From the year 1997, we examined 61 patients with left-sided varicocele aged 9-28 years. Nine (14.7%) of them had a recurrence of the disease after intervention (Ivanissevich operation). The renal venous hemodynamics was evaluated in order to choose the right method of surgery. All patients underwent surgery, the results were positive. The operation of testicular vein was conducted together with excision of varicous scrotal veins.

Scrotal scintigraphy using a gamma-camera and 740 MBq of 99mTc-labeled human serum albumin was performed on 43 patients with suspected varicocele. Of 31 boys 10 to 16 years old referred for treatment of a left grade II or III varicocele 28 underwent percutaneous sclerotherapy. Due to anatomical and technical obstacles sclerotherapy was not possible in 3 boys. At follow-up 1 of 16 boys (6.2 per cent) had a mild recurrence detected by Doppler sonography of the spermatic cord. Percutaneous sclerotherapy had no serious side effects, and proved to be an efficient and convenient treatment of left varicocele in childhood.
