Impact of Silicone Oil Removal on Macular Perfusion.

(1) Background: Silicone oil (SO) can be used as an endotamponade during vitreoretinal surgery for retinal detachment. There is emerging evidence that SO filling of the vitreous cavity and its removal may impact macular perfusion. So far, studies have not focused on choroidal sublayer perfusion, yet. (2) Methods: Optical coherence tomography angiography was applied in 19 patients with SO endotamponade before and four weeks after removal of SO. (3) Results: Perfusion of choriocapillaris increased significantly after SO removal, while perfusion of Haller's and Sattler's layer decreased significa…

Suprachoroidal collection of internal tamponading agents through a choroidal hole.

We report two cases of significantly large choroidal holes following penetrating trauma that led to suprachoroidal migration of internal tamponading agents during repair of retinal detachments with proliferative vitreoretinopathy secondary to penetrating trauma. In the first case, choroidal hole was a direct result of the injury and was identified immediately after vitreoretinal surgery which was done for traumatic retinal detachment with hemorrhagic choroidal detachment. In the second case, the hole occurred over a period of several months after the repair of traumatic retinal detachment with…

Autogenous labial mucous membrane and banked scleral patch grafting for exposed retinal explants.

Following retinal detachment surgery, exposure of the scleral explant is uncommon and usually requires its removal. In patients with a history of multiple retinal detachment procedures or continuing vitreoretinal traction removal of an explant can lead to retinal redetachment. In such patients it is preferable to cover and retain an exposed explant rather than remove it. Various techniques have been described to cover exposed explants. If the exposed area is small a conjunctivoplasty or conjunctival graft is usually adequate. The use of banked scleral patch grafts has been described in the man

Temporary keratoprosthesis for surgical management of complicated combined anterior and posterior segment injuries to the eye: combat- versus noncombat-injury cases.

We used a Landers-Foulks temporary keratoprosthesis lens to combine penetrating keratoplasty with vitreoretinal surgery in 21 eyes of 21 patients. Ten of these patients were victims of combat injuries; 11 had traumatic injuries unrelated to war. After a mean follow up of 11 months, satisfactory overall results, ie, an attached retina and a clear cornea, were obtained in nine eyes (42.8%). In two, the retina was attached but the corneal graft was rejected. Eight eyes achieved a visual acuity of 5/200 or better. The visual prognosis as well as the rate of retinal reattachment for the combat-inju…

Postnatal development of the ciliary body and pars plana. A morphometric study in childhood.

The ciliary body of the human eye serves many vital functions and provides important access to the posterior segment of the globe in vitreoretinal surgery. Although embryogenesis and prenatal development of the ciliary body have been well documented, continuing development of the ciliary body during early childhood has not been studied extensively. We determined the lengths of the ciliary body and pars plana in 76 normal eyes of subjects who ranged in age from 1 week to 6 years. The ciliary body was found to be of substantial length soon after birth; it measured a mean of 3.06 mm nasally and 3…
