Compulsory and recommended vaccination in Italy: evaluation of coverage and non-compliance between 1998-2002 in Northern Italy.

BACKGROUND: Since vaccinations are an effective prevention tool for maintaining the health of society, the monitoring of immunization coverage allows us to identify areas where disease outbreaks are likely to occur, and possibly assist us in predicting future outbreaks. The aim of this study is the investigation of the coverage achieved for compulsory (diphtheria, tetanus, polio, hepatitis B,) and recommended (pertussis, Haemophilus influenzae, measles-mumps-rubella) vaccinations between 1998 and 2002 in the municipality of Bologna and the identification of the subjects not complying with comp

Are medical residents a "core group" for future improvement of influenza vaccination coverage in health-care workers? A study among medical residents at the University Hospital of Palermo (Sicily).

Despite international recommendations, vaccination coverage among European healthcare workers, including physicians, is widely recognized as unsatisfactory. In order to plan tailored vaccination campaigns and increase future coverage, we investigated reasons for refusing vaccination and determinants associated with influenza vaccine uptake among young health care workers. A survey was carried out during September and October 2010 on medical residents attending post-graduate Schools of the Medical Faculty at the University of Palermo (Italy). Each participant completed an anonymous web-based qu

Evaluation of knowledge, attitudes and vaccine hesitancy towards MMR vaccine among parents in the United Arab Emirates.

BACKGROUND: The Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR) vaccine is highly effective, but vaccine hesitancy (VH) is a key barrier to achieving herd immunity. This study aims to assess the general attitudes and knowledge of UAE parents regarding measles and the MMR vaccine while identifying determinants of VH. METHODOLOGY: A cross-sectional study was done from 15th April 2024 and 5th June 2024. This study recruited 462 parents residing in the UAE using convenience sampling. Recruitment occurred through various social media platforms including WhatsApp, X, and Instagram, as well as in public by approa

[Surveillance of measles in Germany].

In Germany, as in the entire WHO Region Europe, the goal has been set to eliminate measles by the year 2007. In order to achieve this, high vaccination rates of >/= 95 % are necessary as well as an intensive surveillance consisting of a continuous record of the age and region-specific incidence, vaccination rates and the seroprevalence. Data on the vaccination status, recorded in the districts at the time of school entry, are collected centrally and evaluated at the RKI since 1998. The vaccination rate for the 1(st) dose against measles is on the average 84.6 % and for the 2(nd) dose 14.3 %. A

Treatment of Pasteurella multocida infection with dressings containing honey and antibacterials: a case report.

Infections secondary to Pasteurella multocida frequently occur in patients who have been exposed to domestic pets. Human infections caused by Pasteurella multocida vary in severity, and clinical features include localised cellulitis, osteomyelitis, systemic bacteraemia, meningitis and pneumonia. No vaccine has been developed against Pasteurella multocida; it is treated with antibacterial agents and, in most cases, surgical intervention. This article discusses the authors' experience in treating a woman with severe cellulitis and osteomyelitis on her hand caused by Pasteurella multocida. She re

Does COVID-19 vaccination affect risk perception and adherence to preventive behaviors? A systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Since the COVID-19 pandemic onset, preventive measures (e.g., social distancing, hand hygiene, mask usage) and vaccines have been pivotal in mitigating transmission and reducing public health burdens. Although adherence to these measures, influenced by factors such as ventilation and exposure duration, has been extensively validated, their long-term sustainability faces socio-economic challenges. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the association between risk perception and adherence to preventive behaviors and conduct a meta-analysis comparing these behaviors in vaccinated versus unvac

The Vaccine That Was Never Mentioned: A Comparative Medico-Legal Analysis of the Duty to Inform and Document Preventive Immunization, with Proposed Practice Guidelines.

Background/Objectives: Vaccine-preventable disease may generate medico-legal disputes not only after an adverse event following immunization, but also when a clinician is alleged to have failed to mention, recommend, revisit, refer for, or document a clinically relevant vaccine. We examine this "unmentioned vaccine" problem while distinguishing existing law (lex lata) from proposed good practice (lex ferenda). Methods: We conducted a documented purposive narrative and comparative medico-legal review. PubMed/MEDLINE, PubMed Central, structured scholarly web searches, publicly accessible legal r

Do laws bring children in child care centers up to date for immunizations?

BACKGROUND: Pennsylvania state law requires licensed child care centers (CCCs) to document that each enrolled child is up to date (UTD) for routine immunizations within 60 days of enrollment. This study evaluates the law's impact on immunization coverage among children aged <or=59 months who attend CCCs in Philadelphia. METHODS: Out of Philadelphia's 440 commercial CCCs, 75 were randomly selected. Of these, 9 had closed, 3 did not accept children aged <or=59 months, and 3 refused assessment. For the remaining 60 CCCs, vaccination dates were abstracted from CCC records for all enrolled childre

Hepatitis B and the theatre nurse.

On 1st July 1995, an important change was made in DOH policy which affects all staff employed in the operating theatre. It was from this date that staff were required to declare their hepatitis B status. As workers who undertake exposure prone procedures (EPP workers), theatre staff are required to be immunised against this disease and to have their vaccination dates and immunity recorded by their employer's Occupational Health Department. Job applicants will not be offered a post unless they can provide proof of immunisation. This important change has been in force for medical EPP workers sin

Influenza vaccination during the coronavirus pandemic: intention to vaccinate among the at-risk population in the Central Catalonia Health Region (VAGCOVID).

BACKGROUND: Influenza is a major public health issue, with the primary preventive measure being an annual influenza vaccination. Nevertheless, vaccination coverage among the at-risk population is low. Our understanding of the behaviour of the influenza virus during the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus pandemic is limited, meaning influenza vaccination is still recommended for individuals at risk for severe complications due to influenza infection. The aim of the study is to determine the intention to vaccinate against seasonal influenza among the at-risk population in the 2020-21 campaign during the SAR

[Spontaneous regression of hepatocellular carcinoma after severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 vaccination:a case report].

An 86-year-old male patient with sustained virological response of chronic hepatitis type C was diagnosed with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in hepatic segment 3. He was treated with transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) and radiation therapy because the tumor was located at the edge of the liver and umbilical portion of the portal vein. The value of alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) which is a serological tumor marker decreased, and the tumor size did not increase;however, another tumor was recognized at S3 of the liver 15 months post-TACE. The patient underwent a second TACE, and computed t

Tailoring educational interventions targeting parental vaccine hesitancy: a systematic review of quantitative studies.

INTRODUCTION: Childhood vaccines, such as those to prevent tetanus (DTaP/Tdap), human papillomavirus (HPV) or hepatitis B (Hep B), have proven to be an effective strategy in preventing long-term diseases arising from injuries, such as puncture wounds, cuts or burns (e.g., DTaP/Tdap vaccine) or risky sexual behavior in adolescence (e.g., HPV or Hep B vaccines). However, despite national child immunization policies, parental vaccine hesitancy, defined as a delay in accepting or a refusal of available vaccinations, still represents a major social issue, resulting in reduced adherence to numerous
