Parasites of the Blue Antimora, Antimora rostrata and Slender Codling, Halargyreus johnsonii (Gadiformes: Moridae), in the Northwestern Atlantic.

PURPOSE: The blue antimora, Antimora rostrata and slender codling, Halargyreus johnsonii (Gadoformes: Moridae) are common representatives of deep-water marine demersal fish fauna. This paper focuses on infections in blue antimora caught in the northwestern Atlantic region, but also reports observations on the parasites of slender codling obtained from a limited number of specimens from the same location. METHODS: Standard methods of parasitological examination, fixation and staining were used. In addition, a genetic analysis of the found acanthocephalans was performed to clarify their taxonom

Clonorchis sinensis and Opisthorchis viverrini: development of a mitochondrial-based multiplex PCR for their identification and discrimination.

We report a single, one-step PCR approach for detection and discrimination of Clonorchis sinensis and Opisthorchis viverrini in different life-stage forms (adults, metacercariae, and eggs) from fish intermediate hosts and from infected patients. Primers designed for species-specific PCR, amplifying portions of the mitochondrial (mt) genome, were also suitable for a multiplex PCR. The latter was a single, one-step reaction under high stringency conditions, using simultaneously 2 pairs of primers (1 pair for C. sinensis--product size 612 bp, and 1 pair for O. viverrini--product size 1357 bp). Oxysterols of helminth parasites and pathogenesis of foodborne hepatic trematodiasis caused by Opisthorchis and Fasciola species.

The foodborne trematodiases refer to a cluster of zoonotic neglected tropical diseases caused by trematodes, with transmission involving ingestion of contaminated plants, fishes, and crustaceans. Over 40 million people are infected with foodborne trematodes and 750 million are at risk of infection. From a public health point of view, important species include Clonorchis sinensis, Opisthorchis viverrini, Opisthorchis felineus, Fasciola hepatica, and Fasciola gigantica. Infection with C. sinensis and O. viverrini is classified as a group 1 biological carcinogen and a major risk factor for cholan

Critical analysis of molluscicide application in schistosomiasis control programs in Brazil.

In Brazil, Biomphalaria glabrata, B. tenagophila, and B. straminea are naturally infected by the trematode Schistosoma mansoni, the causative agent of schistosomiasis. Despite decades of governmental efforts through official control programs, schistosomiasis remains an important public health problem in the country: thousands of people are infected with the trematode each year and millions live in endemic areas. The World Health Organization recommends using a combination of molluscicide (niclosamide) and mass chemotherapy to control the transmission of schistosomiasis, with this treatment suc

CLINICOPATHOLOGIC CORRELATES OF FASCIOLIASIS IN TWO EASTERN GREY KANGAROOS (MACROPUS GIGANTEUS).

Infection with the introduced trematode Fasciola hepatica was associated with anemia, mild to moderate azotemia, hypoalbuminemia, and elevated liver enzymes and creatine kinase values in two free-ranging eastern grey kangaroos (Macropus giganteus). Both kangaroos were euthanized because of the severity of clinical signs associated with infection. Histopathologic changes included severe cholangiohepatitis, biliary hyperplasia, and fibrosis. Hepatic, splenic, and intestinal amyloidosis was present in one kangaroo and hepatic abscessation in the other; neither histologic change has been reported

Partial Hepatectomy for the Resistant Fasciola Hepatica Infection in a Child.

Fascioliasis is an emerging and important chronic parasitic disease caused by two trematode liver fluke species: Fasciola hepatica (F. hepatica) and Fasciola gigantica (F. gigantica) infecting several herbivorous mammals including cattle, goats, sheep, and humans. We report a 9-year-old girl who suffered from F. hepatica infection and underwent right hepatectomy because of increasing abdominal pain resistant to anthelmintic chemotherapy. When anthelmintic drug treatment is not effective and abdominal pain persists, surgical resection including hepatectomy should be kept in mind for resistant F

Praziquantel: a major advance in anthelminthic therapy.

Praziquantel recently has been approved in the United States for use against a broad range of trematodes and cestodes. The drug is highly effective against all Schistosoma species that infect humans as well as other flukes and tapeworms, including the larval stage of Taenia solium, which causes cysticercosis. In addition, praziquantel is relatively nontoxic, well accepted by patients, and can be given orally in one dose or several doses in a single day. Praziquantel lowers or abolishes the threshold for treating persons with these infections, and, if costs can be contained, may help in the glo

Use of praziquantel to control platyhelminth parasites of fish.

Fish are common definitive and intermediate hosts for a variety of parasitic flatworms. In unstressed wild populations, parasitic infections often go unnoticed and are perceived to represent a lesser threat to fish health. In contrast, platyhelminth parasitism of captive fish often results in decreased weight gain and increased mortality which often necessitates chemotherapeutic treatment. The presence of platyhelminth parasites in fish tissues is not only unappealing but in some cases also represents a threat to human health. In veterinary medicine, one of the most commonly used agents with a

Identification and characterization of Paragonimus westermani leucine aminopeptidase.

Paragonimus westermani is a tissue-invading trematode parasite that causes inflammatory lung disease as well as systemic infections including cerebral invasion in carnivorous mammals. While aminopeptidases play important roles in trematodes in the catabolism of host hemoglobin, an essential source of nutrient for the parasite, little is known about aminopeptidase in Paragonimus. Presently, we isolated a cDNA encoding a 58 kDa P. westermani leucine aminopeptidase (PwLAP). Deduced amino acid sequence of PwLAP exhibited significant sequence homology with LAP from Schistosoma spp. and Fasciola hep

Prevalence and identification of metacercarial infections in freshwater fish in Hunan Province.

Fish-borne trematodes are prevalent parasites affecting about 80 million people globally. This study aims to identify the common trematode metacercariae species in freshwater fish from Hunan Province, China. We collected 521 fish representing 23 species from seven cities, spanning the major water systems: the Xiangjiang River, Dongting Lake, and the Liuyang River. Metacercariae were detected using compression and artificial digestion methods. Common metacercarial forms were identified using morphological and molecular tools. The internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region was amplified by PCR, an

Lepocreadiidae (Trematoda) associated with gelatinous zooplankton (Cnidaria and Ctenophora) and fishes in Australian and Japanese waters.

We examined gelatinous zooplankton from off eastern Australia for lepocreadiid trematode metacercariae. From 221 specimens of 17 species of cnidarian medusae and 218 specimens of four species of ctenophores, infections were found in seven cnidarian and two ctenophore species. Metacercariae were distinguished using cox1 mtDNA, ITS2 rDNA and morphology. We identified three species of Prodistomum Linton, 1910 [P. keyam Bray & Cribb, 1996, P. orientale (Layman, 1930), and Prodistomum Type 3], two species of Opechona Looss, 1907 [O. kahawai Bray & Cribb, 2003 and O. cf. olssoni], and Cephalolepidap

Outbreak of swimmer's itch in Central Italy: Description, causative agent and preventive measures.

Swimmer's itch is caused by the penetration of free-swimming larvae of trematodes of the family Schistosomatidae in human skin. It is usually reported in people engaged in recreational water activities in freshwater bodies and in most of cases, it is provoked by bird schistosomes of the genus Trichobilharzia. In the summer 2017, many cases of dermatitis were recorded in people bathing in the waters of the Albano Lake (Rome, Italy) and a parasitological investigation was carried out in order to ascertain the causative agent of these cases. Snails of the family Lymnaeidae, natural intermediate h
