Workers' comp care. Part 1.

The care of an injured employee often is a significant challenge for the clinician. While workers' compensation and group health share similarities, there are differences in regulations. In addition to addressing the injury, the doctor also must supply documentation and interact with a claims adjuster and/or case manager more frequently than with an HMO or PPO patient with the identical condition.

Occupation, work-related stress, and personal characteristics among suicide deaths with occupation-related compensation claims in Korea.

OBJECTIVES: This study compared differences in age-standardized suicide mortality rates, personal characteristics (demographics, employment conditions, and details of suicide), and work-related stress by gender and occupation among workers who had committed suicide in Korea. METHODS: Data comprised 413 suicide death claims lodged with the Industrial Accident Compensation Insurance (IACI) from 2010 to 2018, which were coded. We calculated age-standardized suicide mortality rates by gender and occupation. The chi-square test, Fisher's exact test, and t-test were conducted to examine gender diff

Slip, trip and fall injuries in potato, sugar beet and open field vegetable production in Finland.

STF injuries are common in agriculture. The purposes of this study were to assess the magnitude of STF injuries, to identify contributing factors and to propose preventive actions to reduce injuries in potato, sugar beet and open field vegetable production in Finland. The material consisted of 1648 injury claim records and 22 interviews. The analysis showed 45% (n = 740) of the non-fatal injuries were STFs or jumps. Phrase analysis of injury descriptions provided further insight into the characteristics of STF injuries. The current findings suggest interventions should focus on making access p

[Scheuermann disease as predisposition of later spinal disease and its effect on expert assessment in occupational disease examinations].

The Scheuermanns disease is an illness of which the fluoride stage is described as a disorder in growth of the vertebral-intervertebral disk borderline. This stage of the illness ends with the finish of bone growth. Depending on the advanced alterations of the spinal column segments or of the statics of the spinal column up to that point, in later stages of life there will be a higher rate of diskopathies of the lumbar vertebrae and later on of the cervical vertebrae where it often causes arthrosis of the swivel joints. I.e. Morbus Scheuermann is a predisposition for the beginning of diskopath

Identification of low-effort patients through dynamometry.

In recent years researchers have devised a number of methods to detect patients who purposely exert low effort during grip evaluations. This study further defines the five-rung grip test introduced by Stokes and subsequently challenged by Niebuhr and Marion. New data are presented on the rapid exchange grip test. Data were collected on four groups of subjects (sincere normals, normals asked to feign weak grip, patients thought to be sincere, and patients suspected of low effort) using both tests. In calculating the standard deviation of the plotted line of the five-rung grip test, group member

Comparison of individual characteristics and death rates of disabled-worker beneficiaries entitled in 1972 and 1985.

The many changes to the Disability Insurance (DI) program that took place during the early 1980's suggest that there may be significant differences in the characteristics of newly awarded beneficiaries over time. This study compares two cohorts of newly entitled beneficiaries--one from 1972 and the other from 1985--in order to assess changes in individual characteristics and death rates between the pre-1980's and the late 1980's. The 1985 cohort had a greater percentage of beneficiaries with mental impairments and a lower percentage with diseases of the circulatory system. The 1985 cohort was

Chronic toxic encephalopathy among house painters with disability pension.

Among a group of 14 painters accorded a disability pension, 11 showed signs and symptoms of slight encephalopathy. Five of these 11 painters previously had been pensioned with a diagnosis of musculoskeletal disease, while the encephalopathy was unrecorded in the disability pension records. The combined effect of the two diseases may have caused the disability. We considered occupational solvent exposure the most probable cause of the encephalopathy in four of these five painters. This study indicates that case-referent studies based on diagnoses from disability pension registers may lead to un

Hearing loss due to noise trauma.

Three different types of noise-induced hearing loss have been reported in the literature. The two less common types are described here. Three cases of these two types from our clinic are reported. Since these 2 types of noise-induced hearing loss often involve low frequencies it is important to recognize them in compensation cases.

Sleep disturbances and disability following work-related injury and illness: Examining longitudinal relationships across three follow-up waves.

Despite the high burden of sleep disturbances among the general population, there is limited information on prevalence and impact of poor sleep among injured workers. This study: (a) estimated the prevalence of sleep disturbance following work-related injury; and (b) examined the longitudinal association between sleep disturbances and disability/functioning, accounting for reciprocal relationships and mental illness. Longitudinal survey data were collected from workers' compensation claimants with a time-loss claim in Victoria, Australia (N = 700). Surveys were conducted at baseline, 6 months …

Manual materials handling: the cause of over-exertion injury and illness in industry.

It is reported from various sources that overexertion due to lifting, pushing, pulling, and carrying objects accounts for about 27 percent of all compensable industrial injury and illness in the United States. Resulting strain/sprain injuries account for over 50 percent of workmen's compensation clams in many industries. Almont two-thirds of these involve back pain, with reported compensation and medical payments totaling well over one billion dollars annually in the U.S. An estimated 300,000 plus workers will be affected each year, 5 to 10 percent of whom will have a permanent disability and

Quantitative Analysis of Online Labor Platforms' Algorithmic Management Influence on Psychological Health of Workers.

Online labor platforms (OLPs) can use algorithms to strengthen the control of the labor process. In fact, they construct work circumstances with higher work requirements and pressure. Workers' autonomy in behavior is limited, which will have a great influence on their labor psychology. In this paper, taking the online take-out platform as an example and by using a qualitative study of take-out riders' delivery processes, which were supplemented by semi-structured, in-depth interviews with online platform executives and engineers, we used grounded theory to explore the influencing factors of OL
