Neurocognitive function in users of MDMA: the importance of clinically significant patterns of use.

BACKGROUND: Use of MDMA (ecstasy), a serotonin neurotoxin, has been associated with memory impairment and psychological dysfunction. This study examined cognitive functioning in abstinent MDMA users and MDMA-naive controls. METHOD: Participants completed measures of intelligence, motor function, attention, memory span, verbal fluency, immediate and delayed verbal memory, and working memory. They were also assessed for the presence of psychopathology. In addition to comparing cognitive function in MDMA users relative to controls, the possibility that clinically dysfunctional MDMA use increases

Psychological test usage in duchenne muscular dystrophy: An EU multi-centre study.

AIM: During the last two decades brain related comorbidities of Duchenne have received growing scientific and clinical interest and therefore systematic assessment of cognition, behaviour and learning is important. This study aims to describe the instruments currently being used in five neuromuscular clinics in Europe as well as the diagnoses being made in these clinics. METHOD: A Delphi based procedure was developed by which a questionnaire was sent to the psychologist in five of the seven participating clinics of the Brain Involvement In Dystrophinopathy (BIND) study. Instruments and diagno

The association of Helicobacter pylori infection and inflammation with cognitive development in preadolescents.

OBJECTIVE: Limited evidence suggests an association between Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection and diminished cognitive function in children; nonetheless, the role of gastric inflammation remains unclear. We examined the association of H. pylori infection and serum pepsinogens, markers of gastric inflammation, with cognitive function in children aged 10-12 years. METHODS: A prospective cohort study was conducted among 233 infants from Arab towns in Israel, who were followed up at ages 10-12 years. Cognitive function was assessed using the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-IV edi

Blood pressure, left ventricular structure and cognitive development in young children: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: As a consequence of hypertension, left ventricular (LV) structural alterations are associated with cognitive decline in the elderly. However, its role in early childhood remains unclear. We examined the relationship between blood pressure (BP), LV structure, and cognitive function in preschool-aged children. This population is free from aging-related comorbidities. METHODS: We recruited 1279 4-year-old children from the Shanghai Birth Cohort (2018-2021), excluding those with birth defects or developmental delays. BP and echocardiographic assessment were conducted at follow-up. Cog

Posttraumatic Stress Disorder in patients with traumatic brain injury.

BACKGROUND: Severe traumatic stressors such as war, rape, or life-threatening accidents can result in a debilitating psychopathological development conceptualised as Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Pathological memory formation during an alarm response may set the precondition for PTSD to occur. If true, a lack of memory formation by extended unconsciousness in the course of the traumatic experience should preclude PTSD. METHODS: 46 patients from a neurological rehabilitation clinic were examined by means of questionnaires and structured clinical interviews. All patients had suffered a

Event-related potentials to tones show differences between children with multiple risk factors for dyslexia and control children before the onset of formal reading instruction.

Multiple risk factors can affect the development of specific reading problems or dyslexia. In addition to the most prevalent and studied risk factor, phonological processing, auditory discrimination problems have also been found in children and adults with reading difficulties. The present study examined 37 children between the ages of 5 and 6, 11 of which had multiple risk factors for developing reading problems. The children participated in a passive oddball EEG experiment with sinusoidal sounds with changes in sound frequency, duration, or intensity. The responses to the standard stimuli sh

Computational modeling reveals distinct effects of HIV and history of drug use on decision-making processes in women.

OBJECTIVE: Drug users and HIV-seropositive individuals often show deficits in decision-making; however the nature of these deficits is not well understood. Recent studies have employed computational modeling approaches to disentangle the psychological processes involved in decision-making. Although such approaches have been used successfully with a number of clinical groups including drug users, no study to date has used computational modeling to examine the effects of HIV on decision-making. In this study, we use this approach to investigate the effects of HIV and drug use on decision-making

The long-term effects of traumatic brain injury on the coordinative function of the central executive.

The objective of this study was to compare the coordinative function of the central executive of working memory in matched groups of controls and persons with traumatic brain injury (TBI) with long-term impairments in functioning, using a dual-task paradigm. The dual-task procedure required participants to complete digit span and tracing tasks separately and then together to produce a change index that reflects loss of productivity on the dual trial. A TBI group and a matched group of controls were compared on this task and on ratings of social competency and neuropsychological tests. The two
