[Tuberculosis of the urinary bladder: a literature review. Part 2].

Issues of etiology, pathogenesis, and diagnostics of tuberculous bladder lesions were discussed in the first part of the review. The presence of a "small contracted" bladder, regardless of etiology, is an indication for surgical treatment, including tuberculous microcystis. The surgeons main task is to select the optimal surgical approach in each case. An ileal segment is considered the best material for urinary reservoir reconstruction. Supratrigonal cystectomy with augmentation and radical cystectomy with orthotopic reconstruction are the most common procedures for tuberculous microcystis. I

Glandular Lesions of the Urinary Bladder: Diagnostic and Molecular Updates.

Glandular lesions in the urinary tract or their associated pathologies can pose a diagnostic challenge. There is a variety of benign alterations and tumor types that need to be taken into account in differential diagnostic considerations. In recent times, efforts for better defining these alterations or lesions both on the histopathological and molecular levels have been undertaken. This article will provide an update on current diagnostic and molecular considerations of these lesions.

Urinary exosomal mRNA as a biomarker for the diagnosis of bladder cancer.

OBJECTIVE: To study the diagnostic value of mRNA expression in urinary exocrine body in bladder cancer. METHODS: From February 2022 to December 2022, 60 patients diagnosed with bladder cancer by pathology in the Department of Urology, Affiliated Hospital of Chengde Medical University were selected as the case group. In total, 40 healthy subjects receiving physical examinations were selected as the control group. 100 mL of morning urine samples were collected from the subjects in both groups based on the same standard. Three subjects were randomly selected from each group. Urinary exosomes wer

[Rare case of leiomyosarcoma of the urinary bladder in a young man].

Leiomyosarcomas are rare, highly aggressive tumors of the urinary bladder. With approximately 200 cases reported in the literature, there is limited data on the prognosis and treatment of these neoplasms. Curative treatment approaches are primarily characterized by radical surgery, especially radical cystectomy. However, this procedure is associated with significant impairments in the quality of life for patients. This circumstance forms the basis for considering a curative treatment approach with partial cystectomy for a 19-year-old man with leiomyosarcoma of the urinary bladder.

Mast cell distribution and prevalence in the murine urinary bladder.

BACKGROUND: Mast cells have been implicated in the pathology of various urinary bladder disorders. However, the distribution of mast cells throughout urinary bladder tissue remains uncertain despite mast cell prevalence being relatively well-defined. Using a mouse tissue model, this study aims to characterise the prevalence and distribution of mast cells throughout the urinary bladder. METHODS: Bladder tissues were collected from six C57BL/6J female mice. Mast cell prevalence was quantified by flow cytometry, based on the expression of the following characteristic markers: CD45, CD117 and Fcɛ…

The effect of myeloablative radiation on urinary bladder mast cells.

Radiation-induced cystitis is an inflammatory condition affecting the urinary bladder, which can develop as a side effect of abdominopelvic radiotherapy, specifically external-beam radiation therapy or myeloablative radiotherapy. A possible involvement of mast cells in the pathophysiology of radiation-induced cystitis has been indicated in cases of external-beam radiation therapy; however, there is no evidence that these findings apply to the myeloablative aetiology. As such, this study investigated potential changes to urinary bladder mast cell prevalence when exposed to myeloablative radiati…

Foreign Body in the Male Urinary Bladder: A Case Report.

A foreign body in the urinary bladder is an uncommon finding in urology emergencies. There are several ways in which intravesical foreign bodies can occur, including iatrogenic injuries, self-insertion for pleasure, sexual abuse, assault, and migration from adjacent sites. This case report is about an interesting presentation of a 36-year-old male who presented to the urology outpatient department with a burning sensation and dribbling while urinating for 1 month. An X-ray of the pelvis revealed multiple radiodensities (morphology was suggested as magnetic balls) in the pelvic soft tissues. Cy…

MRI Investigation of Kidneys, Ureters and Urinary Bladder in Rabbits.

Twelve clinically healthy and sexually mature New Zealand White rabbits were studied. The non-contrast imaging included T1-weighted and T2-weighted spin-echo and gradient-echo sequences in the transverse, sagittal and dorsal planes. Transverse MRI (T2-weighted image) through L1 demonstrated only the right kidney. The transverse T2-weighted image through L2 showed both kidneys. The cranial part of the urinary bladder on T1-weighted transverse scans through L4 was flexed to the left. The T2-weighted sagittal image 30 mm to the right of the median plane showed the right kidney, the right ureter a…

[Paraganglioma of the urinary bladder-a rare, but relevant differential diagnosis].

A paranglioma is a rare, extra-adrenal neuroendocrine tumour. Paraganglioma of the urinary bladder is very rare, accounting for < 1% of all paranglioma and only 0.05% of all bladder tumours. Presentation varies greatly and its clinical significance is dependent on the tumour functionality. Since paranglioma may look histologically very similar to urothelial carcinomas, the risk of misdiagnosis is relatively high, with considerable therapeutic and medicolegal consequences. This case describes an incidental paraganglioma of the urinary bladder, diagnosed cystoscopically due to painless microhaem…

Clinical and pathological characteristics of metastatic tumors to the urinary bladder.

Metastatic carcinoma to the urinary bladder is a rare and under-recognized condition in surgical pathology. In this study, we identified 8 cases of true bladder metastasis at our institution in the past 20 years, excluding secondary tumors via direct extension or serosal implantation. The most common tumor type is malignant melanoma (3/8), followed by clear cell renal cell carcinoma (2/8), adenocarcinoma of the gastrointestinal tract (2/8), and breast invasive lobular carcinoma (1/8). There are 6 cases of endoscopically exophytic metastasis and 2 cases of diffuse metastasis, commensurate with …

Spontaneous Rupture of the Urinary Bladder in an Elderly Diabetic Male.

Spontaneous rupture of the urinary bladder (SRUB) represents an infrequent but critical urological crisis with significant morbidity and mortality risk especially in cases of septicemia. While various factors contribute to its etiology, SRUB often manifests secondary to pre-existing bladder pathologies such as chronic inflammation, neoplasia, iatrogenic radiation exposure, or obstructive uropathy. An 82-year-old male presented with acute, left-lateralized abdominal discomfort. Clinical evaluation revealed diffuse erythema and swelling within the left lower abdominal quadrant, indicative of cel…

A case series of urinary bladder rhabdomyosarcoma in seven dogs.

BACKGROUND: Juvenile urinary bladder rhabdomyosarcoma (ubRMS) is a known entity; however, literature regarding its clinical behavior and endoscopic features is scarce. The aim of this study was to describe clinical and endoscopic features, and outcomes of ubRMS in dogs. CASE DESCRIPTION: Dogs undergoing transurethral endoscopy and with a histological diagnosis of ubRMS were retrospectively collected. Seven dogs with a median age of 18 months (range 6-32 months) were included in this retrospective, multicenter, and descriptive study. Median tumor size was 58 mm (range 30-65 mm), and tumor loca…

Obstruction of the ureter by neurofibroma of the urinary bladder treated endoscopically.

We present a case of a 23-year-old male with NF-1 diagnosed with bladder neurofibroma at childhood with regular ultrasound (US) follow-up since then, who presented with an obstructed left kidney. A detailed evaluation including blood tests and advanced imaging revealed left hydroureteronephrosis associated with a large bladder mass. The patient underwent cystoscopy and resection of the left ureteral orifice that was covered by the mass, and an indwelling ureteral stent was left in place. A follow-up US was performed one month after stent removal showing resolution of the hydronephrosis.

Imaging of hydatid cyst of kidney, ureter and urinary bladder.

Renal hydatid is an uncommon finding, reported in less than 5% patients with hydatid infection. Hydatid involvement of ureter and urinary bladder is an even rarer entity. Renal hydatid is typically unilateral, solitary and arises from cortex. It is essential to be aware of the imaging features of the hydatid cyst for proper diagnosis. Knowledge of the imaging features of various stages is essential since treatment decision is based on cyst stage. Hydatid cyst can mimic several entities both benign and malignant. We present a pictorial review to illustrate the radiological imaging features of h…

Villous Morphology in Urinary Bladder Biopsy: An Approach to Diagnosis.

Villous morphology in urinary bladder biopsy is a relatively uncommon finding. Villi are slender, finger-like structures that are commonly seen in the small intestine or in neoplastic lesions of gastrointestinal lineage/differentiation. Importantly, placenta also exhibits villi that are morphologically and functionally different from the intestinal one. Majority of the neoplastic lesions of urinary bladder are urothelial in origin with a minor subset showing glandular differentiation. While the presence of benign villi in urinary bladder biopsy necessitates a search for an occult perforation, …

The Urinary Microbiome: Implications in Bladder Cancer Pathogenesis and Therapeutics.

Recent investigation has proven that the bladder is not sterile. However, the implications of this finding in the pathophysiology and management of urothelial cell carcinoma have not been fully described. In this review, we summarize the literature relating to the urinary and gastrointestinal microbiomes in the context of urothelial cell carcinoma. The bladder microbiome may relate to urothelial cell carcinoma pathogenesis/progression, act as a noninvasive and modifiable urinary biomarker and have implications in treatment using immunotherapy agents such as intravesical bacillus Calmette-Gueri
