The present study was undertaken to investigate the protective effect and possible mechanism of aqueous extract from Phyllanthus amarus Schum. et. Thonn. (PA) on ethanol-induced rat hepatic injury. In the in vitro study, PA (1-4 mg/ml) increased %MTT reduction assay and decreased the release of transaminases (AST and ALT) in rat primary cultured hepatocytes being treated with ethanol. Hepatotoxic parameters studied in vivo included serum transaminases (AST and ALT), serum triglyceride (STG), hepatic triglyceride (HTG), tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha), interleukin 1 beta (IL-1beta), tog…

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is a virus that infects both normal and compromised hosts. In normal hosts, CMV presents most often as an "infectious … CMV CAP. CMV infection was suspected because of 2 nonspecific laboratory findings: increased serum transaminases and atypical lymphocytes in the peripheral smear. SLE is a multisystem autoimmune disorder that spares the liver. Therefore, in a patient with SLE who experiences an SLE flare, increased serum transaminases should suggest the possibility of CMV. A 16-year-old girl presented to the emergency department with intermittent fevers and worsening abdominal pain of 5 weeks duration. She had a history of travel to a less developed country and exposure to possible infectious diseases. Abdominal imaging and blood tests revealed diffuse mesenteric lymphadenopathy, elevated transaminases, and elevation of inflammatory markers. Gastroesophageal and colon endoscopies revealed gastric ulcers, and the patient was discharged with a presumptive diagnosis of systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis given the lymphadenopathy seen on imaging, serositis, sacr…

Autoimmune hepatitis is a chronic liver disease of unknown etiology. The diagnosis is based on the exclusion of other liver diseases such as drug-induced liver disease, alcohol liver disease, viral liver diseases and so on, characterizing by elevation of transaminases, hypergammaglobulinemia, auto antibodies and the histological features of interface hepatitis and plasma cells infiltration. However, deep cholestatic jaundice as the initial presentation, with elevated serum transaminases one month later, is rare in autoimmune hepatitis. We described a case of type 1 autoimmune hepatitis with de…

BACKGROUND: Transaminase and creatinine elevations have been well described in adults treated with remdesivir for COVID-19. It is hypothesized that a similar safety profile exists in children with COVID-19 treated with remdesivir, but available data are limited, especially in children < 12 months. The primary aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and timing of elevations in transaminases and creatinine in children with COVID-19 who were treated with remdesivir.
METHODS: This was a retrospective, observational cohort study including all pediatric patients admitted to a single, free…

BACKGROUND: Mildly elevated levels of transaminase and/or immunoglobulin G (IgG) are common in patients with primary biliary cholangitis (PBC). It is still unclear whether adding immunosuppressive therapy to ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) benefits those patients who are not fulfilling the diagnostic criteria of PBC with autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) features.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the efficacy of adding immunosuppressive therapy to UDCA for patients with PBC and autoimmune phenomena but not fulfilling the diagnostic criteria of PBC with AIH features.
DESIGN: This is a retrospective-prospective coh

Four white Fulani calves were splenectomized and experimentally infected with Babesia bigemina by allowing about 2000 freshly hatched infective larvae of Boophilus decoloratus to feed on them. Blood samples were collected to determine serum glutamate pyruvate transaminase, serum glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase, alkaline phosphatase and bilirubin levels. A significant rise in the level of alkaline phosphatase for up to two weeks was observed. There were also increases in the serum glutamate pyruvate transaminase and serum glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase levels although the level fell af

BACKGROUND: Infectious mononucleosis, a common disease in children and young adults, is often accompanied by elevated transaminase levels and rarely, liver failure. This study aimed to determine whether adenosine deaminase is a marker of severity in children with infectious mononucleosis, especially those with elevated alanine transaminase levels.
METHODS: This case-control study was conducted at the Children's Hospital of Soochow University. A total of 104 children with infectious mononucleosis and 50 controls with other acute infections and fever, tonsillitis, or lymphadenitis, were enrolle

Serum enzyme profile was studied in 74 patients with Tuberculoid leprosy and compared with that of 100 healthy controls. The enzymes studied were Aspartate and Alanine Transaminase, Isocitric dehydrogenase, Alkaline phosphatase Choline esterase and Creatine kinase. Both Transaminase and Alkaline phosphatase were in general within normal limits in Tuberculoid leprosy. Creatine kinase levels were found to be significantly elevated. In some of these cases raised levels of Serum Aspartate Transaminase was also noticed--evidence for skeletal muscle destruction. Mild increases in Isocitric dehydroge

Elevated transaminases occur in up to 17% in patients with inflammatory bowel disease. Primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) is an important cause for elevated liver enzymes in these patients whereas autoimmune hepatitis is rare. Both diseases can overlap. We report two patients with an autoimmune hepatitis. One patient had Crohn's disease and arthritis with morphological liver changes typical for autoimmune hepatitis but without the characteristic autoantibody pattern. The other patient suffered from ulcerative colitis. He had antinuclear and antiactin antibodies as in autoimmune hepatitis typ…

Mildly elevated transaminases are often observed in anorexia nervosa patients, but severe hepatitis is less common. We suggest that hypoperfusion is the pathogenetic factor that causes severe hepatitis in a patient with a very poor nutritional status and present an overview of previous case reports. In our patient, early initiation of intravenous fluids resulted in rapid recovery of the liver test abnormalities, despite minimal oral caloric intake, the refusal of enteral feeding and the development of a hypoglycemic coma. Two months after admission, transaminases had normalized. Reversible sev…

The usefulness of the serum aspartate aminotransferase (AST): serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) ratio as a guide to the presence of alcoholism was evaluated in four groups of patients. In alcoholics with elevated transaminases the mean AST:ALT ratio was found to be 1.50 (95% confidence interval (CI): 1.49-1.51), in hepatitis B infection 0.51 (95% CI: 0.50-0.52), in liver cancer 1.25 (95% CI: 1.20-1.29), and in nonmalignant obstructive jaundice 0.59 (95% CI: 0.57-0.61). In alcoholics with normal transaminases the AST:ALT ratio was 1.64 (95% CI: 1.61-1.67). The combination of an AST:ALT ratio…
