It has been established rather surely that patients with chronic liver disease, Crohn's disease, chronic pancreatis and celiac disease are deficient in zinc and vitamin A. A large number of clinical symptoms can be caused by these deficiencies, due to the fact that these compounds have numerous functions. The interaction of low doses of alcohol and marginal zinc deficiency during gestation was studied in pregnant mice and their fetuses. The combination of the two agents at subteratogenic doses was related to increased external and internal defects. Pregnant mice fed a diet containing 10 micrograms/g zinc were orally dosed with 2.0 micrograms/g of 50% ethanol for 18 days of pregnancy. In order to assess zinc status in patients with chronic renal failure (CRF) plasma and erythrocyte zinc levels were determined in 13 patients undergoing regular haemodialysis. Additional determinations of plasma copper, plasma and erythrocyte magnesium and potassium were also performed. The prostate has long been considered to be a site of sequestration of Trichomonas vaginalis. From this reservoir, organisms are thought to be shed during intercourse and produce repeated infections in the female genitourinary tract. Bacteria known to cause prostatitis are inhibited by concentrations of zinc found in uninfected prostatic secretions. The present study demonstrates a similar inhibitory effect of zinc on the growth of T. vaginalis. This finding would suggest that, in otherwise healthy males, the prostate is not likely to be a reservoir for latent infection by these organisms.

1. A technique is described for the measurement of the extent of 65Zn absorption by different regions of the intestine in the intact rat. Literary data on the intoxications with tin containing chemicals are reviewed. Attention is called to the fact, that the value of the DL of the chlorides in some works are mistaken for the sulphates and vice versa. Several cases of acute intoxication with soldering-water are reported. In these cases both the medical history and the autopsy findings referred only to intoxication with hydrochloric acid and the effect of other toxic agents was not suspected.

Low levels of zinc in serum and high in blood clots were found in 12 patients with Down's syndrome (DS). They also had an immune deficiency characterized by depressed neutrophil chemotaxis, skin hypersensitivity and lymphocyte responsiveness to PHA in vitro. Human protein-energy malnutrition and zinc deficiency have common clinical features. These were related to the plasma zinc concentrations in 42 severely malnourished children. A low plasma zinc concentration was strongly associated with nutritional edema but not with the degree of edema or the plasma albumin concentration.
