Thermal perception thresholds among young adults exposed to hand-transmitted vibration.

INTRODUCTION: Quantitative sensory testing assesses non-invasively the function of the sensory pathways from receptors to cortex. Studies of workers exposed to vibration support evidence that neuro-sensory hand-arm vibration syndrome also encompasses neuropathy of the small-diameter nerve fibres. OBJECTIVES: To assess the risk of disturbed thermal perception developing among young adults exposed to vibration and hand-intensive manual work. The aim also encompasses the study of alternative covariates in small-diameter nerve fibre neuropathy assessment. METHODS: This cross-sectional multi-cent…

Vibration exercise makes your muscles and bones stronger: fact or fiction?

Vibration transmitted to the whole body or part of it has been extensively studied in relation to the risks to the health and safety of workers. These studies have highlighted the particular danger of lower-back morbidity and spinal trauma arising after prolonged exposure to vibration. However, short-term exposure to whole-body vibration (WBV) or the use of vibrating dumbbells can have beneficial effects on the musculoskeletal system. As a consequence of this encouraging work, many manufacturers have developed exercise devices characterized by vibrating plates transmitting vibration to the who…

Vocal fold vibration irregularities caused by different types of laryngeal asymmetry.

The common symptom of hoarseness is regarded to be caused by (1) turbulences and air loss due to incomplete glottic closure and (2) irregular vibrations of the vocal folds. With real time resolution, the latter can only be observed using high-speed recording techniques (> or =2,000 images/s). In this paper an actual recording method is described, called high-speed glottography (HGG), which quantifies vibration irregularities. It combines imaging and image processing techniques with a functional endoscopy of the disordered voice and delivers motion curves separately for each vocal fold. They ar…

Effect of chest wall vibration on the canine diaphragm during breathing.

High-frequency mechanical vibration of the ribcage reduces dyspnoea in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and the suggestion has been made that this effect might be related to a decrease in central respiratory drive resulting from an increase in afferent inputs from intercostal muscles. In the present studies, the effects of ribcage vibration on central respiratory drive have been assessed without the confounding influence of conscious reactions. The electromyographic (EMG) activity of the diaphragm and the changes in pleural (Ppl) and abdominal (Pab) pressure were measured i…

Vibration parameter extraction from endoscopic image series of the vocal folds.

An approach is given to extract parameters affecting phonation based upon digital high-speed recordings of vocal fold vibrations and a biomechanical model. The main parameters which affect oscillation are vibrating masses, vocal fold tension, and subglottal air pressure. By combining digital high-speed observations with the two-mass-model by Ishizaka and Flanagan (1972) as modified by Steinecke and Herzel (1995), an inversion procedure has been developed which allows the identification and quantization of laryngeal asymmetries. The problem is regarded as an optimization procedure with a noncon…

Functional imaging of vocal fold vibration: digital multislice high-speed kymography.

For the diagnosis of voice disorders, and especially for the classification of hoarseness, direct observation of vocal fold vibration is essential. Furthermore, a quantitative description of the movement of the vocal fold becomes increasingly necessary to document and compare findings as well as the progression of speech therapy. On the base of digital high-speed sequences of vocal fold vibration, multiple "functional images"-also called digital kymograms-are obtained using image- and signal-processing algorithms. Digital kymograms can serve as a powerful aid for visualization, description, an…

Two-dimensional analysis of vocal fold vibration in unilaterally atrophied larynges.

OBJECTIVE: Considerable inconsistencies regarding the vibratory pattern of the vocal fold among patients with unilateral vocal fold paralysis (UVFP) have been reported. These differences are derived from differences in the position, stiffness, and atrophy of the paralyzed vocal fold and other factors among patients. The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of unilateral atrophy of the vocal fold on vocal fold vibration. METHODS: Seven excised canine larynges were studied. The unilateral recurrent laryngeal nerve was severed to cause vocal fold atrophy in four of the seven. The late…

Abnormal perception of the tonic vibration reflex in idiopathic focal dystonia.

Although the pathophysiological basis of idiopathic focal dystonia (IFD) remains unclear, we recently reported abnormal perception of the tonic vibration reflex (TVR) in the biceps brachii in IFD. In this study we examined whether the abnormality affects muscles other than the biceps brachii. A 100-Hz vibration stimulating predominantly the muscle spindle afferent was transcutaneously applied to one muscle tendon of the triceps brachii, the wrist extensor and flexor muscles in 29 subjects with IFD (18 with torticollis, 9 with writer's cramp, 2 with blepharospasm) and 15 control subjects. The b…

Sister chromatid exchange analysis in workers exposed to noise and vibration.

BACKGROUND: There has been a growing interest in the combined effects of noise and vibration. In a population of aeronautical workers diagnosed with vibroacoustic disease (VAD), a large incidence of malignancy was detected. These workers were exposed to large pressure amplitude (LPA) (> or = 90 dB SPL) noise, with energy content concentrated within the low frequency (LF) bands (< or = 500 Hz) and whole-body vibration (WBV). To our knowledge, there are no studies conducted in humans or animals that address the issue of the potential genotoxic effects of vibration combined with noise. In the pre…

Impaired regeneration in rat sciatic nerves exposed to short-term vibration.

We have studied the effects of vibration on the regeneration capacity of the peripheral nerve. A rat model was used where one hind limb was subjected to vibration of defined magnitude and duration while the contralateral hind limb was not exposed to vibration. Seven days later, the sciatic nerves were transected bilaterally and cross-joined giving the following groups: group A, a proximal vibrated nerve end sutured to a non-vibrated distal nerve end; group B, a non-vibrated proximal nerve end sutured to a distal vibrated nerve end, and group C, non-vibrated proximal nerve end sutured to a non-…

Age-related evaluation of peripheral circulation of workers with vibration exposure.

This study was designed to clarify the age variation of the indices in the accelerated plethysmography (APG) for fingers and set the standard ageing curve. The indices of APG of workers with exposure to vibration were compared with those of the standard ageing curves. The subjects were 815 male workers, ranging in age from 18 to 66, without exposure to vibration and without history of hypertension, circulatory diseases or diabetes. Their indices of APG are used establishing the standard ageing curves. The workers occupationally exposed to hand-arm vibration were also the subjects to evaluate p…

Research into hand-arm vibration syndrome and its prevention in Japan.

Research on vibration syndrome in Japan began in the 1930s with studies of the disorder among railway, mining and shipyard workers. In 1947, the Ministry of Labor decided vibration syndrome among operators of rock drills and riveters etc. was an occupational disease. Industrial developments in the 1950s and 1960s promoted the survey of vibration syndrome in mining, stone quarrying and forestry. The Ministry of Labor (1965) and the National Personnel Agency (1966) legally recognized vibration syndrome among chain saw operators as an occupational disease. Guidelines for prevention and early ther…

Vibration induced neurophysiological and electron microscopical changes in rat peripheral nerves.

This study was conducted to clarify the effects of vibration on the peripheral nerves. Rat tails were exposed to vibration (acceleration 56.9 m/s2, frequency 60 Hz, amplitude 0.4 mm for two or four hours daily, six days a week. The maximum motor conduction velocity (MCV), the amplitude of evoked response, and the motor distal latency were measured on rat tail nerves every two months. Thin sections of tail nerves were examined under the electron microscope after 200, 500, and 800 hours of vibration. Neurophysiological and ultrastructural changes in tail nerves increased with the dose of vibrati…

Implementation of double-pulsed holography in evaluation of whole-body vibration.

This study used a unique holographic technique to evaluate the effects of vibration on soft tissues and bones. It was possible to record forced whole-body vibration in humans by holograph interferometry using a double-pulsed ruby laser. The study investigated the manner in which the muscles of the back and vertebral column are affected by vibrations applied to the human buttocks in the sitting position. The subject was exposed to vibration at two frequencies: 40 and 60 Hz (vertical Z axis). Transmission of the vibrations along the subject's back was recorded by means of double-pulsed holograph…

[Changes of vibration frequency due to root resorption of deciduous tooth].

The purpose of this study was to investigate the changes of vibration frequency of a deciduous tooth due to physiological root resorption. The author developed an analysis system for tooth vibration by applying an impact-hammer to the tooth. Peak frequency (Hz) of the tooth stimulated by the impact-hammer was observed by the analysis system. The following results were obtained: 1) Peak frequency of the tooth vibration shifted to a lower range according to the root resorption both in vitro (simulation model) and in vivo (15 children) and a high positive correlation was found between the peak fr…

Changes in spine length during and after seated whole-body vibration.

The authors examined the relation between exposure to seated whole-body vibration (WBV) and an increase in the loss of height of the spine over and above normal diurnal changes. A device for measuring sitting height is described (SD, 1.4 mm for repeated measures). The mean change in body height (diurnal reduction) during two normal days in five men aged 23 to 25 years was 10.6 mm, (SD, 3.2 mm). On the third day, the change in sitting height was measured before and after vertical vibration (5 Hz with a peak-to-peak amplitude of 3 mm, and peak acceleration less than 2 m/s2) and again at the end …
