Congenital Inner Ear Abnormalities and COVID-19-Related Ear Infections.

Congenital deformities of the labyrinth of the inner ear may be associated with an increased risk of infection and varying degrees of otologic and vestibular dysfunction. Lateral semicircular canal abnormalities specifically can be associated with either normal hearing or hearing loss (conductive or sensorineural). In our patient, the acute symptoms of vertigo and tinnitus coincided with the diagnosis of COVID-19. It is unlikely that the symptomatology was related to the acute infection, even in the face of the underlying congenital abnormality. It has been shown that there is no correlation b

[Metavestibular disorders and disorders of higher vestibular function].

Vertigo, instability, oscillopsia and concomitant autonomic disorders are classical and well-known symptoms of vestibular disorders. At the same time, recent studies suggest that there are more complicated vestibular dysfunctions caused by the cortical projections of the vestibular system. The central vestibular system includes parietal temporal cortex and insular, anterior intraparietal sulcus, posterior parietal and medial parts of the superior temporal gyrus, singular gyrus retrosplenial cortex, hippocampus and parahippocampal area. The central part of the vestibular system closely interact

The vestibular system: balancing more than just the body.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The review presents a selection of recent studies in the field of vestibular neuroscience, including how vestibular stimulation modulates space and body perception. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent neuroimaging studies identified the operculo-insular/retroinsular cortex as the core vestibular cortex and showed how it is reorganized after vestibular dysfunctions. Subliminal galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS) induces long-term reduction of hemispatial neglect and improves vertical perception in stroke patients, but the underlying mechanisms remain to be identified. Healthy voluntee

Heads or tails: do stranded fish (mosquitofish, Gambusia affinis) know where they are on a slope and how to return to the water?

Aquatic vertebrates that emerge onto land to spawn, feed, or evade aquatic predators must return to the water to avoid dehydration or asphyxiation. How do such aquatic organisms determine their location on land? Do particular behaviors facilitate a safe return to the aquatic realm? In this study, we asked: will fully-aquatic mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis) stranded on a slope modulate locomotor behavior according to body position to facilitate movement back into the water? To address this question, mosquitofish (n = 53) were placed in four positions relative to an artificial slope (30° inclina

Progress toward development of a multichannel vestibular prosthesis for treatment of bilateral vestibular deficiency.

This article reviews vestibular pathology and the requirements and progress made in the design and construction of a vestibular prosthesis. Bilateral loss of vestibular sensation is disabling. When vestibular hair cells are injured by ototoxic medications or other insults to the labyrinth, the resulting loss of sensory input disrupts vestibulo-ocular reflexes (VORs) and vestibulo-spinal reflexes that normally stabilize the eyes and body. Affected individuals suffer poor vision during head movement, postural instability, chronic disequilibrium, and cognitive distraction. Although most individua

Strategies and synergies underlying replacement of vestibular function with prosthetic feedback.

This study investigated changes in movement strategies and muscle synergies when bilateral peripheral vestibular loss (BVL) subjects are provided prosthetic feedback of their pelvis sway during stance. Six BVL subjects performed 3, for them, difficult stance tasks: standing eyes closed, on a firm surface, on a foam surface, and standing eyes open on foam. Movement strategies were recorded as roll and pitch ratios of upper and lower body velocities with body-worn gyroscopes. Surface EMG recordings were taken from two pairs of antagonistic, lower leg and trunk muscles in order to note synergy ch

Respiratory impact on motion sickness induced by linear motion.

Motion sickness incidence (MSI) for vertical sinusoidal motion reaches a maximum at 0.167 Hz. Normal breathing frequency is close to this frequency. There is some evidence for synchronization of breathing with this stimulus frequency. If this enforced breathing takes place over a larger frequency range (0.05-0.8 Hz) and whether this contributes to the high MSI at 0.167 Hz was investigated. Sinusoidal motion (amplitude 0.3 g, frequencies 0.05, 0.1, 0.2, 0.4, and 0.8 Hz) was applied. Nausea with the MISC-scores and respiratory parameters, such as tidal volume, respiratory frequency, end-tidal CO

[Research of experimental fistula stimuli vestibule evoked response].

OBJECTIVE: To investiqate a way of stimulation for experimental vestibul evoked response. The artificial fistula of right upper semicircular canal was made in 12 guineapig. METHOD: Using a fistula stimuli probe device designed specially. RESULT: We obtain a potential consisting of 3-4 positive waveforms. We called it the fistula stimuli vestibule evoked response (FsVeR). They had a coincide character. The response disappeared when the animal died. The cervical spinal section, orbital removal and facial nerve removal had little effects to FsVeR. When severe inner ear damage produced by Gentam

Penetrating injury to the brainstem after a nailgun accident: a case study.

Nonfatal penetrating injuries to the brainstem offer a unique opportunity to assess subcortical auditory pathway function. A case study of a patient suffering a severe nailgun accident is presented. Hearing sensitivity and acoustic reflexes were normal bilaterally, but word recognition was reduced for one ear. Auditory brainstem response results indicated waves I-IV were present bilaterally, but wave V was absent bilaterally. Results of vestibular findings indicated central pathology also. Results of audiologic, vestibular, radiologic, neurologic, and physical medicine examinations are discuss

Vestibular compensation in guinea pigs given intravenous lidocaine after unilateral labyrinthectomy.

Intravenous lidocaine has been reported to alleviate vertigo in Meniere's disease and suggested as a possible antivertigo agent after unilateral labyrinthectomy in a study of cats. To further evaluate the effects of intravenous lidocaine on the acute phase of postural compensation, we subjected 13 pigmented guinea pigs to unilateral labyrinthectomy. Seven received intravenous lidocaine (4 mg/kg) immediately after labyrinthectomy. The other six served as controls and received an equivalent-volume injection of normal saline solution. Total body curvature, trunk curvature, yaw head tilt, and roll

[Study of the vestibule in patients with dizziness and vertigo after 60 years of age].

Aging of the vestibular apparatus is shown to consist of processes similar to those occurring in other parts of the nervous system. The recognition of these findings is a first step in the clinical differentiation of presbyastasis from symptoms related to specific disease processes. Authors had reviewed results of otoneurological investigations in the material of 8328 patients and realised that 1034 of them (12.4%) were over-60-year-old. These patients suffered from pathology of peripheral as well as central part of vestibular system.

[The ampullar endolymhatic potential in the guinea pigs].

The purpose of this paper is to understand the physiologic feature of the ampullar endolymphatic potential (AEP) in the guinea pigs (n = 35). The high input impedence microelectrode amplifier was used. The effects of asphyxia, furosemide and ischemia on the AEP were observed. The AEP was 4.55 +/- 1.35 mV, (n = 35) in normal. The potential decreased to 2.8 +/- 0.8 mV from the original level in two minutes of asphyxia. When the respirator was turned on the AEP started to rise abruptly after a latency. In all instances there was an overshoot above the preasphyxia level. When furosemide was admini

[Mechanism of volume regulation of vestibular dark cells of the gerbil].

The volume response of vestibular dark cells of the gerbil to a hyposmotic challenge was investigated. Tissues including dark cells were perfused in preparations in which the perfusate had access to both sides of the epithelium and the height of the dark cell layer was measured as an indicator of its volume. We found that dark cells showed a fast and strong regulatory volume decrease (RVD) and prevented cell swelling in hypotonic media. This mechanism was dependent upon extracellular [K+] and [Cl-]. Ion selectivity of this mechanism was K+ = Rb+ > Cs+ > Na+ = NMDG+ (N-methyl-D-glucamine) for c
