A case of pyolaryngocele presented as a lateral cervical mass that produced acute dyspnea requiring tracheotomy. The diagnosis was by direct laryngoscopy, which revealed outflow of purulent material with pressure on the tumor, and was confirmed by CT. Broad-spectrum antibiotic treatment was given and the pyolaryngocele was excised by lateral extramucosal tyrotomy. The literature on laryngocele and pyolaryngocele was reviewed.

We successfully performed aortic root replacement and partial aortic arch replacement by a T-shaped sternotomy at the second intercostal space in a patient who had undergone tracheotomy for respiratory insufficiency and cardiac failure caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus pneumonia during preservation treatment of chronic type A aortic dissection and aortic regurgitation.

Subcutaneous peripharyngeal emphysema and pneumomediastinum are rare complications in postoperative patients after several types of surgery (orthognathic, laryngeal, tracheotomy and oropharyngeal). We report a case of subcutaneous and peripharyngeal emphysema after bilateral tonsillectomy in a 43-year-old male. Air or anesthetic gases spread to the neck, mediastinum, abdomen, or pleural cavity.

For ten years, uvulo-palato-pharyngoplasty has become the preferred surgical treatment for snoring. Techniques, variations, postoperative followings, complications, results are reported. For sleep apnea syndrome, other surgical procedures can also be considered: tracheotomy, adenoido-tonsillectomy, nasal surgery, hyo-tongue surgery, maxillomandibular surgery. In children, adenoido-tonsillectomy is usually the adequate treatment.

A patient presented with neck impalement after a traffic accident. Respiratory arrest demanded immediate tracheal intubation, which was impossible as a wooden splinter had partially obstructed the pharynx and prevented laryngoscopy. An oesophageal tracheal Combitube airway was inserted successfully and the patient's lungs were ventilated adequately until tracheotomy was performed.

Dysphagia, or swallowing difficulty, is a common problem following severe traumatic brain injury and is associated with an increased risk of malnutrition and pneumonia. Management of patients with dysphagia following head injury is complicated by the presence of cognitive, communication, and behavioral impairments. The purpose of this review article is to help physicians taking care of traumatic brain injury patients understand and manage dysphagia. The article reviews the history of the study of swallowing, stages of swallowing, impairments of swallowing, neural control of swallowing, and the

The authors suggest preventive minitracheotomy as a support technique in difficult endotracheal intubation, and report their experience in a case of surgical operation to remove a bony neoformation of C1 and C2 posterior arcs. Endotracheal intubation, difficult because no part of the glottis could be seen, was made possible by preventive minitracheotomy. In this way sedation, myorelaxation and excellent oxygenation during following manoeuvre that resulted atraumatic, were obtained. The small cannula of minitracheotomy was maintained closed during the operation and open for 24 hours thereafter …

Cricotracheostomy is a useful surgical procedure for opening the airway in cases where conventional tracheotomy is difficult. This is a safe and easy technique involving removal of the anterior portion of the cricoid cartilage. Herein, we report the case of a patient with difficulty in neck extension due to severe kyphosis, who underwent cricotracheostomy. A 65-year-old woman developed dyspnea and was transported to our hospital. SpO2 was 60% (room air) and endotracheal intubation was performed. She was managed on ventilator. However, weaning off the ventilator was difficult, and endotracheal …

ObjectivesHematoma in the retropharyngeal space (RPS) is a life-threatening condition that leads to rapid airway obstruction. However, the indication for airway management remains unclear. Additionally, the requirement for surgical hematoma evacuation remains undetermined. Therefore, we attempt to suggest some criteria for the management of hematoma in such cases.MethodsWe report three cases of hematoma in the RPS wherein one patient was treated without surgery and the other two underwent tracheotomy followed by hematoma evacuation.ResultsWe found that airway management should be based on whet…

INTRODUCTION: The brachiocephalic trunk (BCT), also known as the "anonymous artery" constitutes the first branch of the aortic arch that bifurcates at the level of the right sternoclavicular joint into the RCCA and the RSA. Anatomical variations of the origin and the trajectory of BCT are of vital clinical significance since they constitute major risk-factors of hemorrhage when performing tracheotomy, surgeries at the anatomic area of the neck as in the presented case.

Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) is a human herpes virus-8 (HHV-8)-associated angioproliferative disorder, and its occurrence may be favored by human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and iatrogenic immunosuppression. It has also been postulated that a chronic inflammatory disease of the skin can pave the way to its development. KS generally involves mucosal and cutaneous sites, including the head and neck. An oropharyngeal location is quite common, but laryngeal involvement with possible upper airway obstruction and respiratory distress requiring tracheotomy is rare, and no hypopharyngeal locations…

A consecutive series of 11 patients presenting with obstructing laryngeal neoplasms over an 8-month period have been treated by laser debulking of the tumour in order to avoid a tracheotomy. Providing that all members of the team are experienced in microlaryngeal laser surgery, this technique can be safely and effectively used in the management of obstructing laryngeal neoplasms.

A 10-year retrospective study of 30 adults suffering from acute epiglottitis is reported. Two clinical forms of onset were noted: gradual and accelerated. Abscess formation was present in 27% of cases. None of the patients required intubation or tracheotomy. In contrast to the accepted interventionist approach in children, conservative management in adults is recommended.

BACKGROUND: Post-stroke dysphagia is highly prevalent, particularly among severe cases requiring tracheotomy, imposing significant physical and financial burdens on patients. Currently, targeted interventions specifically designed to improve swallowing function in this tracheotomised stroke population remain limited.
METHODS: This study enrolled 47 subacute stroke patients with tracheotomy and dysphagia, randomized into control and trial groups. Both groups received personalized swallowing rehabilitation training, with the control group undergoing conventional air-pulse stimulation and the tr…

They also showed higher ASA grades, longer operations, greater blood loss, and more frequent tracheotomy (all p < 0.05). Most deaths occurred postoperatively, with medical complications predominating. Independent predictors of POM were comorbidities, advanced stage, ASA grade <III, blood loss >600 ml, and tracheotomy.
CONCLUSION: Perioperative mortali …
