Length Changes of the Medial Patellofemoral Ligament During In Vivo Knee Motion: An Evaluation Using Dynamic Computed Tomography.

BACKGROUND: Medial patellofemoral ligament (MPFL) reconstruction is associated with high complication rates because of graft overloading from incorrect graft positioning. To improve clinical outcomes, it is crucial to gain a better understanding of MPFL elongation patterns. PURPOSE: To assess MPFL length changes in healthy knees from 0° to 90° of dynamic flexion and their relationship with anatomic parameters of the patellofemoral joint. STUDY DESIGN: Descriptive laboratory study. METHODS: Dynamic computed tomography scans of an active flexion-extension-flexion movement in 115 knees from 63

Head-Cervical Spine Motion Measurement in Healthy Population: Comparison of CROM Apparatus and "G-Plus" APP on iPhone.

BACKGROUND: Assessment of head-cervical spine motion (HCSM) is a vital index of functional evaluation for cervical surgery, but there is a lack of HCSM datasets in the healthy population and no suitable tools to measure HCSM in clinical practice. The objectives of this study were to obtain the normal values of HCSM in a healthy population, test the reliability and validity of an APP "G-Plus," and analyze related influencing factors of HCSM. METHODS: We measured HCSM in 6 directions of 500 healthy people with a CROM apparatus and "G-Plus." The intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) was used …

Prediction of Spasticity through Upper Limb Active Range of Motion in Stroke Survivors: A Generalized Estimating Equation Model.

BACKGROUND: We aim to study the association between spasticity and active range of motion (ROM) during four repetitive functional tasks such as cone stacking (CS), fast flexion-extension (FFE), fast ball squeezing (FBS), and slow ball squeezing (SBS), and predicted spasticity models. METHODS: An experimental study with control and stroke groups was conducted in a Medical Center. A total of sixty-four participants, including healthy control (n = 22; average age (years) = 54.68 ± 9.63; male/female = 12/10) and chronic stroke survivors (n = 42; average age = 56.83 ± 11.74; male/female = 32/10) w…

Establishing Confidence Intervals for Normal Radiographic Intracarpal Alignment Throughout the Arc of Wrist Motion: A Cadaveric Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: High-quality lateral radiographs with the wrist in neutral (0°) or near neutral (less than 15° flexion or extension) are felt to be important for diagnosing carpal instability using intracarpal angular measurements, but may be unavailable. In addition, radiolunate (RLA) and capitolunate (CLA) measurement angles for defining carpal instability have poor validation. We sought to establish 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for predicted RLA and CLA throughout the arc of wrist motion in normal cadaveric wrists. METHODS: Fresh frozen cadaveric upper extremities were secured in a limb posi…

Machine learning-based motion tracking reveals an inverse correlation between adhesivity and surface motility of the leptospirosis spirochete.

Bacterial motility is often a crucial virulence factor for pathogenic species. A common approach to study bacterial motility is fluorescent labeling, which allows detection of individual bacterial cells in a population or in host tissues. However, the use of fluorescent labeling can be hampered by protein expression stability and/or interference with bacterial physiology. Here, we apply machine learning to microscopic image analysis for label-free motion tracking of the zoonotic bacterium Leptospira interrogans on cultured animal cells. We use various leptospiral strains isolated from a human …

Numerical investigation of mucociliary clearance using power law and thixotropic mucus layers under discrete and continuous cilia motion.

Mucus layer movement inside the airway system is an important phenomenon as the first defensive mechanism against pathogens. This research deals with the mucus velocity variations inside the nasal cavity using two different power law and thixotropic mucus layers. The cilia movement is replaced with four cyclic velocity profiles at the lower boundary of the mucus layer, while the upper boundary is exposed to the free-slip condition. The effects of boundary conditions and different fluid parameters are evaluated on the mucus flow. Furthermore, the replacement of power law and thixotropic mucus l

Development of dynamic attention: Time-based visual selection for objects in motion between 6-12 years of age.

By approximately 6 years of age, children can use time-based visual selection to ignore stationary stimuli, already in the visual field and prioritize the selection of newly arriving stimuli. This ability can be studied using preview search, a version of the visual search paradigm with an added temporal component, in which one set of distractors is presented (previewed) before a second set that contains the target item. Preview search is more efficient than if all items are presented simultaneously, suggesting that temporally "old" objects can be ignored (the preview benefit). In two experimen

Top-Down Detection of Eating Episodes by Analyzing Large Windows of Wrist Motion Using a Convolutional Neural Network.

In this work, we describe a new method to detect periods of eating by tracking wrist motion during everyday life. Eating uses hand-to-mouth gestures for ingestion, each of which lasts a few seconds. Previous works have detected these gestures individually and then aggregated them to identify meals. The novelty of our approach is that we analyze a much longer window (0.5-15 min) using a convolutional neural network. Longer windows can contain other gestures related to eating, such as cutting or manipulating food, preparing foods for consumption, and resting between ingestion events. The context…

Wearable biosensors for real-time sweat analysis and body motion capture based on stretchable fiber-based triboelectric nanogenerators.

Carbon neutrality is a global green energy revolution meaning that the carbon dioxide can make ends meet. However, with the mushroom of the fifth generation wireless systems (5G) and the Internet of Things (IoT), it is a great challenge for powering the ubiquitous distributed devices, because the battery production and high overhead maintenance may bring more carbon emissions. Here, we present wearable biosensors for real-time sweat analysis and body motion capture based on stretchable fiber-based triboelectric nanogenerators (F-TENG). The F-TENG is made of stretchable conductive fiber (Ecofle…

National Collegiate Athletic Association Swimmers With Glenohumeral Multidirectional Laxity Have an Increased Glenohumeral Joint Range of Motion Profile.

CONTEXT: Adaptations in glenohumeral joint laxity and range of motion (ROM) are prevalent in competitive swimmers. Increased glenohumeral laxity in swimmers has been found to exist in multiple directions. However, it is unclear if swimmers with multidirectional laxity (MDL) possess altered glenohumeral ROM compared with swimmers without MDL. The purpose of this study was to compare the glenohumeral ROM characteristics of external rotation (ER), internal rotation (IR), total arc of motion (ER + IR), and total arc of motion ratio (ER/IR) between swimmers with MDL and without MDL. Our secondary o…

Assessment and implication of rectal filling on vaginal motion in postoperative carcinoma endometrium patients during image guided radiotherapy.

AIM: While delivering radiotherapy it is utmost important to minimize target motion to decrease margins in postoperative gynaecological patients. Hence certain bladder and rectum filling protocols are followed by each institute. During cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) verification, we observed that this motion was more affected by rectal filling. To verify, we retrospectively analysed the vaginal movement and its relation with bladder and rectum filling. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We evaluated CBCTs of 15 patients of carcinoma endometrium. Bladder and rectum both were contoured offline on eac…
