Increasing stereotypy in adult zebra finch song correlates with a declining rate of adult neurogenesis.

Adult neurogenesis is often correlated with learning new tasks, suggesting that a function of incorporating new neurons is to permit new memory formation. However, in the zebra finch, neurons are added to the song motor pathway throughout life, long after the initial song motor pattern is acquired by about 3 months of age. To explore this paradox, we examined the relationship between adult song structure and neuron addition using sensitive measures of song acoustic structure. We report that between 4 and 15 months of age there was an increase in the stereotypy of fine-grained spectral and temp

Effects of prolonged noise exposure in chinchillas with severed middle ear muscles.

Using the round window-recorded cochlear microphonic as the index of acoustic reflex activity, we noted a decay in the strength of middle ear muscle contraction in the chinchilla following an eight hour exposure to octave band noise (500 Hz. center frequency, 95 dB. sound pressure level). On the basis of this observation it was concluded that the prolonged exposure reduced the effectiveness of the acoustic reflex in protecting the cochlea. This reduction, however, may have been underestimated if the exposure was also sufficient to reduce cochlear output. The present investigation examined this

Low-Perturbation Whole-Blood CD11b Measurement by Biomimetic Acoustofluidic Preprocessing and Wash-Free Microsphere-Competition Readout.

Quantifying CD11b in whole blood from patients with sepsis is analytically challenging because conventional preprocessing can perturb activation state and bias the measured surface-marker abundance. To address this limitation, we report a biomimetic-acoustic cooperative platform for rapid CD11b-based neutrophil activation readout. CD11b expression is transduced into a quantitative microsphere-depletion signal using a competitive microsphere format, and residual microspheres are identified and counted by an object-detection model assisted by frequency-domain image-quality features to improve ro

Quantifying changes in the Laccadive Sea soundscape: A comparison of the COVID-19 pandemic and post-pandemic periods.

The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on worldwide trade and human activities extended even to ocean depths, resulting in changes in underwater acoustic environments. This study emphasizes the deep water soundscape of the Laccadive Sea by performing passive acoustic measurements over two distinct periods-November 2020-May 2021 and March 2022-December 2022-to reveal temporal variations and underlying patterns during the COVID-19 pandemic and post-pandemic periods. This research focuses on a comprehensive analysis of ambient noise spanning a frequency range from 20 to 2000 Hz. Biophonic sources do

Bio-inspired helical pantograph arms for aerodynamic noise suppression in high-speed trains.

The pantograph is a major aerodynamic-noise source on high-speed trains, where vortices around pantograph arms and the panhead dominate sound generation. Inspired by seal whiskers and butterfly antennae, this study proposes two bio-inspired helical arm designs-twisted and coiled-implemented on the pantograph. Numerical simulations employ improved delayed detached Eddy simulation (IDDES), the Ffowcs Williams-Hawkings (FW-H) acoustic analogy, and the acoustic perturbation equation (APE) to assess three pantograph configurations: cylindrical, twisted, and coiled. The twisted configuration yields

Ultrasound-enhanced catalytic hairpin assembly capable of ultrasensitive microRNA biosensing for the early screening of Alzheimer's disease.

Catalytic hairpin assembly (CHA) is a promising enzyme-free, isothermal signal amplification strategy, but the relatively time-consuming strand replacement limits its application scenarios. Here, we developed an ultrasound-enhanced catalytic hairpin assembly (UECHA) biosensing platform for early screening of Alzheimer's disease by introducing a portable acoustic-drive platform with functionalized microspheres for effective biomarkers enrichment and fluorescence enhancement. By constructing a gradient ultrasonic field in a microcavity, the platform concentrates the functionalized microspheres i

The mechanisms of harmonic sound generation during phonation: A multi-modal measurement-based approach.

Sound generation during voiced speech remains an open research topic because the underlying process within the human larynx is hardly accessible for direct measurements. In the present study, harmonic sound generation during phonation was investigated with a model that replicates the fully coupled fluid-structure-acoustic interaction (FSAI). The FSAI was captured using a multi-modal approach by measuring the flow and acoustic source fields based on particle image velocimetry, as well as the surface velocity of the vocal folds based on laser vibrometry and high-speed imaging. Strong harmonic so

Assessment of speech production with dentures by electromagnetic articulography.

This report investigates the use of electromagnetic articulography (EMA) to compare basic speech patterns between a patient with traditional dentures to those of a normally dentate person. The goal is to assess the efficacy of traditional dentures in order to generate clinical data and works towards the improvement of denture design. Kinematic and acoustic data were acquired for these two subjects using a variety of repetitive vowel-consonant-vowel tasks. Spatiotemporal parameters indicating dynamic properties of the tongue blade and jaw movements, and timing coordination of the movements betw

Classification of glottic insufficiency and tension asymmetry using a multilayer perceptron.

OBJECTIVE: Laryngeal function can be evaluated from multiple perspectives, including aerodynamic input, acoustic output, and mucosal wave vibratory characteristics. To determine the classifying power of each of these, we used a multilayer perceptron artificial neural network (ANN) to classify data as normal, glottic insufficiency, or tension asymmetry. STUDY DESIGN: Case series analyzing data obtained from excised larynges simulating different conditions. METHODS: Aerodynamic, acoustic, and videokymographic data were collected from excised canine larynges simulating normal, glottic insuffici

A multi-dimensional approach to gradient change in phonological acquisition: a case study of disordered speech development.

The purpose of the current study is to document phonological change from a multidimensional perspective for a 3-year-old boy with phonological disorder by comparing three measures: (1) accuracy of consonant productions, (2) dynamic assessment, and (3) acoustic analysis. The methods included collecting a sample of the targets /s, [symbol: see the text], t[symbol: see the text], and d[symbol: see the text]/ produced in single words and repeated over time. The samples were analysed using phonetic transcription and acoustic measures of duration, spectral mean, and spectral variance. A dynamic asse

Multidimensional voice evaluation in pretreatment glottic carcinoma.

It is generally accepted that, in glottic carcinoma, the voice will deteriorate, even in the early stages. This paper reports the degree of hoarseness and multidimensional vocal evaluation of glottic carcinoma patients. Forty-seven male glottic carcinoma patients and a control group of 13 normal subjects were included in this study involving psychoacoustic evaluation by doctors, acoustic analysis, phonogram, maximum phonation time and stroboscopy before treatment. A normal voice or mild hoarseness by psychoacoustic evaluation was found in 35% of cases with T1 and T2 glottic carcinoma. Patients

Timing and nature of wheezing at the endpoint of a bronchial challenge in preschool children.

Bronchial reactivity to inhaled agents in preschool children can be undertaken by auscultating the lungs to detect wheezing, but there is a lack of information on when wheeze first appears at the endpoint of the challenge and on the acoustic characteristics of the wheeze. We recorded breath sounds continuously during tidal breathing inhalation challenges with adenosine 5'-monophosphate, using sensors attached over each upper lobe in 80 preschool children. In 35 children, the challenge was considered positive by a pediatrician who determined the endpoint by detecting wheeze on auscultation afte

Effects of electrical stimulation of the inferior colliculus on 2f1-f2 distortion product otoacoustic emissions in anesthetized guinea pigs.

The effects of electrical stimulation of the inferior colliculus (IC) on the activation of olivocochlear nerve fibers were investigated in guinea pigs in which the 2f1-f2 distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAE) were recorded. Animals were anesthetized with ketamine (33 mg/kg) and xylazine (6.6 mg/kg). Bipolar electrical stimulation of the IC by a train of pulses with currents less than the threshold for evoking muscle twitches resulted in a small depression of the DPOAE amplitude by 0.1-2 dB. The maximal effect was observed when the stimulating electrodes were located in the rostro-me

Sex- and age-related elevation of cochlear nerve envelope response (CNER) and auditory brainstem response (ABR) thresholds in C57BL/6 mice.

The C57BL/6 mouse has long been considered, in scores of published studies, as a model of early adult-onset, progressive sensorineural hearing loss (presbycusis). The auditory brainstem response (ABR) has most often been used in these studies as a measure of functional loss. Whereas the ABR measures the response to a rapid acoustic onset, the cochlear nerve envelope response (CNER) measures the ability of cochlear nerve axons to respond to the low frequency modulations of the entire acoustic waveform, acoustic changes that are utilized in vocalizations and music. The present study compared the

Electrophysiological aspects of the middle ear muscle reflex in the rat: latency, rise time and effect on sound transmission.

The latency, the rise time and the influence of the acoustic reflex on sound transmission were investigated in the adult rat during ketamin anesthesia. This was done by recordings of the cochlear microphonics (CM) and electromyographic (EMG) recordings of the reflex responses of the tensor tympani muscle. The acoustic reflex was elicited by contralateral acoustic stimuli of which the intensity and frequency was varied. Ipsilaterally, the effect on sound transmission was determined by estimating the change in amplitude of the CM's of ipsilateral administered subliminal stimuli. It was shown tha

Training effects on vowel production by two profoundly hearing-impaired speakers.

Two profoundly hearing-impaired adolescents received systematic speech training to improve their production of the vowels /i/ and /ae/. Acoustic measures of F1, F2, and duration, and listener judgements of vowel acceptability, were used to quantify vowel production before and after training. Both subjects demonstrated significant changes in their production of the two vowels at the acoustic and perceptual levels following treatment. The changes were highly individualized. For some features, significant improvement occurred posttreatment with differences between the hearing-impaired subject and

Reflex "delay" in sensorineural hearing-loss.

Delay of the acoustic reflex is concerning the latency and the rise-time of the response. The magnitude of these parameters is correlated with the stimulus characteristics but it is also modified by the instrumentation. Normative data obtained with commercial instruments demonstrate statistically meaningful differences of latency depending on age groups, ipsi-or contralateral recording, monophasic or biphasic deflection, which is also a normal response in about 12% of ears. The value are comprised within 150 ms for ipsilateral recording and 200 ms for the contralateral recording. The interaura

Radiotoxicity after conformal radiation therapy for benign intracranial tumors.

Acoustic schwannomas, skull base meningiomas, and pituitary adenomas are benign intracranial tumors frequently managed with radiotherapy. Control rates after treatment for each of these tumors are generally high, and toxicity from treatment is relatively low. Side effect profiles depend on the tumor location, the volume treated, the dose delivered, and the presence of nearby critical structures. In addition, patient-specific factors, such as hypertension and diabetes, may increase a patient's risk for complications. This article reviews radiotoxicity after conformal radiation therapy for acous
