Ameloblastic carcinoma (AC) is a rare primary odontogenic tumor that has histological features of both ameloblastoma and carcinoma. A total number of 92 case reports speak about its rare incidence, affecting mostly the mandible as a locally destructive lesion. The maxilla is affected even more rarely as only 35 cases have been reported until 2012 in scientific literature. The clinical course of AC is generally aggressive, with extensive local bone destruction. The most common clinical features include swelling, pain, trismus, significant bone resorption with tooth mobility, dysphonia and intra…

Disorders of craniofacial muscles (CFM) frequently arise from various conditions and injuries affecting the central and peripheral nervous systems, as well as from neurosurgical, reconstructive, and cosmetic interventions. The principal clinical manifestations include facial asymmetry, lagophthalmos, paralytic strabismus, synkinesis, contractures, trismus, bruxism, temporomandibular joint dysfunction, chronic facial pain, and sialorrhea. Such disorders not only restrict daily functioning but also lead to significant psychosocial maladjustment, a decline in quality of life, and increased disabi…

BACKGROUND: Infections of odontogenic origin are the most common cause of inflammatory disease of head and neck region. Computed tomography … submandibular space - 27 patients (71%). Dental examination was impossible in 29 patient because of trismus. During analysis of CT studies we evaluated maxillary and mandibular alveolar processes for presence of osteolytic bone lesions around causative teeth roots and we found them in 30 cases (79%). In 32 cases (84%) cervicofacial infection were of mandi …

This report aims to present a very rare case of progressive limited mouth opening (trismus) in an 8‑year‑old child caused by calcification of the sphenomandibular ligament. This case highlights the difficulty of diagnostic and therapeutic challenges associated with this disorder. We discuss the detailed clinical and radiological approach, including the imaging techniques used to identify the calcification, as well as the treatment option chosen, namely maxillofacial physiotherapy. This report provides new information to the existing literature on this rare entity and to provide useful informat…

BACKGROUND: Peritonsillar abscess, or quinsy, is one of the most common emergency presentations to ENT departments, and is the most common deep tissue infection of the head and neck. In the UK, junior members of the ENT team are regularly required to independently assess, diagnose and treat patients with peritonsillar aspiration or incision and drainage.
ISSUE: Inexperienced practitioners can stumble at several obstacles: poor access due to trismus; poor lighting; difficulty in learning the therapeutic procedure; and difficulty in accurately documenting findings and treatment.
SOLUTION: To c…

Dentists and dental surgeons very frequently prescribe antibiotics to their patients. In a small percentage of cases, that is appropriate; however, patients can often also heal without antibiotic therapy. Microbiological analysis is only carried out in a very limited number of cases, and is complex and time-consuming. A small assortment of oral antibiotics is usually sufficient. Antibiotics are indicated when dental infection is accompanied by fever or indications of infection of a more systemic nature, such as trismus or lymphadenopathy. A patient with cellulitis of the head and neck area, wi…

INTRODUCTION: A 10-year-old girl presented to the Emergency Department with temporomandibular joint pain, malocclusion, and trismus after a bicycle accident.
METHODS: CT of the temporal bones showed displacement of the right mandibular condyle into the middle cranial fossa with small intraparenchymal hemorrhage. The condyle was reduced using closed reduction technique and the patient was placed in maxillomandibular fixation.
RESULTS: Complete reduction of the displaced condyle with resultant normal occlusion and persistent bony defect in the temporal bone.
CONCLUSION: In early follow-up ass…

Peritonsillar abscess is a suppurative infection of the tissues adjacent to the palatine tonsil and is regarded in otolarygologic practice as a complication of pharyngotonsillitis. The most common presentation is gradually increasing pain, fever, trismus, drooling and a muffled voice. Asymmetric tonsils are common in clinical practice. Differential diagnosis includes infectious, granulomatous, congenital and neoplastic lesions. This is a case study of two patients evaluated for unilateral tonsillar enlargement who were found to have a previously unexpected peritonsillar abscess at tonsillectom…

A 78-year-old Japanese female was admitted to our hospital because of headache. Trismus, opisthotonus and convulsion appeared in the early morning on the second hospital day. She was diagnosed as tetanus based on these symptoms and the history of trauma on her left hand 6 days ago. A piece of bamboo was extracted from her left hand. However, Clostridium tetani was not identified. Thiamylal and mechanical ventilation were initiated combined with Pancronium, Diazepam and tetanus immune globulin. Gabexate Mesilate was also added for disseminated intravascular coagulation syndrome probably associa…

The authors describe the case of a bullet wound with comminuted fracture of the right temporomandibular joint, associated with a transverse comminuted fracture of the left ascending ramus and with an oblique fracture in the region of the left ascending angle of the mandible without dislocation. On being admitted at the author's clinic, the patient showed a grade II trismus and an open bite with a cutting edge distance of nearly 10 mm. Treatment consisted at first in passive and active expanding exercises under anaesthesia. In this way, it was possible to improve considerably the opening of the…

Noma is a rapidly progressing infection of the oral cavity, which can cause the disintegration of the cheek, nose and eye, in under a week. One of the most disabling sequelae is trismus, the restriction of mouth opening, which results in difficulties in speech, mastication, social feeding habits and maintenance of oral hygiene. Restriction of mouth opening among noma patients mostly begins during the transition between World Health Organisation (WHO) stage 3 (gangrene) and stage 4 (scarring) of the disease. This study aims to describe the impact of physiotherapy in noma patients hospitalised w…

BACKGROUND: The purpose of the study was to compare the efficacy of the use of 0.2% chlorhexidine irrigation and the oral antibiotics for the prevention of postoperative complication like pain, trismus, swelling and infection after the surgical extraction of IMTM.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A randomised, double blinded clinical trial was planned with two equal groups. Patients were randomly divided into two groups using computer-generated codes with an allocation ratio of 1:1. Group I (Control): Standard preoperative and postoperative systemic oral antibiotics and Group II (Study): No systemic ant…

We report herein on a rare case of tetanus originating from ulcerated breast cancer. A 60-year-old homeless woman was admitted to our hospital because of lockjaw. On admission, a physical examination revealed tachypnea, trismus, opisthotonus and an ulcerated right breast. There was no other skin soft tissue damage. A diagnosis of tetanus was entertained from the lockjaw and opisthotonus. Tetanus globulin, tetanus toxoid, penicillin and respiratory support were initiated. Later, a right total mastectomy was performed, and the diagnosis of breast cancer was made, however, gram positive bacilli w…
