BACKGROUND: Despite mounting evidence linking allergic rhinitis (AR) to air pollution, it remains unclear which major air pollutant(s) and critical window(s) of exposure play important roles in children's AR.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the effects of intrauterine and early postnatal exposure to outdoor air pollution on children with doctor-diagnosed allergic rhinitis (DDAR).
METHODS: A retrospective cohort study involving 8689 kindergarten children was conducted in Changsha, China, from 2019 to 2020. A questionnaire survey was conducted to collect information on the health status of children and

OBJECTIVE: Recent studies suggest that air pollution plays a role in type 2 diabetes (T2D) incidence and mortality. The underlying physiological mechanisms have yet to be established. We hypothesized that air pollution adversely affects insulin sensitivity and secretion and serum lipid levels.
RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Participants were selected from BetaGene (n = 1,023), a study of insulin resistance and pancreatic β-cell function in Mexican Americans. All participants underwent DXA and oral and intravenous glucose tolerance tests and completed dietary and physical activity questionnaires

Adverse health effects associated with fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in urban areas can occur even at PM2.5 concentrations below current regulatory limits - a situation increasingly observed in high-income countries. However, the underlying biological mechanisms remain poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the molecular and cellular responses in human bronchial epithelial cells exposed to low PM2.5 using a novel methodology. We first identified specific meteorological conditions that favor low PM2.5 mass concentrations (<10 μg m-3) combined with high traffic-related aerosol emiss

UNLABELLED: I searched the National Institutes of Health MEDLINE database through January 2017 for long-term studies of morbidity and air pollution and cataloged them with respect to cardiovascular, respiratory, cancer, diabetes, hospitalization, neurological, and pregnancy-birth endpoints. The catalog is presented as an online appendix. Associations with PM2.5 (particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter <2.5 μm), PM10 (PM with an aerodynamic diameter <10 μm), and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) were evaluated most frequently among the 417 ambient air quality studies identified. Associations with

A correlation of respiratory diseases to traffic related air pollution and noise was observed in an interview study. Since in that study the exposure was subjectively assessed, in the present field study nitrogen dioxide as indicator for vehicle exhausts and the mean night-time noise level were measured outside the children's windows in representative locations. Based on these measurements each child was placed in one of the following categories: low, medium or high traffic immission (ambient emissions). The physician contacts due to bronchitis of 68 children were assessed retrospectively from

Urban populations are exposed to a multitude of traffic-related air pollutants during daily commutes. This study assessed commuters' exposure to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) during bus, motorcycle, and bicycle commuting, and estimated the VOC inhalation dose. Benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene (BTEX) were the main compounds detected, contributing 58 - 68% to ΣVOC (sum of the concentrations of all detected VOCs) in different travel modes. The mean ΣVOC exposure concentration was higher for motorcyclists than for cyclists and bus commuters. However, due to cyclists' higher minute ve

INTRODUCTION: Epidemiological studies are highlighting the negative effects of the exposure to air pollution on children's neurodevelopment. However, most studies assessed children's neurodevelopment using neuropsychological tests or questionnaires. Using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to precisely measure global and region-specific brain development would provide details of brain morphology and connectivity. This would help us understand the observed cognitive and behavioral changes related to air pollution exposure. Moreover, most studies assessed only a few air pollutants. This project in

Air pollution is the leading environmental cause of disease burden worldwide and is increasingly recognized as a potent driver of accelerated biological aging. Rather than acting through organ-specific toxicity alone, air pollutants appear to affect the fundamental hallmarks of aging itself, including oxidative stress, chronic inflammation, epigenetic dysregulation, telomere attrition, mitochondrial dysfunction, and cellular senescence. The pollutants of greatest concern are fine and ultrafine particulate matter (PM2.5, PM0.1), traffic-related air pollution, and household combustion emissions.

UNLABELLED: : Air pollution has been a matter of great concern globally because of the associated health risks to individuals. The situation is getting worse in developing countries with more urbanization, industrialization and more importantly the rapidly growing population posing a threat to human life in the form of pulmonary, cardiovascular, carcinogenic or asthmatic diseases by accumulating toxic pollutants, harmful gases, metals, hydrocarbons etc.
OBJECTIVE: The present study was undertaken to assess the magnitude of ambient air pollutants and their human health risks like respiratory a

BACKGROUND: Residential exposure to air pollution (AP) has been shown to activate the immune system (IS). Although innate immune responses to AP have been studied extensively, investigations on the adaptive IS are scarce.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to investigate the association between short- to long-term AP exposure and polyclonal free light chains (FLC) produced by plasma cells.
METHODS: We used repeated data from three examinations (t0: 2000-2003; t1: 2006-2008; and t2: 2011-2015) of the population-based German Heinz Nixdorf Recall cohort of initially 4,814 participants (45-75

We examined the association between ambient air pollution exposure and risk of spontaneous abortion (SAB) using Georgia state-wide fetal death records from 2005-2014. Each SAB case was matched to four non-SAB pregnancies by maternal residential county and conception month. Daily concentrations of ten pollutants were estimated and linked to maternal residential census tracts. Cox regression was used to estimate hazard ratios (HR) across four prenatal exposure windows (first month, weekly, cumulative weekly average over the first trimester, cumulative weekly average over the second trimester). Air pollution is defined as the presence of noxious substances in the air at levels that impose a health hazard. Thus, there has been long-standing interest in the possible role of indoor and outdoor air pollutants on the development of respiratory disease. In this regard, asthma has been of particular interest but many studies have also been conducted to explore the relationship between air pollution, allergic rhinitis, and atopic dermatitis. Traffic-related air pollutants or TRAP refers to a broad group of pollutants including elemental carbon, black soot, nitrogen dioxide (NO2), nitric oxid

Air pollution and climate change are potential drivers for the increasing burden of allergic diseases. The molecular mechanisms by which air pollutants and climate parameters may influence allergic diseases, however, are complex and elusive. This article provides an overview of physical, chemical and biological interactions between air pollution, climate change, allergens, adjuvants and the immune system, addressing how these interactions may promote the development of allergies. We reviewed and synthesized key findings from atmospheric, climate, and biomedical research. The current state of k

Constituents of air pollution, the ultrafine particles (UFP) with a diameter of ≤0.1 μm, are considerably related to traffic emissions. Several studies link air pollution to Alzheimer's disease (AD), yet the exact relationship between the two remains poorly understood. Mitochondria are known targets of environmental toxicants, and their dysfunction is associated with neurodegenerative diseases. The olfactory mucosa (OM), located at the rooftop of the nasal cavity, is directly exposed to the environment and in contact with the brain. Mounting evidence suggests that the UFPs can impact the brain

As policymakers increasingly promote emission control technologies and the use of electric vehicles, urban traffic pollution patterns are shifting. Traffic-related nitrogen-containing organic compounds (TNOCs), which represent a critical yet underexplored group of chemicals, have not been comprehensively monitored in humans, particularly among sensitive populations such as pregnant women. In this study, we assessed the internal exposure of pregnant women to 20 emerging and legacy TNOCs by analyzing urine samples after deconjugation (n = 400). The results revealed a frequent detection of TNOCs

BACKGROUND: Ambient air pollution accelerates lung function decline among adults, however, there are limited data about its role in the development and progression of early stages of interstitial lung disease.
AIMS: To evaluate associations of long-term exposure to traffic and ambient pollutants with odds of interstitial lung abnormalities (ILA) and progression of ILA on repeated imaging.
METHODS: We ascertained ILA on chest CT obtained from 2618 Framingham participants from 2008 to 2011. Among 1846 participants who also completed a cardiac CT from 2002 to 2005, we determined interval ILA pr

Outdoor air pollution at levels occurring in many urban areas around the world has substantial adverse effects on health. Children in general, and children with asthma in particular, are sensitive to the adverse effects of outdoor air pollutants, including ozone, nitrogen oxides, and respirable particulate matter. A growing number of studies also show that children living in environments near traffic have increased risks of new-onset asthma, asthma symptoms, exacerbations, school absences, and asthma-related hospitalizations. The large population of children exposed to high levels of outdoor a

CONTEXT: Exposure to elevated concentrations of traffic-related air pollutants in the near-road environment is associated with numerous adverse human health effects, including childhood cancer, which has been increasing since 1975. Results of individual epidemiologic studies have been inconsistent. Therefore, a meta-analysis was performed to examine the association between residential traffic exposure and childhood cancer.
EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: Studies published between January 1980 and July 2011 were retrieved from a systematic search of 18 bibliographic databases. Nine studies meeting the i

OBJECTIVES: First, we present a general analytical approach to estimating the association between medium-term changes in air pollution and health across small areas. As a specific illustration, we then applied the approach to data on London residents from a 4-year period to test whether reductions in traffic-related air pollution were associated with reductions in cardio-respiratory hospital admissions.
METHODS: A binomial distribution was used to model change in admissions over time in each small area, which was measured as the proportion of admissions in 2003-2004 out of admissions over all
