in fully erupted teeth. In cases where the fracture

[Injuries to the facial portion of the skull and their late effects in children and juveniles - a 10-year analysis (author's transl)].

A 10-year analysis comprising a total of 534 patients was used to study the histories of 192 puerile and juvenile patients with maxillofacial injuries. The proportion of children up to ten and fifteen years of age was 11.4 percent and 16.1 percent, respectively. Clinical and roentgenological reexaminations could be made of 139 patients. Typical fracture localizations and the frequency of late effects observed in the facial skeleton and dental system are discussed. It was possible for late damage to former tooth germs in the cleft of fracture to be observed in every second patient. Disturbances

Biomechanical behavior of posterior metal-free cantilever fixed dental prostheses: effect of material and retainer design.

OBJECTIVE: To study the fracture resistance and stress distribution pattern of translucent zirconia and fiber-reinforced composite cantilever resin-bonded fixed dental prostheses (RPFDPs) with two retainer designs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty human mandibular molars were divided into two groups according to the retainer design. The restorations included a premolar pontic and 2 retainer designs: (D1) inlay ring retainer and (D2) lingual coverage retainer. Each main group was then divided according to the material used (n = 10): zirconia (Z) or fiber-reinforced composite (FRC) (F). Restoration

A Decade-Long Follow-Up of Supernumerary Tooth Leading Up to Cemental Tear: A Pediatric Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Cemental tear (CeT), a detachment of the root cementum, is rarely reported in pediatric populations and often misdiagnosed as root fractures or endodontic-periodontal lesions. CASE REPORT: This is the first documented instance of CeT in a healthy 12-year-old female, likely a result of the extraction of a supernumerary tooth (mesiodens). The patient had a supernumerary tooth diagnosed at age 2 that was extracted at age 10. Radiograph after 1 year of supernumerary tooth extraction revealed a linear radiopacity adjacent to the left maxillary central incisor, diagnosed as CeT by speci
