A 'parachute effect' mockingly sealing a spontaneous coronary artery dissection: what we have learnt from intravascular imaging.

Spontaneous coronary artery dissection is often underdiagnosed. It accounts for a certain amount of acute coronary syndromes. Intravascular imaging, either intravascular ultrasound or optical coherence tomography, represents a relevant ally for interventional cardiologist. Here we report an intriguing case of spontaneous coronary artery dissection not immediately diagnosed due to the explained parachute effect, managed invasively according to an algorithm previously published, with a good long-term outcome.

Role of interventional radiology in pregnancy complicated by placenta accreta spectrum disorder: systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the potential benefit of interventional radiology (IR) in improving the outcome of women undergoing surgery for a placenta accreta spectrum (PAS) disorder. METHODS: MEDLINE, EMBASE and CINAHL databases were searched for studies comparing outcomes of women with a prenatal diagnosis of PAS who underwent an IR procedure before surgery vs those who did not, using a robust collection of terms relating to PAS. The primary outcome was intraoperative estimated blood loss (EBL). Secondary outcomes were the number of transfused units of packed red blood cells (PRBC), fresh frozen

Endoscopic Ultrasound-Guided Gallbladder Drainage.

Recent literature has demonstrated effectiveness and safety of endoscopic ultrasound-guided gallbladder drainage, both as a primary intervention in patients with cholecystitis who are unfit for urgent surgical intervention and as a secondary intervention to internalize biliary drainage after initial placement of a percutaneous cholecystostomy catheter.

Neuromodulation with transcranial focused ultrasound.

The understanding of brain function and the capacity to treat neurological and psychiatric disorders rest on the ability to intervene in neuronal activity in specific brain circuits. Current methods of neuromodulation incur a tradeoff between spatial focus and the level of invasiveness. Transcranial focused ultrasound (FUS) is emerging as a neuromodulation approach that combines noninvasiveness with focus that can be relatively sharp even in regions deep in the brain. This may enable studies of the causal role of specific brain regions in specific behaviors and behavioral disorders. In additio

Transgastric: A forgotten view for atrial septal defect device closure procedures?

Percutaneous closure of an atrial septal defect in the cardiac catheterization laboratory requires noninvasive imaging to assist in characterization of the atrial septal defect and deployment of the device. Transesophageal echocardiography is the modality most often used in these circumstances. Transesophageal echocardiographic guidelines exist for the assessment and guidance for atrial septal defect closures, but these guidelines do not mention transgastric views. In this case, we demonstrate that transgastric views are helpful in describing the atrial septal defect, especially as it concerns

Update on Ultrasound-Guided Interventional Procedures on Peripheral Nerves.

This article is a practical review update on ultrasound (US)-guided interventional procedures on peripheral nerves. Technical considerations, biopsy techniques, and some examples of injections are described. US is considered a safe imaging guidance for interventional procedures, due to its high spatial resolution and the possibility to image the needle and inject drugs in real time. US-guided injections could be considered a diagnostic and therapeutic option in the most common neuropathy, before or as an alternative to surgery. US-guided injection techniques in patients with carpal tunnel synd

Ureteric injury during transvaginal ultrasound guided oocyte retrieval.

BACKGROUND: Transvaginal ultrasound guided oocyte retrieval during in vitro fertilization is performed routinely around the world and has reduced the occurrence of intra-abdominal injury considerably over laparoscopic procedures. Despite this, injuries do occur. CASE: We report a case of a 37-year-old patient who underwent IVF and encountered a ureteric injury during oocyte retrieval, which was recognized early and treated with ureteral stents with full resolution. During a subsequent IVF cycle, stenting of the ureters allowed better visualization, resulting in an uneventful retrieval and sub
