Personality and hormone therapy use among postmenopausal women in the GAZEL cohort study.

OBJECTIVE: To examine with a prospective design the association of personality with hormone therapy (HT) use before and after the publication of the Women's Health Initiative (WHI) trial. DESIGN: Questionnaires were mailed to measure type A personality and hostility. Additional data from up to six mailed questionnaires every 3 years were used to determine the subsequent date of menopause and the use of HT. The association between personality and HT use was measured by the relative index of inequality computed through binary logistic regression. SETTING: The French GAZEL Cohort Study. PATIEN…

Stress-Related Personality Patterns in Patients With Dentofacial Deformities and Their Evolution After Orthognathic Surgery.

BACKGROUND: Orthognathic surgery significantly influences psychosocial well-being. Individuals with dentofacial deformities may experience psychological distress, characterized by negative affectivity (NA) and social inhibition (SI). When these 2 traits coexist, they define Type D personality. PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of Type D personality traits in patients with Class III dentofacial deformities and assess changes in these traits, which inherently reflect variations in Type D personality, following orthognathic surgery. STUDY DESIGN, SETTING, SAMPLE: Thi

The relationship between borderline personality and obesity.

Obesity is a significant health problem in the United States. Therefore, it is extremely important to understand potential clinical associations with obesity, including personality pathology. From studies of personality disorders in other types of eating pathology, it appears that restrictive personality disorders (e.g., obsessive-compulsive disorder) are associated with restrictive eating pathology (e.g., anorexia nervosa, restricting type) whereas impulsive personality disorders (e.g., borderline personality disorder) are associated with impulsive eating pathology (e.g., anorexia nervosa, bi

Serological, epidemiological, and molecular differences between human T-cell lymphotropic virus Type 1 (HTLV-1)-seropositive healthy carriers and persons with HTLV-I Gag indeterminate Western blot patterns from the Caribbean.

To investigate the significance of serological human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1 (HLTV-1) Gag indeterminate Western blot (WB) patterns in the Caribbean, a 6-year (1993 to 1998) cross-sectional study was conducted with 37,724 blood donors from Guadeloupe (French West Indies), whose sera were routinely screened by enzyme immunoassay (EIA) for the presence of HTLV-1 and -2 antibodies. By using stringent WB criteria, 77 donors (0.20%) were confirmed HTLV-1 seropositive, whereas 150 (0.40%; P < 0.001) were considered HTLV seroindeterminate. Among them, 41.3% (62) exhibited a typical HTLV-1 Gag

Personality pathology and its influence on eating disorders.

Personality disorders appear to be present in a significant minority of individuals with eating disorders. For example, in contrast to reported rates in the general population of eight percent, obsessive compulsive personality is present in approximately 22 percent of individuals with anorexia, restricting type. Likewise, in contrast to rates in the general population of six percent, borderline personality is present in approximately 25 percent of individuals with anorexia nervosa, binge-eating purging type, and in 28 percent of individuals with bulimia nervosa. Could these high rates of comor

Effect of a Personalized Mobile Health Intervention Using Artificial Intelligence (the WARIFA App) Versus a Nonpersonalized Intervention on User-Defined Objectives, Healthy Lifestyles, and Management of Type 1 Diabetes (T1D): Protocol for a Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Noncommunicable diseases are the leading cause of death worldwide. Cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, cancer, and type 2 diabetes share common risk factors that can be addressed: physical activity, a healthy diet, and avoiding smoking and alcohol. The Watching the Risk Factors (WARIFA) mobile health app was created for general health awareness and to support users in adopting healthier behaviors, as well as to support type 1 diabetes (T1D) self-management. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the WARIFA app with personalized artificial intelligence (AI

Human T cell leukemia virus Type I (HTLV-I) infection induces greater expansions of CD8 T lymphocytes in persons with HTLV-I-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis than in asymptomatic carriers.

A quantitative study of the T cell receptor repertoire was performed ex vivo on CD4 and CD8 T cell subsets of human T cell leukemia virus type I (HTLV-I)-infected asymptomatic carriers and patients with HTLV-I-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP). Indexes of oligoclonality that compiled all repertoire modifications were calculated for peripheral blood mononuclear cells and for CD4 and CD8 T cell subsets. Both patients with HAM/TSP and asymptomatic carriers had greater T lymphocyte expansions than did uninfected donors, which was independent of age and at least twice hig

Personality Disorders Revisited: A Newly Proposed Mental Illness.

Personality disorders such as dependent personality disorder (DPD), among others, have shown limited academic development in terms of a more in-depth understanding or subtypes that may exist as a mental illness or associated condition. DPD was first published as a distinct personality disorder in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders, 3rd edition (DSM III) psychiatry manual in 1980. Since its revision in the DSM IIIR in 1987, no significant advancements have been proposed to date. This case study reported a patient with suicidal ideation and offered a new type of DPD to ad

[Comparative clinico-psychological research on asthenic and sthenic remissions in attack-like schizophrenia].

Using a clinico-psychological approach, personality changes have been studied in 40 patients with attack-like schizophrenia presenting asthenic (n = 22) or sthenic (n = 18) types of remissions. The common regularities have been identified, namely personality alterations of a superficial level with the preservation of "the nucleus of personality". In an asthenic type of remission the defect is total and all the main components of the personality are involved. This variant of schizophrenic defect is distinguished by impairment of the motivational-stimulating component of mental activity without

[Research into premorbid personality in psychiatry in German-speaking countries: the last 3 decades].

The empirical research in premorbid personality of psychiatric patients has markedly advanced in German speaking countries since adequate research methods were introduced in the middle of the sixties. Among the various results are the following: Kretschmer's typological conception of human constitution were largely refuted and replaced by other conceptions on a methodologically more solid ground; Tellenbach's concept of the "melancholic type" as the premorbid structure of the majority of patients suffering from a unipolar affective disorder with melancholic features could be convincingly valid

Can scuba diving transform the lives of people with physical impairments? A mixed methods study.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to: (1) test and explain the type of experience scuba diving is among people with physical impairments based on the experience-type framework; (2) assess and describe their personality based on the Big Five domains; and (3) identify if personality, years diving, and diving level predict experience-type. METHODS: An explanatory sequential mixed methods design was employed. The quantitative phase used a cross-sectional survey (n = 103). The qualitative phase used follow-up interviews with 15 participants divided into 3 case study groups. Joint displays with meta-infere

Impact of Comorbid Personality Disorders on Depression Treatment in Routine Outpatient Care.

OBJECTIVE: The impact of personality disorder on treatment effectiveness for depression has been debated, and study results have been inconsistent. However, studies that report a negative impact of personality disorders on depression treatment outcomes are often characterized by uncontrolled treatment designs. Within such contexts, individuals with depression and personality disorders are at risk to receive suboptimal treatment. The aim of this retrospective observational study was to investigate whether and to what extent comorbid personality disorders were associated with the type and amount

Personality pathology and substance abuse in eating disorders: a longitudinal study.

OBJECTIVE: Substance abuse has been shown to predict poor outcome in eating disorder (ED) samples, and prior cross-sectional data on personality subtypes of EDs suggest that substance abuse is associated with dysregulated and possibly avoidant-insecure subtypes. This study investigates longitudinal associations between personality and substance use. METHOD: Personality pathology and substance use were assessed in 213 individuals with anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa at baseline; substance use was assessed at regular follow-up intervals over a 9-year period. RESULTS: Of the five personali

Trait Sensitivity, Anxiety, and Personality Are Predictive of Central Sensitization Symptoms in Patients with Chronic Low Back Pain.

BACKGROUND: Sensitivity-related trait characteristics involving physical and emotional sensitivities and high trait anxiety personality types have been observed in individuals with nonspecific chronic low back pain (NSCLBP). High trait sensitivity to sensory stimulation combined with interpretation biases based on personality type may contribute to the development of central sensitization (CS) symptoms. To date, there is limited research that has considered both sensitivity levels and personality type in NSCLBP with CS. The purpose of this study was to investigate (1) relationships between tra

A profile analysis of personality disorders: beyond multiple diagnoses.

The authors applied cluster analysis and multidimensional scaling to the analyses of 59 patients with personality pathology. Cluster analysis yielded eight typologies of patients: detached, anankastic, phobic, dramatic, erratic, emotional, milder emotional, and masochistic negativistic. Multidimensional scaling identified the dimensions of classifying patients: anxious rumination versus behavioural acting out, overall severity of personality pathology, and assertiveness versus withdrawal. Considering the distinction between personality disorder (dysfunctional personality) and abnormal personal

Personality features of obsessive-compulsive disorder.

The authors evaluated personality dysfunction in 23 patients with primary obsessive-compulsive disorder and an age- and sex-matched group of patients with major depressive disorder. There were no significant differences between the two patient groups with respect to mean personality trait scores or the frequency or type of personality disorder diagnosis. A mixed personality disorder with avoidant, dependent, and passive-aggressive features was most commonly observed in the obsessive-compulsive group. There was a very low frequency of schizoid or compulsive personality disorder.

Therapists and quasi-therapists in a therapy analogue situation.

Evaluated an assumption from previous psychotherapy analogue studies, namely, that trained psychotherapists and untrained quasi-therapists with personality similarities will respond similarly to patient presentations. Ss were 24 male psychotherapists and 24 male undergraduate students, chosen partially on the basis of their responses to an A-B personality scale derived from the work of Whitehorn and Betz (1954). The three-factor experimental design included S personality type (A or B), S professional status (psychotherapist vs. student), and videotaped patient simulations (neurotic vs. schizoi
