Dental prostheses and tooth-related factors.

OBJECTIVES: This narrative review summarizes the current evidence about the role that the fabrication and presence of dental prostheses and tooth-related factors have on the initiation and progression of gingivitis and periodontitis. FINDINGS: Placement of restoration margins within the junctional epithelium and supracrestal connective tissue attachment can be associated with gingival inflammation and, potentially, recession. The presence of fixed prostheses finish lines within the gingival sulcus or the wearing of partial, removable dental prostheses does not cause gingivitis if patients are

Dental Caries diagnosis from bitewing images using convolutional neural networks.

BACKGROUND: Dental caries, also known as tooth decay, is a widespread and long-standing condition that affects people of all ages. This ailment is caused by bacteria that attach themselves to teeth and break down sugars, creating acid that gradually wears away at the tooth structure. Tooth discoloration, pain, and sensitivity to hot or cold foods and drinks are common symptoms of tooth decay. Although this condition is prevalent among all age groups, it is especially prevalent in children with baby teeth. Early diagnosis of dental caries is critical to preventing further decay and avoiding cos

Role of social capital on edentulism, social participation and cognition.

OBJECTIVES: The role of social factors in the relationship between tooth loss and cognitive function remains underexplored. This cross-sectional study investigates whether social participation mediates the relationship between tooth loss and cognitive function, and whether contextual social capital moderates these associations among older Chinese adults. METHODS: Data from 7796 Chinese adults aged ≥65 was obtained from the 2017-18 Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS). Tooth loss was self-reported and cognitive function was measured using the Chinese version of the Mini-Mental

Changes in the functional condition of the masticatory muscles with increased teeth abrasion.

OBJECTIVE: Introduction: The term "pathological abrasion" (increased abrasion) can be described as a loss of tooth hard tissue on the occlus … oup (30 patients aged from 18 to 60 years) which had intact dental rows with any signs of increased tooth wear. The investigated group consisted of 25 patients, aged from 18 to 60 years. Depending on the complex treatment, the patients of the second group were divided into two subgroups. Subgroup 2A - (10 patients) with increased abrasion of tooth hard tissu …

The association between oral hygiene and head and neck cancer: a meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Oral hygiene has been suspected to contribute to the aetiology of head and neck cancer (HNC). Based on the meta-analysis, we evaluated the impact of oral hygiene on head and neck cancer (HNC) and its survival. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Relevant case-control and cohort studies reporting survival data, oral hygiene data were searched via PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science databases. The odds ratios (ORs), hazard ratios (HRs), and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were used. Subgroup analysis was performed. RESULTS: Oral hygiene was associated with HNC. Tooth brushing ≥2

Mouthguard Use Effect on the Biomechanical Response of an Ankylosed Maxillary Central Incisor during a Traumatic Impact: A 3-Dimensional Finite Element Analysis.

(1) Background: Trauma is a very common experience in contact sports; however, there is an absence of data regarding the effect of athletes wearing mouthguards (MG) associated with ankylosed maxillary central incisor during a traumatic impact. (2) Methods: To evaluate the stress distribution in the bone and teeth in this situation, models of maxillary central incisor were created containing cortical bone, trabecular bone, soft tissue, root dentin, enamel, periodontal ligament, and antagonist teeth were modeled. One model received a MG with 4-mm thickness. Both models were subdivided into finit

Mandibular molar root morphology in Neanderthals and Late Pleistocene and recent Homo sapiens.

Neanderthals have a distinctive suite of dental features, including large anterior crown and root dimensions and molars with enlarged pulp cavities. Yet, there is little known about variation in molar root morphology in Neanderthals and other recent and fossil members of Homo. Here, we provide the first comprehensive metric analysis of permanent mandibular molar root morphology in Middle and Late Pleistocene Homo neanderthalensis, and Late Pleistocene (Aterian) and recent Homo sapiens. We specifically address the question of whether root form can be used to distinguish between these groups and

Longevity of frictional telescopic crowns in the severely reduced dentition: 3-year results of a longitudinal prospective clinical study.

OBJECTIVES: The longevity of frictional telescopic crowns (FTC) in severely reduced dentitions with 1 to 3 remaining teeth per jaw has not yet been studied prospectively and exclusively. Aims of this study were to estimate risks of telescope loss and abutment tooth loss and to determine abutment tooth mobility over time. METHOD AND MATERIALS: A total of 74 patients with severely reduced dentitions received 82 telescopic removable partial dentures (TRPDs) retained with 173 FTCs. Dentures were reexamined after 1 week and 3, 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, and 36 months. Tooth mobility was monitored with Per

Effects of orthodontic aligners on the ecological report of awake bruxism.

BACKGROUND: The demand for orthodontic treatment with aligners has recently increased, but their effects on awake bruxism (AB) behaviours have to be evaluated yet. OBJECTIVES: This investigation assessed if aligners can affect oral behaviours (i.e. tooth contact, teeth clenching, teeth grinding and mandible bracing) that are related with the AB spectrum. METHODS: The investigation was performed in a sample of 32 consecutively recruited healthy adult patients who required orthodontic treatment. The study protocol involved three different sessions of 1-week monitoring without aligners, with pa

Persistence of range of motion in dorsiflexion, when the triceps surae muscles weaken, worsens stance and gait in Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease. A case report.

Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease is a genetically heterogeneous disorder, characterized by length dependent degeneration of motor and sensory nerve fibers. The variability in clinical severity is typical, and is considered the result of environmental factors interacting with the genotype. We report the case of 2 sisters who present the same muscle involvement, with complete atrophy below the knees, but a very different degree of disability: the milder affected sister can walk independently for 1 km, the more severe for 50 m only. The factor, responsible for the different functional impairment, is t

Non-extraction Approach in a Borderline Case of a Growing Patient: A Case Report.

This case presents the effective non-extraction orthodontic treatment of a 13-year-old boy with crowding in both upper and lower arches and deep bite. The patient's chief complaint was irregularly placed maxillary anterior teeth. The active treatment duration lasted for 10 months, which resulted in the successful alleviation of arch crowding and correction of the deep bite without the extraction of any sound erupted tooth. Posttreatment, all of the patient's chief complaints were relieved. Essix retainers were fitted post-debonding, with instructions for the patient to wear them for the subseq

The cranial osteology and feeding ecology of the metriorhynchid crocodylomorph genera Dakosaurus and Plesiosuchus from the late Jurassic of Europe.

BACKGROUND: Dakosaurus and Plesiosuchus are characteristic genera of aquatic, large-bodied, macrophagous metriorhynchid crocodylomorphs. Recent studies show that these genera were apex predators in marine ecosystems during the latter part of the Late Jurassic, with robust skulls and strong bite forces optimized for feeding on large prey. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Here we present comprehensive osteological descriptions and systematic revisions of the type species of both genera, and in doing so we resurrect the genus Plesiosuchus for the species Dakosaurus manselii. Both species are diag
