BACKGROUNDS: Poverty is a complex and multifaceted global public health issue, particularly prevalent in Ethiopia, including the East Gojjam Zone. Previous studies on poverty have largely relied on unidimensional measures, providing limited evidence on multidimensional poverty (MP). Therefore, this study tried to assess the prevalence and identify the associated factors of MP among rural households in selected woredas of East Gojjam Zone, Northern Ethiopia.
METHODS: A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted in the fall of 2020 in randomly selected woredas of East Gojjam zone, invo

Nitric oxide (NO) is an atmospheric pollutant and climate forcer, as well as an important intermediate in the marine nitrogen cycle. However, the distributions of NO in the ocean and its production-consumption mechanisms remain unclear. This study investigated the spatial distributions of surface NO in the Jiaozhou Bay and adjacent coastal waters off Qingdao based on two cruises conducted in autumn 2023 and spring 2024. Dissolved NO concentrations in the surface seawater ranged from 315.0 to 446.7 pmol L-1 (average: 355.5 ± 44.6 pmol L-1) and 117.4-299.8 pmol L-1 (average: 219.8 ± 63.5 pmol L-

Emission factor data for existing heating appliances are being used to estimate achievable emission reductions with emerging heating technologies. However, the emission factors currently being used for modeling were developed prior to low-sulfur fuel standards and rely on a small number of studies, mostly focusing on steady-state operation. In this work, detailed emission measurements of typical heating equipment fired with natural gas and No. 2 oil under relevant field-use conditions were made to update these emission factors. The work included the emissions and heating performance of three r

BACKGROUND: Maternal hyperthermia, an increasingly prevalent environmental stressor linked to global climate change, is epidemiologically associated with a higher risk of neurodevelopmental disorders, including autism and schizophrenia. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying this neurotoxicity, particularly those leading to long-term neurological deficits, remain poorly understood. This study tested the novel hypothesis that hyperthermia acts not only as an acute physiological stressor but also as a potent genotoxic agent, inducing persistent genomic alterations in neural progenitor cell

BACKGROUND: Despite substantial control gains over the past 2 decades, malaria remains a major public health threat in Ethiopia. The Amhara Region has recently experienced a significant resurgence, threatening to reverse previous progress. However, comprehensive analyses of this resurgence integrating long-term trends, parasite species dynamics, and spatiotemporal patterns are limited. Therefore, this study examines trends, spatial expansion, and control challenges associated with malaria resurgence in the Amhara Region.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 11 years (January 2014-December 202

BACKGROUND: The recent discovery of emerging relapsing fever group Borrelia (RFGB) species, such as Borrelia miyamotoi, poses a growing threat to public health. However, the global distribution and associated risk burden of these species remain uncertain. We aimed to map the diversity, distribution, and potential infection risk of RFGB.
METHODS: We searched PubMed, Web of Science, GenBank, CNKI, and eLibrary from Jan 1, 1874, to Dec 31, 2022, for published articles without language restriction to extract distribution data for RFGB detection in vectors, animals, and humans, and clinical inform

Emerging resistance to artemisinin drugs threatens the elimination of malaria. Resistance is widespread in South East Asia (SEA) and Myanmar. Neighboring Bangladesh, where 90% of infections occur in the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHTs), lacks recent assessment. We undertook a prospective study in the sole district-level hospital in Bandarban, a CHT district with low population densities but 60% of reported malaria cases. Thirty patients presented with malaria in 2018. An increase to 68 patients in 2019 correlated with the district-level rise in malaria, rainfall, humidity, and temperature. Twenty

BACKGROUND: Ascariasis is one of the most important neglected tropical diseases of humans worldwide. The epidemiology of Ascaris infection appears to have changed with improvements in sanitation and mass drug administration, but there is no recent information on prevalence worldwide. Here, we performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the global prevalence of human Ascaris infection from 2010 to 2021.
METHODS: We searched MEDLINE/PubMed, and Scopus databases for studies measuring prevalence of Ascaris infection, published between 1 January 2010 and 1 January 2022. We included s

Lyme disease (LD) risk is emerging rapidly in Canada due to range expansion of its tick vectors, accelerated by climate change. The risk of contracting LD varies geographically due to variability in ecological characteristics that determine the hazard (the densities of infected host-seeking ticks) and vulnerability of the human population determined by their knowledge and adoption of preventive behaviors. Risk maps are commonly used to support public health decision-making on Lyme disease, but the ability of the human public to adopt preventive behaviors is rarely taken into account in their d

Improvements in bull reproductive performance are necessary to optimize the efficiency of cattle production. Female fertility has been enhanced through assisted reproductive technologies as well as genetic selection; however, improving beef bull fertility has been largely ignored. Phenotypes routinely collected at bull semen collection facilities are believed to affect fertility and provide the phenotypes necessary for a genetic evaluation. The first objective of this study was to determine the significant fixed effects for modeling beef bull fertility using data from bull semen collection fac

STUDY QUESTION: Is there a negative relationship, as predicted in the Trivers-Willard hypothesis (TWH), between the intensity of maternal stress and sex ratio at birth (SRB)?
SUMMARY ANSWER: Using a comprehensive data set with multiple indicators of maternal stress, most measures of stress show no statistically significant association with SRB over a period spanning 243 years, indicating no support for the TWH.
WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Evolutionary biologists have proposed a widely discussed hypothesis that women in poor and stressful conditions during pregnancy are more likely to give birth t

Ruminants (and milk production) contribute to global climate change through enteric methane emissions (EME), and any attempt to reduce them is complicated by the fact that they are difficult and expensive to measure directly. In the case of dairy cows, a promising indirect method of estimating EME is to use the milk fatty acid profile as a proxy, as a relationship exists between microbial activity in the rumen and the molecules available for milk synthesis in the mammary gland. In the present study, we analyzed the detailed fatty acid profiles (through gas chromatography) of a large number of

Access to pasture has advantages for cows such as reduced lameness and improved udder health, but also may expose cows to stressors such as extreme heat. The objective of this study was to understand how portable shade affected physiological and behavioral responses of pastured dairy cows in a Canadian summer. Over 8wk, a total of 24 lactating Holstein cows were separated into 2 treatments, one with access to shade and a control without access to shade. The cows were pastured in groups of 4, with 3 field sections per treatment. Instantaneous scan sampling of behaviors (drinking, lying, grazing

Leptospirosis is a widespread and potentially fatal zoonosis that is endemic in many tropical regions and causes large epidemics after heavy rainfall and flooding. Infection results from direct or indirect exposure to infected reservoir host animals that carry the pathogen in their renal tubules and shed pathogenic leptospires in their urine. Although many wild and domestic animals can serve as reservoir hosts, the brown rat (Rattus norvegicus) is the most important source of human infections. Individuals living in urban slum environments characterized by inadequate sanitation and poor housing

OBJECTIVE: In greater Paris and its surrounding (as it is in all France), oxygen is home delivered by not-for-profit (NP) associations or profit-making (PM) health organizations. Both are financed by the national health insurance. This dual context and the current economic climate justify an economic evaluation of all respiratory care for patients with COPD receiving long-term oxygen therapy (LTO). This pragmatic approach identifies the variables that have the greatest impact on direct medical costs and estimates the annual cost for respiratory care per COPD patient.
DESIGN: Retrospective stu

We analyzed racial differences in all-cause mortality rates associated with air pollution in a cohort of military veterans in which 37% of the 70,000 members identified as African-American (black). In this comprehensive analysis, spatial levels comprised individuals, zip-codes, and counties. Temporal levels comprised the 26-y follow-up period (1976-2001) and 4 subperiods. Proportional hazard regression models were used, controlling for individual age, race (white, black), smoking (current, ever), education, height, body-mass index, and systolic and diastolic blood pressure; zipcode-average soc

BACKGROUND: As a neglected cross-species parasitic disease transmitted between canines and livestock, echinococcosis remains a global public health concern with a heavy disease burden. In China, especially in the epidemic pastoral communities on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, the harsh climate, low socio-economic status, poor overall hygiene, and remote and insufficient access to all owned dogs exacerbate the difficulty in implementing the ambitious control programme for echinococcosis. We aimed to design and implement a remote management system (RMS) based on internet of things (IoT) for control

Disease mapping and risk assessment are important tasks in the area of medical and veterinary epidemiology. The development of methods for mapping diseases has progressed considerably in recent years. Geographical Information Systems (GIS), Remote Sensing (RS), and Spatial Analysis represent new tools for the study of epidemiology, and their application to parasitology has become more and more advanced, in particular to study the spatial and temporal patterns of diseases. The present review highlights the usefulness of GIS and RS in veterinary parasitology in order to better know the epidemiol

STUDY QUESTION: Can meteorological conditions modify the associations between NO2 and SO2 exposure and congenital limb defects (CLDs) during the first trimester of pregnancy?
SUMMARY ANSWER: Increases in NO2 and SO2 exposure were consistently associated with higher risks of CLDs during the first trimester of pregnancy; both low- and high-temperature exposure and high air humidity act synergistically with the two air pollutants on CLDs.
WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Animal studies have indicated air pollutants are associated with CLDs, but corresponding epidemiological studies are limited with equiv
