Evaluating submarining in female human body models: Predicting occurrence and timing through biomechanics and restraint metrics.

OBJECTIVE: Submarining occurs during vehicle crash when the lap belt slips over the pelvis and loads the abdomen. Countering this motion is an interdisciplinary challenge, requiring expertise in biomechanics and restraint design to develop countermeasures and quantitative metrics to predict it. Most prior research into submarining has focused on the 50th percentile male. This study compares small female models to reference sled tests and evaluates two methods of identifying submarining occurrence and timing in Human Body Models (HBMs). METHODS: A 5th percentile female model and age-adjusted 7

Prevalence of Multiple Chronic Conditions in Older Adults with Undiagnosed Mild Cognitive Impairment and Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementias in Primary Care.

BACKGROUND: Most adults aged ≥65 years live with multiple chronic conditions (MCC), and nearly one in four have recognized or unrecognized Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD), including an estimated 7.2 million Americans. Together, MCC and ADRD increase treatment complexity, medication burden, and the risk of adverse outcomes. Among patients who meet clinical criteria for mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or ADRD but lack a formal diagnosis, MCC burden remains unclear. This study examined the association between MCC burden and undiagnosed MCI and ADRD in a diverse cohort of older ad

Does palliative care improve the quality of life for cancer patients in three tertiary hospitals in South Africa?

BACKGROUND: Quality of life (QoL) is a crucial treatment outcome for cancer patients, who often experience significant symptom burden and distress. Despite its benefits, access to palliative care remains limited in many settings, including South Africa. This study assessed changes in QoL before and after palliative care interventions and examined factors associated with QoL improvements. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted among cancer patients referred for palliative care at three tertiary hospitals in Johannesburg, South Africa. Interdisciplinary teams provided palliative ca

Predictive models on patients' eligibility for peritoneal dialysis.

BackgroundPeritoneal dialysis (PD) is being promoted because it is cost-effective and has equivalent outcomes to facility-based hemodialysis (HD). Determining PD eligibility is critical but subjective, with high variability among renal programs. This study aimed to establish a predictive model for PD eligibility among individuals who started treatment with HD. A secondary objective was to identify predictors of PD eligibility and determine if eligible patients went on to receive PD.MethodsThis retrospective cohort study included individuals starting HD at multiple hospitals in Alberta, Canada,

Health-related measures and subjective prognosis of gainful employment among patients with non-specific chronic low back pain in multidisciplinary orthopedic rehabilitation.

Non-specific chronic low back pain (CLBP) restricts participation in society and employment also due to the high psychosocial burden of this condition. Thus, there is an urgent need for rehabilitation of patients with CLBP, which must be determined by a valid diagnosis of psychosocial risk factors. The subjective prognosis of gainful employment (SPE) is considered to indicate the need for medical rehabilitation for back pain. The present study investigated the association between SPE and psychosocial risk factors among individuals with non-specific CLBP undergoing inpatient multidisciplinary o

Scalp reconstruction with locoregional and free flaps - a retrospective cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: Scalp defect reconstruction requires interdisciplinary cooperation to restore soft tissue and osseous defects. While wound closure and form restoration, often a short-term treatment goal, ensures patient survival, the long-term preservation of the head and neck's integrity and aesthetics is crucial for maintaining quality of life. This study aims to compare, quantify, and establish a safe and reproducible approach to various reconstruction options and the postoperative complication profile for individual scalp defect areas. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated pat

Biophysical and Biochemical Characteristics as Complementary Indicators of Melanoma Progression.

The multistep character of cancer progression makes it difficult to define a unique biomarker of the disease. Interdisciplinary approaches, combining various complementary techniques, especially those operating at a nanoscale level, potentially accelerate characterization of cancer cells or tissue properties. Here, we study a relation between the surface and biomechanical properties of melanoma cells, measured by mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). In total, seven cell lines have been studied. Six of them were melanoma cells derived from various stages of tumor prog
