Behçet's disease is a systemic vasculitis of unknown aetiology characteristically affecting venules. Onset is typically in young adults with recurrent oral and genital ulceration, uveitis, skin manifestations, arthritis, neurological involvement, and a tendency to thrombosis. It has a worldwide distribution but is prevalent in Japan, the Middle East, and some Mediterranean countries. International diagnostic criteria have been proposed, however diagnosis can be problematical, particularly if the typical ulcers are not obvious at presentation. Treatment is challenging, must be tailored to the p…

Eosinophils are produced in the bone marrow and circulate in the peripheral blood in a quiescent state. After margination and emigration into tissues through postcapillary venules, eosinophils primarily reside in mucosal sites including the gastrointestinal and respiratory tracts. Eosinophilic gastroenteritis and the idiopathic chronic eosinophilic pneumonia, first described by Carrington, are the most characterized idiopathic diseases defined by an eosinophil infiltration restricted respectively to the gastrointestinal and the respiratory tracts. Differential diagnosis can be difficult since …

A 72-year-old woman in good general health presented a massive intestinal and colonic ischemia with rapid post-operative death, due to mesenteric inflammatory veno-occlusive disease. Mesenteric inflammatory veno-occlusive disease, first described in 1994, is a vasculitis of unknown etiology limited to the mesenteric area, affecting exclusively veins and venules and sparing arteries. Histologically, there are acute lesions of lymphocytic and/or necrotizing, sometimes granulomatous phlebitis and chronic lesions of myointimal hyperplasia reducing the lumen of the veins. In this case, polymorphonu…

A patient who abused multiple drugs developed a rapidly progressive mononeuropathy multiplex, which appeared to respond to corticosteroid therapy with partial resolution. Intravenous methamphetamine had been used almost exclusively from the fourth month prior to the onset of symptoms. Biopsy material revealed a necrotizing angiitis involving medium and small sized arteries, capillaries, and venules, typical of a hypersensitivity-type angiopathy, rather than the previously reported polyarteritis nodosa-type lesions secondary to illicit drugs. The apparent response to corticosteroids suggests th…

CLINICAL CASE: Congenital retinal macrovessels, where an aberrant retinal vessel, usually a venule, is present in the posterior pole and may cross the avascular foveal region, are seen rarely.
DISCUSSION: Most of these cases are unilateral and stable with excellent visual prognosis and are detected on routine examination. Foveal cysts, hemorrhages and displaced foveola may also be seen. These entities must be distinguished from racemose angiomas, capillary hemangiomas of the retina and even when associated with neurological symptoms, should be considered as part of the Wyburn-Masson syndrome.

Pulmonary veno-occlusive disease (PVOD) is a rare cause of pulmonary hypertension characterised by extensive fibrotic occlusion of pulmonary veins. PVOD has a similar insidious presentation to idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension but responds poorly to conventional therapies and has a worse prognosis. The current study reports the case of a Caucasian female with a long history of progressive dyspnoea ultimately diagnosed as focal granulomatous venulitis leading to a pulmonary veno-occlusive disease-like pathology. The present study highlights the challenges in diagnosing and treating thi

AIM: To report the occurrence of proliferative vascular retinopathy in two patients with polymyositis/dermatomyositis.
METHOD: Review of case records.
RESULTS: One patient presented, six years after the diagnosis of polymyositis, with obliteration of the superior retinal vessels and associated neovascularization of the disc. The second patient with overlap syndrome was detected to have occlusion of the inferotemporal retinal arteriole and venule with early neovascularization of the retina.
CONCLUSION: Retinal vascular occlusion with development of proliferative changes can occur in polymyos

Mesenteric inflammatory veno-occlusive disease (MIVOD) is a rare but increasingly recognized cause of intestinal ischemia. It can be defined as phlebitis or venulitis affecting either the bowel or mesentery, without any evidence of coexisting arterial inflammatory involvement or an obvious predisposing cause. We report the clinicopathological characteristics of five patients who, after presenting with an acute abdomen, underwent exploratory laparotomy and resection of ischemic bowel. The distinctive histopathological characteristics of MIVOD were identified in all five patients. We review the

Study of the dynamics of circulation in the microvessels of the eye conjunctiva under the effect of nitroglycerin in 50 patients with chronic ischemic heart disease showed short-lived dilatation of the postcapillaries and venules in most of them. Simultaneous fall in venous pressure may be evidence of a diminution of the venous tonus with a tendency to the storage of blood in the microcirculation system. The encountered shifts in the systemic hemodynamics may possibly be due to the reaction of the microcirculation channel, the labile character of which in the various "micro-areas" of the conju…

Histological morphometric examination of the lungs of 22 patients with acquired mitral stenosis and 15 control persons is reported. The quotient obtained from wall thickness and lumen diameter of the pulmonary venules gives a reliable estimation of the haemodynamic changes found in the pulmonary vascular system in mitral stenosis patients. The typical changes in the pulmonary vascular system in these patients were observed particularly in the lower pulmonary lobe and to a lesser extent in the lingular of the upper lobe. Biopsy of the lower lobe is preferable in mitral stenosis operations becau…

INTRODUCTION: The effect of hypertonic saline (HTS) on microvascular permeability in microvessels with activated endothelial cells is unclear. We hypothesized that HTS and HTS with dextran would decrease hydraulic permeability after activation of the endothelium.
METHODS: Hydraulic permeability (L(p)) was measured in rat mesenteric venules using the modified Landis micro-occlusion technique. The effects of 185 mM HTS and HTS plus 2% dextran (HSD) were tested in the activated endothelium by measuring L(p) at baseline, after perfusion with ATP, and again after HTS (n = 6) or HSD (n = 6). ATP (1…

Fibrous stenosis of hepatic venules and other features of venous outflow obstruction, including zone 3 congestion and hemorrhage, are sometimes seen after orthotopic liver transplantation. similar changes associated with endothelial damage have recently been ascribed to azathioprine toxicity and may be forerunners of chronic rejection. Other potential causative agents such as viral hepatitis have yet to be considered. We reviewed 49 liver biopsy specimens from 21 consecutive patients after orthotopic liver transplantation, in whom full data including further follow-up biopsy samples were avail…

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Traditional neuroimaging markers of small-vessel disease focus on late-stage changes. We aimed to adapt a method of venular assessment at 7T for use in older adults. We hypothesized that poorer venular morphologic characteristics would be related to other small-vessel disease neuroimaging markers and a higher prevalence of small-vessel disease-Alzheimer disease risk factors.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Venules were identified in periventricular ROIs on SWI and defined as tortuous or straight. The tortuosity ratio was defined as total tortuous venular length divided by total…
