An Innovative Educational Approach to Reducing Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infections: A Case Study.

Best practices for urinary catheter insertion and care are well documented in the literature. However, the development of educational methods to address best practice standards has been relatively stagnant. A novel educational approach to teach practicing providers proper catheter insertion and care was developed under a blended learning model with online videos and hands-on simulations. The education was custom created for each participant role. This education also highlighted the providers' own hospitals' catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI) rates, the negative patient outcom

Intimate partner violence: how clinicians can be an asset to their patients.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) has emerged as a public health concern. It does not consist of physical violence alone, but includes psychological and emotional issues as well. IPV cuts across all cultures, age groups, and socioeconomic classes and necessitates numerous health care visits. It is often difficult to identify those who are affected by IPV when assessing during health care services. This difficulty may be overcome as health care providers become aware of the need to integrate screening as part of the initial assessment. Although it can be difficult to measure the impact of IPV, se

Using a prostate exam simulator to decipher palpation techniques that facilitate the detection of abnormalities near clinical limits.

INTRODUCTION: Prostate carcinoma (and other prostate irregularities and abnormalities) is detected in part via the digital rectal examination. Training clinicians to use particular palpation techniques may be one way to improve the rates of detection. METHODS: In an experiment of 34 participants with clinical backgrounds, we used a custom-built simulator to determine whether certain finger palpation techniques improved one's ability to detect abnormalities smaller in size and dispersed as multiples over a volume. The intent was to test abnormality cases of clinical relevance near the limits o

Adapting an Intervention to Improve Adolescent Sexual Health Assessment and Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis Prescription by Family Medicine Physicians in Alabama.

High HIV incidence in the US South disproportionately affects adolescents, young adults, and Black women. Using a community-engaged approach and intervention mapping, we developed PrEP-Pro, an intervention to support family medicine physician-trainees to elicit a sexual history from and provide pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) to adolescents, with special emphasis on engaging with Black adolescent girls and young women (AGYW). Intervention content includes PrEP curricula, adaptations to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)'s sexual history tool, and a PrEP Champion training prog
