Shale gas activities can release trace elements and naturally occurring radionuclides into aquatic environments, yet the long-term impact of low-intensity contamination events remains poorly constrained. This study investigates a localized geochemical anomaly observed in river sediments collected in 2021 near a documented shale-gas-related spill and waste disposal area in the Kennebecasis River watershed. Sediment cores and associated porewaters were collected to assess the distribution, potential sources, and mobility of uranium (U), barium (Ba), and radium-226 (226Ra). Results reveal localiz…

Children in humanitarian settings may be exposed to toxic substances (eg, lead, mercury, fluoride, pesticides, tobacco, and carbon monoxide) through inadequate housing, polluted indoor air and water, or being located near industrial sites. They may become ill after ingesting contaminated food (such as cassava containing cyanide) or being sprayed with chemicals dispersed from airplanes. Children who are refugees from war also may be exposed to environmental contaminants such as depleted uranium. As the climate changes, more children will live with extreme heat. Pediatric clinicians should be aw…

A novel method is proposed for the solvent extraction of niobium(V). A 0.1M solution of Aliquat 336S in xylene quantitatively extracts microgram quantities of niobium(V) from 0.01M ascorbic acid at pH 3.5-6.5. Niobium from the organic phase is stripped with 0.5M nitric acid and determined spectrophotometrically in the aqueous phase as its complex with TAR. The method permits separation of niobium not only from tantalum(V) but also from vanadium(IV), titanium(IV), zirconium(IV), thorium(IV), chromium(III), molybdenum(VI), uranium(VI), iron(III), etc. Niobium from stainless steel was determined …

Although natural radionuclides are always present in foods, information about the levels is scarce. The diet-related exposure to radiation is, however, dependent on the radionuclide content of respective food items. In this study, the levels of the naturally occurring radionuclides lead-210 (Pb-210), uranium-234 (U-234), uranium-238 (U-238), radium-226 (Ra-226) and radium-228 (Ra-228) were investigated in over 200 foods as part of the first German total diet study. Radioanalytical techniques and measurements were applied for determination. The natural radionuclide activity concentrations obtai…

There is no place on the Earth, the planet we live on, where the natural background radiation level is zero. Since the birth and even in our fetal stage, we have been exposed to different sources of natural radiation. Life, in fact, evolved in a radiation environment that was much more harsh than today. Earth serves as a source of terrestrial radiation. Uranium, thorium, and radium are among the radioactive materials that naturally exist in soil and rock. Moreover, the air, we breathe, contains radon, a colorless, odorless, radioactive gas that is created naturally by the radioactive decay of …

Contamination of the vadose zone with various pollutants is a world-wide problem, and often technical or economic constraints impose remediation without excavation. In situ bioremediation in the vadose zone by bioventing has become a standard remediation technology for light spilled petroleum products. In this review, focus is given on new in situ bioremediation strategies in the vadose zone targeting a variety of other pollutants such as perchlorate, nitrate, uranium, chromium, halogenated solvents, explosives and pesticides. The techniques for biostimulation of either oxidative or reductive …

Basophilic leukemia is a rare disease accounting for less than 2% of all hematopoietic malignancies and little is known about the best therapeutical approach. We report a case of basophilic leukemia occurring as an accelerated phase of chronic myelogenic leukemia in a 50 year old man with a past history of uranium and thorium exposure. He was successfully treated with intensive chemotherapy and total body irradiation followed by autologous peripheral stem cell transplantation. Such an approach has never been reported in this disease. However, the benefit on survival could not be evaluated beca…

Uranium mining and milling operations in northern Saskatchewan (Canada) release effluents with elevated levels of certain trace metals and metalloids, including selenium. The goal of the present study was to evaluate the presence of selenium-induced deformities in northern pike (Esox lucius) and white sucker (Catostomus commersoni) larvae originating from adults collected downstream of a uranium mine. Eggs were fertilized in the field and incubated in the laboratory following a two-way (crossover) analysis-of-variance experimental design to discriminate effects from maternal transfer versus th…

A criticality accident occurred at the uranium conversion plant in Tokaimura, Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan on 30 September 1999. When uranyl nitrate was overloaded to a critical mass level, uncontrolled fission reaction occurred. A procedure was carried out according to the JCO manual, although not an officially approved manual. Three workers were heavily exposed to neutrons andγ-rays produced by nuclear fission, and they subsequently developed acute radiation syndrome (ARS). The average doses to the whole body of the three workers were approximately 25, 9, and 3 GyEq (biologically equivalent dos…

A slice from a Porites Lutea coral core collected inside the Enewetak Atoll lagoon, within 15 km of all major nuclear tests conducted at the atoll, was analysed for 236U, 239Pu and 240Pu over the time interval 1952-1964 using a higher time resolution than previously reported for a parallel slice from the same core. In addition two sediment samples from the Koa and Oak craters were analysed. The strong peaks in the concentrations of 236U and 239Pu in the testing years are confirmed to be considerably wider than the flushing time of the lagoon. This is likely due to the growth mechanism of the c

In this study, the adsorption behavior of U(VI) on (oxy)hydroxides synthesized at different temperatures (25 and 75 °C) was investigated. Four (oxy)hydroxides were synthesized by drying slurries of Fe(III) and Fe(III)Cr(III) (oxy)hydroxide in a vacuum desiccator (25 °C) or in an oven (75 °C). Batch adsorption tests were conducted using the (oxy)hydroxides thus synthesized and groundwater containing uranium ions. In general, the U(VI) removal fraction significantly increased with increasing pH from 3 to 5, remained constant with increasing pH from 5 to 9, and decreased at pH greater than 9, reg…

Schwertmannite and jarosite are naturally occurring iron (Fe) oxyhydroxysulfates with strong sorption capacities for hexavalent uranium [U(VI)] in various acidic sulfate-rich environments. These metastable minerals commonly undergo recrystallization, particularly in the presence of dissolved Fe2+ [Fe(II)aq], which may influence the fate of associated U(VI). Here, we quantified molecular-level changes in U repartitioning and speciation when U(VI)-sorbed schwertmannite and jarosite reacted with Fe(II)aq under near-neutral and anaerobic conditions over 2 weeks. The results show that Fe(II)aq addi…

Uranium dioxide (UO2) particles can be released from mines, nuclear fuel manufacturing, reactor accidents, and weapons use. They pose inhalation risks, yet their behavior in the human lung remains poorly understood. This study investigates the long-term chemical alteration and dissolution of µm-sized UO2 particles in two model lung fluids: Simulated Lung Fluid (SLF) and Artificial Lysosomal Fluid (ALF), representing extracellular and intracellular lung environments, respectively. Particles were exposed to each fluid at 37°C for up to 180 days (SLF) and 900 days (ALF). In SLF, UO2 showed low ap…

The Escherichia coli OXA-1 oxacillinase, a beta-lactamase which provides resistance to beta-lactam antibiotics (penicillins and cephalosporins), has been crystallized. A member of the class D family of serine beta-lactamases, OXA-1 is especially active against the penicillins oxacillin and cloxacillin and is now found in 10% of E. coli clinical isolates. Crystals grown from PEG 8000 at pH 7.5 diffract to 1.5 A resolution at 100 K and have space group P1 (Z = 2), with unit-cell parameters a = 36.0, b = 51.6, c = 72.9 A, alpha = 70.2, beta = 84.1, gamma = 81.5 degrees.
