Increased frequency of retinopathy of prematurity over the last decade and significant regional differences.

PURPOSE: Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) causes childhood blindness globally in prematurely born infants. Although increased levels of oxygen supply lead to increased survival and reduced frequency of cerebral palsy, increased incidence of ROP is reported. METHODS: With the help of a Swedish register for ROP, SWEDROP, national and regional incidences of ROP and frequencies of treatment were evaluated from 2008 to 2015 (n = 5734), as well as before and after targets of provided oxygen changed from 85-89% to 91-95% in 2014. RESULTS: Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) was found in 31.9% (1829/57

A Sight-Threatening Genetic Disorder: A Rare Ocular Manifestation of Von Hippel-Lindau Syndrome.

Von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) syndrome is a rare inherited genetic disorder caused by mutations in the VHL tumor suppressor gene on chromosome 3. It leads to the development of multiple benign and malignant tumors in various organs. This report details a rare case of ocular VHL syndrome in an 11-year-old girl. She presented with progressive vision loss in her right eye and a family history of blindness and brain tumors. On examination, her right eye showed almost total retinal detachment and severe vision impairment, while her left eye had multiple retinal hemangioblastomas with subretinal fluid but

Monovision: a review.

In presbyopia, patients can no longer obtain clear vision at distance and near. Monovision is a method of correcting presbyopia where one eye is focussed for distance vision and the other for near. Monovision is a fairly common method of correcting presbyopia with contact lenses and has received renewed interest with the increase in refractive surgery. The present paper is a review of the literature on monovision. The success rate of monovision in adapted contact lens wearers is 59-67%. The main limitations are problems with suppressing the blurred image when driving at night and the need for

Chromaticity co-ordinates of Ishihara plates reveal that hidden digit plates can be read by S-cones.

BACKGROUND: The Ishihara pseudoisochromatic plates constitute one of the most commonly used screening tools for red-green colour vision deficiencies. Even though hidden digit plates are supposed to be read only by those who are colour vision defective, studies report that some normal trichromats can indeed read these plates. By measuring the chromaticity co-ordinates of the dots used in Ishihara plates, the purpose of this study was to clarify the mechanism that enables normal trichromats and colour vision defectives to read the plates, particularly hidden digit plates. METHODS: Spectrophotom

Optic nerve and chiasm hemangioblastomas in von Hippel-Lindau disease: report of 12 cases and review of the literature.

INTRODUCTION: Optic nerve and chiasm hemangioblastomas are rare tumors, occurring sporadically or in the context of von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) disease. They have only been portrayed in isolated case reports and small cohorts. Their natural history and therapeutic strategies are only scarcely described. To better characterize these rare tumors, we retrospectively analyzed an optic nerve and chiasm hemangioblastoma series of 12 VHL patients. By combining our own experience to a review of all known cases in literature, we intended to create treatment recommendations for optic nerve and chiasm hemang
