The behavioral reactions of a snake and a turtle to abrupt decreases in gravity.

We report here on the behavioral reaction of two reptiles to abrupt decreases in gravity. One striped rat snake, Elaphe quadrivirgata, and three striped-neck pond turtles, Mauremys japonica, were exposed to microgravity on parabolic flight, during the filming of a documentary for the NHK television station in Japan. The video films revealed that the snake reflexively responded to the shift from hyper- to hypogravity by taking up a defensive posture--on the first parabola, the snake struck at itself. The turtles actively extended their limbs and hyper-extended their neck in microgravity, a post

LBNP-induced changes in plasma cGMP with and without head down tilt bed rest.

This investigation was conducted to test the following hypotheses: 1) If simulated orthostasis (LBNP) reduces plasma cGMP; 2) if simulated microgravity alters any such LBNP-induced effect; and 3) if simulated microgravity reduces resting plasma cGMP levels. In addition, we studied the time-course of thoracic impedance during, LBNP and asked if there is heart rate/blood pressure reduction after LBNP. During real and simulated spaceflight, blood is re-distributed throughout the vasculature along the body axis, vascular mechanoreceptor loads are altered, "excess" fluid is lost from the organism,

Tail-Suspension Model of Simulated Microgravity-Induced Functional Dyspepsia in Rats: Behavioral, Motility, and Brain-Gut Peptide Alterations.

Animal models are essential for elucidating human disease mechanisms and advancing translational research. Here, we used a well-established rat tail-suspension model to investigate the pathophysiological changes associated with simulated microgravity-induced functional dyspepsia (FD) and to evaluate its utility for preclinical to clinical translation. Thirty male Wistar rats were randomly assigned to control, simulated weightlessness using hindlimb unloading (HU), and domperidone groups. The HU model was induced by 21-day tail suspension, a widely accepted ground-based platform for simulating …

Cardiorespiratory responses to physical work during and following 17 days of bed rest and spaceflight.

To determine the influence of a 17-day exposure to real and simulated spaceflight (SF) on cardiorespiratory function during exercise, four male crewmembers of the STS-78 space shuttle flight and eight male volunteers were studied before, during, and after the 17-day mission and 17 days of -6 degrees head-down-tilt bed rest (BR), respectively. Measurements of oxygen uptake, pulmonary ventilation, and heart rate were made during submaximal cycling 60, 30, and 15 days before the SF liftoff and 12 and 7 days before BR; on SF days 2, 8, and 13 and on BR days 2, 8, and 13; and on days 1, 4, 5, and 8

Quantitative magnetic resonance image assessment of the optic nerve and surrounding sheath after spaceflight.

A subset of long-duration spaceflight astronauts have experienced ophthalmic abnormalities, collectively termed spaceflight-associated neuro-ocular syndrome (SANS). Little is understood about the pathophysiology of SANS; however, microgravity-induced alterations in intracranial pressure (ICP) due to headward fluid shifts is the primary hypothesized contributor. In particular, potential changes in optic nerve (ON) tortuosity and ON sheath (ONS) distension may indicate altered cerebrospinal fluid dynamics during weightlessness. The present longitudinal study aims to provide a quantitative analys…

Cardiovascular Exercise Physiology Under Hypoxia, Microgravity, and Heat Stress: A Review with Public Health Implications.

Aerobic exercise capacity, best quantified by maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max), varies between individuals and is dependent on cardiac output (CO) and oxygen uptake in the periphery (a-vO2 diff). Environmental stressors like hypoxia, microgravity, and heat negatively impact these parameters, thereby reducing aerobic exercise capacity. However, in response to acute and chronic exposures to these environments, compensatory processes serve to counteract reductions in VO2max. In hypoxic environments, reduced oxygen partial pressure (PO2) leads to hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstriction (HPV) and a diffus

Hyper-buoyancy flotation increases cervical disc height and reduces vertebral stiffness, with only partial reversal after acute 1 g axial loading.

Exposure to microgravity is associated with stature increases, moderate-to-severe back/neck pain and elevated lumbar and cervical intervertebral disc (IVD) herniation risk post-flight. Whilst lumbar pathophysiology has been investigated, little attention has been placed on the cervical spine. Thus, the aim of this study was to determine the effect of 4 h of hyper-buoyancy flotation (HBF) and subsequent 15 min of upright 1 g exposure on stature, cervical IVD height, cervical muscle cross-sectional area (CSA) and thickness, passive cervical vertebral stiffness, and their association with stature

Effects of the space environment and re-adaptation to Earth's gravity on astronauts' plasma proteome.

We performed a label-free quantitative plasma proteomic analysis on samples from eight astronauts who completed a 6-month mission aboard the International Space Station, using an Orbitrap Fusion Lumos mass spectrometer (MS). Blood samples were collected from each astronaut at different times, i.e., pre-flight, in-flight, and post-flight. We found that the abundance levels of 16 proteins were significantly altered (p ≤ 0.05), particularly in the in-flight samples. The functions of these 16 proteins are associated with four major pathways that pose health risks to astronauts: impairment of the i

Shared mechanisms in neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder and spaceflight-associated neuro-ocular syndrome: Insights into central nervous system fluid dynamics, glymphatic function, and astrocyte dysregulation.

Spaceflight-Associated Neuro-ocular Syndrome (SANS) and Neuromyelitis Optica Spectrum Disorder (NMOSD) represent distinct neurological challenges with intriguing parallels in their disruption of central nervous system (CNS) fluid dynamics and the clinical neuro-ophthalmic manifestations. SANS, affecting astronauts during prolonged spaceflight, is characterized by optic disc edema, globe flattening, and vision changes resulting from microgravity-induced cephalad fluid shifts. NMOSD, an autoimmune astrocytopathy, is driven by aquaporin-4 (AQP4) autoantibodies that compromise astrocytic water reg

The effects of combined environmental factors on the intestinal flora of mice based on ground simulation experiments.

The composition and function of intestinal microbial communities are important for human health. However, these intestinal floras are sensitive to changes in the environment. Adverse changes to intestinal flora can affect the health of astronauts, resulting in difficulties in implementing space missions. We randomly divided mice into three groups and placed each group in either a normal environment, simulated microgravity environment or a combined effects environment, which included simulated microgravity, low pressure and noise. Fecal samples of the mice were collected for follow-up analysis

Suspension syndrome: a potentially fatal vagally mediated circulatory collapse-an experimental randomized crossover trial.

PURPOSE: Suspension syndrome describes a potentially life-threatening event during passive suspension on a rope. The pathophysiological mechanism is not fully understood and optimal treatment unknown. We aimed to elucidate the pathophysiology and to give treatment recommendations. METHODS: In this experimental, randomized crossover trial, 20 healthy volunteers were suspended in a sit harness for a maximum of 60 min, with and without prior climbing. Venous pooling was assessed by measuring the diameter of the superficial femoral vein (SFV), lower leg tissue oxygenation (StO2) and by determinin

Pancreas of C57 black mice after long-term space flight (Bion-M1 Space Mission).

In this study, we analysed the pancreases of C57BL/6N mice in order to estimate the effects of long-term space flights. Mice were flown aboard the Bion-M1 biosatellite, or remained on ground in the control experiment that replicated environmental and housing conditions in the spacecraft. Vivarium control group was used to account for housing effects. Each of the groups included mice designated for recovery studies. Mice pancreases were dissected for histological and immunohistochemical examinations. Using a morphometry and statistical analysis, a strong correlation between the mean islet size

Chemical-garden formation, morphology, and composition. II. Chemical gardens in microgravity.

We studied the growth of metal-ion silicate chemical gardens under Earth gravity (1 g) and microgravity (μg) conditions. Identical sets of reaction chambers from an automated system (the Silicate Garden Habitat or SGHab) were used in both cases. The μg experiment was performed on board the International Space Station (ISS) within a temperature-controlled setup that provided still and video images of the experiment downlinked to the ground. Calcium chloride, manganese chloride, cobalt chloride, and nickel sulfate were used as seed salts in sodium silicate solutions of several concentrations. Th

Effects of microgravity on osteoclast bone resorption and osteoblast cytoskeletal organization and adhesion.

Exposure to microgravity has been associated with several physiological changes in astronauts, including an osteoporosis-like loss in bone mass. Despite many in vivo and in vitro studies in both microgravity and simulated microgravity conditions, the mechanism for bone loss is still not clear. The lack of weight-bearing forces makes microgravity an ideal physical stimulus to assess bone cell responses. In this work, we conduct a unique investigation of the effects of microgravity on bone-producing osteoblasts and, in parallel, on bone-resorbing osteoclasts. An increase in total number of discr

The relative roles of the otolith organs and semicircular canals in producing space motion sickness.

Inflight and post-landing "immunity" to the "coriolis sickness susceptibility test", observed during the Skylab M131 experiment, suggests that the otolith organs play a major role in space motion sickness (SMS). This view is supported by the report that ocular counter-torsion asymmetries correlate with SMS incidence and severity. Further data indicate that sensory-motor adaptation to microgravity includes a process whereby central interpretation of otolith signals is biased from "tilt" toward translation. However, unexpected responses to linear acceleration suggest the importance of gravicepto

Behavior of Japanese tree frogs under microgravity on MIR and in parabolic flight.

Japanese tree frogs (Hyla japonica) were flown to the space station MIR and spent eight days in orbit during December, 1990. Under microgravity, their postures and behaviors were observed and recorded. On the MIR, floating frogs stretched four legs out, bent their bodies backward and expanded their abdomens. Frogs on a surface often bent their neck backward and walked backwards. This behavior was observed on parabolic flights and resembles the retching behavior of sick frogs on land--a possible indicator of motion sickness. Observations on MIR were carried out twice to investigate the frog's a

[Space motion sickness].

This review describes symptoms of space motion sickness (SMS) observed in many cosmonauts during the first day in orbit. It also discusses similar symptoms detected in them upon return to the Earth which constitute the readaptation syndrome. The paper gives a detailed discussion of different theories that explain the etiology and pathogenesis of SMS and the post-flight readaptation syndrome, viz, sensory conflict or sensory mismatch, disorders in the labyrinthine paired function, and blood and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) circulation. It is emphasized that none of the theories used separately can
