Neuroimaging of Supraventricular Frontal White Matter in Children with Familial Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Due to Prenatal Alcohol Exposure.

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is common in patients with (ADHD+PAE) and without (ADHD-PAE) prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE). Many patients diagnosed with idiopathic ADHD actually have covert PAE, a treatment-relevant distinction. To improve differential diagnosis, we sought to identify brain differences between ADHD+PAE and ADHD-PAE using neurobehavioral, magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and diffusion tensor imaging metrics that had shown promise in past research. Children 8-13 were recruited in three groups: 23 ADHD+PAE, 19 familial ADHD-PAE, and 28 typically developing contr

Theta Oscillations at Subthalamic Region Predicts Hypomania State After Deep Brain Stimulation in Parkinson's Disease.

Subthalamic nucleus (STN) deep brain stimulation (DBS) is an effective treatment for the motor impairments of patients with advanced Parkinson's disease. However, mood or behavioral changes, such as mania, hypomania, and impulsive disorders, can occur postoperatively. It has been suggested that these symptoms are associated with the stimulation of the limbic subregion of the STN. Electrophysiological studies demonstrate that the low-frequency activities in ventral STN are modulated during emotional processing. In this study, we report 22 patients with Parkinson's disease who underwent STN DBS

Defense Mechanisms and Psychological Characteristics According to Suicide Attempts in Patients with Borderline Personality Disorder.

OBJECTIVE: There have been many biological studies on suicide behaviors of borderline personality disorder (BPD), however few studies have sought to psychoanalytic characteristics including defense mechanisms. Therefore, we investigated psychological, symptomatic, and personality characteristics including defense mechanisms in suicide attempters and non-suicide attempters among patients with BPD. METHODS: We enrolled 125 patients with BPD. Forty-two patients with a history of one or more suicide attempts formed the suicide attempters group and 83 patients with no such history formed the non-s

The NIMH Research Domain Criteria (RDoC) Initiative and Its Implications for Research on Personality Disorder.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: We discuss the implications of the Research Domain Criteria (RDoC) initiative for neuroscience research on personality disorder (PD). To organize our review, we construct a preliminary conceptual mapping of PD symptom criteria onto RDoC constructs. We then highlight recent neuroscience research, often built around concepts that correspond to RDoC elements, and discuss the findings in reference to the constructs we consider most pertinent to PD. RECENT FINDINGS: PD symptoms were strongly conceptually tied to RDoC constructs within the Social Processes domain, implicating bra

The Association between Suicide Attempts and Toxoplasma gondii Infection.

OBJECTIVE: Chronic 'latent' infection by Toxoplasma gondii is common and most of the hosts have minimal symptoms or they are even asymptomatic. However, there are possible mechanisms by which T. gondii may affect human behavior and it may also cause humans to attempt suicide. This article aimed to investigate the potential pathophysiological relationship between suicide attempts and T. gondii infection in Korea. METHODS: One hundred fifty-five psychiatric patients with a history of suicide attempt and 135 healthy control individuals were examined with enzyme-linked immunoassays and fluorescen

Adaptation and validation of Richmond Compulsive Buying Scale in Chinese population.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Compulsive buying (CB) is a behavioral addiction that is conceptualized as an obsessive-compulsive and impulsive-control disorder. The Richmond Compulsive Buying Scale (RCBS), a six-item self-reporting instrument that has been validated worldwide, was developed based on this theoretical background. This study aimed to adapt RCBS to the Chinese population (RCBS-TC) to guide future national and international prevalence studies. METHODS: This methodological study was conducted in two phases. Phase 1 involved the forward and backward translation of RCBS, the content and face

Semen collection by electro-stimulation in a variety of bird orders.

It is unquestinable that artificial insemination (AI) offers many benefits to avian conservation programs, but a serious impediment towards implementing AI for wild species is the development of effective techniques to consistently collect good quality ejaculates. Thus, we aimed to examine the success rate of electro-stimulation (ES) in collecting semen from 49 unconditioned males from orders Piciformes, Strigiformes, Accipitriformes, Cathartiformes, Galiformes, Anseriformes and Psittaciformes at different times of the year. Sixty out of 299 ES attempts provided ejaculates with sperm, but coll

Markers of impaired motor and cognitive volition in Parkinson's disease: Correlates of dopamine dysregulation syndrome, impulse control disorder, and dyskinesias.

INTRODUCTION: Dopaminergic therapy in Parkinson's disease (PD) can be associated with both motoric (e.g., dyskinesias) and neuropsychiatric adverse effects. Examples of the latter include Dopamine Dysregulation Syndrome (DDS) and impulse control disorder (ICD), which are separate but related behavioral/psychiatric complications of treatment in PD. Dysregulation of volition characterizes both dyskinesias and DDS/ICD; thus, we analyzed potential disease-related correlates in a large PD cohort. METHODS: We analyzed cross-sectional data from 654 participants collected through the NINDS Parkinson'

Dopaminergic Therapies for Non-motor Symptoms in Parkinson's Disease.

Apart from the typical motor symptoms, Parkinson's disease is characterized by a wide range of different non-motor symptoms, which are highly prevalent in all stages of the disease and have an incisive influence on quality of life. Moreover, their treatment continues to be challenging. In this review, we critically summarize the evidence for the impact of dopaminergic therapies on non-motor symptoms in Parkinson's disease. We performed a PubMed search to identify relevant clinical studies that investigated the response of non-motor symptoms to dopaminergic therapy. In the domain of neuropsychi

Predictors of early relapse among adolescent crack users.

Relapse is associated with a poor prognosis among drug users. Crack cocaine users are more prone to severe dependence because of the intensity of use. Additionally, initiating drug use during adolescence worsens users' prognosis due to the increased rates of impulsivity and other risk behaviors. This study aimed to identify the predictors of early relapse among adolescent crack users discharged from inpatient treatment. A cohort study was conducted with 89 psychiatric inpatients aged 12-17 years from two different hospitals in southern Brazil who met the criteria for crack abuse or dependence.

Resting-State Neuroimaging and Neuropsychological Findings in Opioid Use Disorder during Abstinence: A Review.

Dependence to opiates, including illicit heroin and prescription pain killers, and treatment of the opioid use disorder (OUD) have been longstanding problems over the world. Despite intense efforts to scientific investigation and public health care, treatment outcomes have not significantly improved for the past 50 years. One reason behind the continuing use of heroin worldwide despite such efforts is its highly addictive nature. Brain imaging studies over the past two decades have made significant contribution to the understanding of the addictive properties as to be due in part to biological

Addressing the stimulant treatment gap: A call to investigate the therapeutic benefits potential of cannabinoids for crack-cocaine use.

Crack-cocaine use is prevalent in numerous countries, yet concentrated primarily - largely within urban contexts - in the Northern and Southern regions of the Americas. It is associated with a variety of behavioral, physical and mental health and social problems which gravely affect users and their environments. Few evidence-based treatments for crack-cocaine use exist and are available to users in the reality of street drug use. Numerous pharmacological treatments have been investigated but with largely disappointing results. An important therapeutic potential for crack-cocaine use may rest i

A randomized clinical trial of Cogmed Working Memory Training in school-age children with ADHD: a replication in a diverse sample using a control condition.

BACKGROUND: Cogmed Working Memory Training (CWMT) has received considerable attention as a promising intervention for the treatment of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in children. At the same time, methodological weaknesses in previous clinical trials call into question reported efficacy of CWMT. In particular, lack of equivalence in key aspects of CWMT (i.e., contingent reinforcement, time-on-task with computer training, parent-child interactions, supportive coaching) between CWMT and placebo versions of CWMT used in previous trials may account for the beneficial outcomes favo

Effects of STN and GPi deep brain stimulation on impulse control disorders and dopamine dysregulation syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: Impulse control disorders (ICDs) and dopamine dysregulation syndrome (DDS) are important behavioral problems that affect a subpopulation of patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) and typically result in markedly diminished quality of life for patients and their caregivers. We aimed to investigate the effects of subthalamic nucleus (STN) and internal globus pallidus (GPi) deep brain stimulation (DBS) on ICD/DDS frequency and dopaminergic medication usage. METHODS: A retrospective chart review was performed on 159 individuals who underwent unilateral or bilateral PD DBS surgery in ei

Neuroprotective and neurogenesis agent for treating bipolar II disorder: add-on memantine to mood stabilizer works.

Bipolar disorder, characterized by a dysregulation of mood, impulsivity, risky behavior and interpersonal problems, is a recurrent and often becomes chronic psychiatric illness. However, bipolar subtypes are not often recognized in psychiatric settings, especially bipolar II subtype, until Akiskal and Angst made clear definition to bipolar I (BP-I) and bipolar II (BP-II) disorder in 1999. More and more studies, not only on family inheritance, diagnosis, but also on disease process have been reported that BP-I and BP-II are two different disorders with distinct pathological mechanisms. Effects of acute tryptophan depletion on prefrontal-amygdala connectivity while viewing facial signals of aggression.

BACKGROUND: Reduced levels of serotonin (5-HT) within prefrontal cortex (PFC)-amygdala circuits have long been implicated in impulsive aggression. However, whether lowering 5-HT alters the dynamic interplay between the PFC and the amygdala has not been directly tested in humans. It is known that manipulating 5-HT via acute tryptophan depletion (ATD) causes variable effects on brain responses to a variety of emotional stimuli, but it remains unclear whether ATD affects functional connectivity in neural networks involved in processing social signals of aggression (e.g., angry faces). METHODS: T

Rate-dependent AV nodal refractoriness: a new functional framework based on concurrent effects of basic and pretest cycle length.

The atrioventricular (AV) node filters atrial impulses. Underlying rate-dependent refractory properties are assessed with the effective (ERPN; longest nonconducted atrial cycle length) and functional (FRPN; shortest His bundle cycle) refractory period determined with premature protocols at different basic rates. Fast rates prolong ERPN and shorten FRPN, but these effects vary with subjects, age, and species. We propose that these opposite and variable effects reflect the net sum of concurrent cumulative and noncumulative effects associated with basic (BCL) and pretest cycle length (PTCL), resp
