UNLABELLED: A characteristic rectocolonic endoscopic finding is the presence of ulcers, which may correspond to different diagnosis. Between January, 1989 and May, 1993, we performed 28 colonoscopies and 12 rectoscopies in patients with HIV (+). In all cases, histologic, parasitologic, bacteriologic, virologic, and micrologic studies were practised on tissue biopsies. The ultrasonographic study of gastroduodenal lesions has received little attention. We report the results of ultrasound examination in 39 patients with gastric ulcer and 14 patients with duodenal ulcers, all endoscopically confirmed. We describe six varieties of ultrasonographic images that change with front or side views of the crater, according to the contents of the crater (liquid, sediment of air-mucus) and according to its localization (proximal or distal to the transducer). The importance of gastroduodenal segment exploration during ultrasound examination is emphasized.

INTRODUCTION: We observed two cases of Pasteurella and discuss the role of bacterial sampling in ulcerations of the lower limb.
CASE REPORTS: In the first case, Pasteurella was discovered in an ulceration of the lower limb and was cured with no particularly specific care. In the second case, Pasteurella had been inoculated by scratching an ulceration and could not be cured without specific treatment.

A total of 55 gastric ulcer patients and 1045 healthy persons were investigated for 36 HLA antigens (A, B, C loci). The study revealed that HLA B12, B15, B35, Cw4 were more common in the patients (34.55, 18.18, 27.27 and 25.45%, respectively). HLA A3 (10.9% in the patients and 25.74% in those healthy) is found to be protective against gastric ulcer. The data obtained are considered with regard to heterogeneity of the disease.

The article analyses experience in treatment of 297 patients with gastroduodenal bleeding of ulcerous etiology. Operative interventions after arrest of bleeding and the appropriate preoperative management produce better results (the mortality rate, 3.3%) than those of emergency operations (the mortality rate, 15.7%). A 65-year-old man with stage I testicular seminoma, treated with surgery and radiation, had fever of unknown origin, adrenal insufficiency, and an isolated perianal ulcer. Tissue diagnosis of disseminated histoplasmosis was established by biopsy of the perianal ulcer, an unusual cutaneous manifestation of the disease. Treatment with amphotericin B resulted in rapid clinical improvement and complete healing of the perianal ulcer.

Most patients with chronic duodenal ulcer (DU) craters have gastritis associated with Helicobacter pylori (HP), now thought to be the major cause of DU. A smaller proportion of DU patients have no detectable HP. In this study, we examined the frequency and causes of HP-negative duodenal ulcers.
