PGA-TMC/PTMC/nHA composite membrane with synergistic barrier and osteogenic functions for enhanced bone defect regeneration.

Balancing mechanical strength, controllability of degradation and bioactivities, remains a significant challenge for absorbable barrier membranes in guided bone regeneration (GBR) for the treatment of bone defects. To overcome these limitations, a novel absorbable synthetic PGA-TMC/PTMC/nHA (PGTTH) barrier membrane was developed using electrospinning technology to prolong barrier duration and promote rapid bone repair. The PGTTH membrane integrates three functional components in a one-step fabrication process: a poly (glycolic acid-co-trimethylene cabonate) (PGA-TMC) copolymer matrix providing

Hyaluronic acid-based biomaterials for the treatment of osteosarcoma and postoperative bone repair.

Osteosarcoma is a common malignant bone tumor in adolescents. Clinical treatments face major challenges, including postoperative recurrence, refractory bone defects, and inadequate targeting of chemotherapeutic drugs. Hyaluronic acid (HA), a natural component of the human extracellular matrix, serves as an ideal material for integrating osteosarcoma therapy and postoperative bone regeneration, attributed to its unique properties including CD44-mediated tumor targeting, tumor microenvironment-responsive degradation, excellent biocompatibility, and functional tunability. This review summarizes r

Nerve Cell Responses to Biocompatible RGO-Chitosan-CMC Nanofiber Composite Membranes.

Peripheral nerve injuries are common traumas that are difficult to overcome. Although nerve grafting can quickly recover nearly all sensitivity and function, graft availability remains an issue. Research has focused on ways to directly rebuild and promote the healing of damaged nerves using surgically implanted scaffolds. Nerve regeneration can be further promoted through strategies aimed at enhancing the regenerative microenvironment, such as improving the electrical conductivity of nerve guidance conduits. In this study, composite films of chitosan (Ch) and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) nano

Moxifloxacin-conjugated graphene oxide: Antimicrobial, anti-adhesive and cell-selective properties supporting its potential for future biomedical coatings.

Graphene oxide (GO) provides a versatile platform for the development of antimicrobial and anti-adhesive materials, particularly when combined with covalently immobilized bioactive compounds but translating antibiotic activity into a stable layer without clinically relevant drug leaching remains challenging. Here, we report a covalently engineered GO-moxifloxacin (GO-MOX) composite obtained by grafting MOX onto ethylenediamine-functionalized GO via carbodiimide coupling. The successful functionalization was supported by complementary physicochemical analyses, including FTIR, NMR, Raman, XPS, T

A superhydrophilic zwitterionic hydrogel coating for enhancing long-term anti-bacterial adhesion and anti-encrustation properties of ureteral stents.

Prolonged indwelling of ureteral stents often leads to encrustation, which can cause functional failure and poses a significant clinical challenge. Zwitterionic polymers exhibit excellent anti-fouling performance due to their strong surface hydration. Inspired by this, a multifunctional hydrogel coating based on a trimethylamine N-oxide zwitterionic polymer was developed for polyurethane stents to mitigate encrustation. The coating was fabricated using an innovative approach that combines a superwetting-assisted interfacial polymerization strategy with dip coating technology, significantly imp

Hyaluronic acid-based corneal epithelium-mimicking coating for therapeutic contact lenses to manage dry eye disease and prevent bacterial keratitis.

Dry eye disease (DED) is a common ocular surface disorder characterized by tear-film instability and an increased risk of bacterial keratitis (BK). Inspired by the hydrophilic glycocalyx of native corneal epithelium with intrinsic antibacterial activity, we developed a corneal epithelium-mimicking hydrogel coating for therapeutic contact lenses (CLs) to manage DED and prevent BK. The HA/DC coating was fabricated via a mild, one-pot cross-linking of hyaluronic acid (HA) and the antibacterial silane coupling agent DC5700, forming a robust, hydrophilic, and lubricious network firmly anchored on C

Biotube/Biosheet as a collagen-based scaffold for vaginal reconstruction: evaluation in a rat model.

PURPOSE: Biotube/Biosheet, collagenous tissue membranes generated by in-body tissue architecture, have been used as scaffolds in various tissue engineering applications. However, their use in vaginal reconstruction has not been reported. This study aimed to evaluate the biocompatibility and potential utility of Biotube/Biosheet as scaffolds for vaginal reconstruction in a rat model. METHODS: A cylindrical mold was implanted subcutaneously on the backs of rats to generate Biotube/Biosheet. Two models were established: a partial defect of the posterior vaginal wall and a complete circumferentia

Smart In Situ-Forming Ocular Therapeutics for Dry Eye Disease: Bridging Biomaterials, Nanotechnology, and Clinical Translation.

Dry eye disease (DED) is a multifactorial inflammatory condition of the ocular surface that significantly impairs quality of life through tear film instability and chronic irritation. Despite the prevalence of DED, conventional topical therapies are hindered by poor ocular bioavailability (< 7%) due to rapid precorneal clearance and restrictive anatomical barriers. Stimuli-responsive in situ forming systems have emerged as a transformative strategy to overcome these limitations by undergoing a "sol-to-gel" transition in response to physiological triggers such as temperature, pH, or ionic stren

Mn-TA nanoparticle-reinforced hydrogel coating on TiO2 nanotube implants for enhanced osseointegration via antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and osteogenic activities.

Excessive oxidative stress and associated inflammation significantly impair bone regeneration around implants. To address this, we developed a novel therapeutic strategy based on metal-polyphenol nanoparticles self-assembled from tannic acid (TA) and manganese ions (Mn2+). These Mn-TA nanoparticles (Mn-TA NPs) were subsequently incorporated into a gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA) hydrogel, which was then applied as a coating onto TiO2 nanotube (TNT) surfaces by spin coating. The resulting modified titanium was designated as TNT-GelMA@NPs. Surface and interfacial characterization using scanning ele

Bacterial cellulose-Morchella sextelata mycelium composite disks as scalable, bioactive scaffolds: A promising platform for cultured meat.

Cultured meat, as an emerging method for obtaining protein, is receiving widespread attention. Developing biocompatible, edible scaffolding materials is a critical bottleneck for the industrialization of cultured meat. In this study, we developed a series of microbia-derived, biomass-based composite disk carriers by integrating bacterial cellulose (BC) with mycelium (Myc) from Morchella sextelata via a facile and minimally-processed blend-casting method. This composite is a potential, low-cost alternative to traditional BC-mushroom chitosan (BCMC) carriers in our previous work. Results indicat

Biomaterials and Nanoparticle-Based Therapeutics in Neurodegenerative Diseases: Bridging the Gap Between Innovation and Translation.

Neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, Huntington's, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and multiple sclerosis, represent a growing global health crisis characterized by irreversible neuronal loss, protein aggregation, chronic neuroinflammation, and mitochondrial dysfunction. Central to their therapeutic intractability is the blood-brain barrier (BBB), a highly selective neurovascular interface that excludes nearly 98% of conventional pharmacological agents from the central nervous system (CNS). Nanoparticle- and biomaterial-based delivery platforms have emerged as promisi

Phase-transited lysozyme coating on zirconia abutments for enhancing soft tissue seal and antibacterial activity.

Zirconia abutments lacking intrinsic antibacterial properties and exhibiting inadequate sealing at the zirconia abutments-soft tissue interface may cause peri-implantitis, ultimately leading to implant failure. Simultaneously improving the soft tissue seal while integrating the antibacterial properties of zirconia abutments presents significant challenges. A phase-transited lysozyme (PTL) coating was successfully constructed on zirconia abutments to enhance soft tissue attachment and antibacterial properties, aiming to safeguard peri-implant soft tissue from infection. The PTL coated zirconia

Development of regenerative therapies targeting fibrotic endometrium in intrauterine adhesion or thin endometrium to restore uterine function.

Intrauterine adhesions (IUA) and thin endometrium (TE) represent significant challenges in human reproduction. The condition arises frequently from damage to the endometrial basal layer, leading to fibrous tissue replacing the functional endometrium and impairing the uterus's ability to accept embryo implantation. Conventional treatments, mainly including hysteroscopic adhesiolysis and estrogen therapies, have shown limited success, particularly in severe cases. Regenerative medicine, with its focus on stem cell-based therapies and biomaterials, offers a promising avenue for restoring endometr

Toward Noninvasively Imaging pH at the Surface of Implanted Orthopedic Devices in Live Rabbits Using X-ray Excited Luminescence Chemical Imaging.

X-ray excited luminescence chemical imaging (XELCI) and associated sensor surfaces are designed to noninvasively study, detect, and monitor local chemistry at the surface of modified implanted medical devices during infection. Implants are coated with polymer films containing scintillators and pH indicator dyes that together generate a pH-dependent luminescence when irradiated by X-rays. A focused X-ray beam provides high spatial resolution, while the pH indicator provides chemical sensitivity. A live rabbit pH-imaging study on a scintillator-coated implanted titanium plate evaluates the senso

Polymeric ionic liquid modifier as ion-induced crosslinker and functional enhancer: Facile fabrication of multifunctional gelatin hydrogels for flexible electronics.

Gelatin-based ionic conductive hydrogels (ICHs) are promising materials for flexible electronics due to their favorable intrinsic properties, but achieving superior mechanical performance, high conductivity, multifunctionality, and simple fabrication simultaneously is challenging. Inspired by the ion-induced salting-out effect and the tunability of polymeric ionic liquids, poly(1-vinyl-3-carboxymethyl imidazolium fluoride) (PVCIF) was synthesized as an advanced macromolecular modifier and employed in a one-step soaking method to construct gelatin-based ICHs. The fluoride anions in PVCIF induce

Fabrication of Double-Network Hydrogel Based on N,O-carboxymethyl chitosan, Aldehyde Hyaluronate, and Alginate for 3D Bio-Ink Applications.

This study fabricates and characterizes novel double-network hydrogels for 3D bio-ink applications, combining N,O-carboxymethyl chitosan (NOCC), aldehyde hyaluronate (AHy), and alginate (Alg). The initial Schiff base-cross-linked network (NOCC-AHy-Alg) is enhanced with a second ionic Ca2+ cross-linking, optimized via an internal suspension method (CaCO3/glucono-δ-lactone). Optimal parameters are 0.2 m CaCO3 and 0.1 m glucono-δ-lactone with a 1-h immersion, proving superior to external CaCl2 immersion. This internal approach yields a more robust network with improved compressive strength, dimen
