Three Cysticercus bovis cysts were ingested voluntarily and the prepatent period was found to be 84 days. Observation on the frequency of proglottid apolysis for 26 days revealed a total of 85 segments with or without faeces. Abdominal pain began one month before the prepatent period. The cystic duct and gallbladder were ablated in eight patients with acute gallbladder disease who had been treated with minicholecystostomy instead of cholecystectomy because of multiple risk factors. Cochlear sensory and neural degeneration was examined in nine pairs of human temporal bones fixed by perilymphatic perfusion, using phase-contrast and electron microscopy. Four pairs, three from females, had only slight sensorineural degeneration, limited to the very basal end of the cochlea. A predominantly neural degeneration was identified in a 54-year-old male. Determination of the anorectal angle (ARA) and the position of the pelvic floor is, theoretically, very important in understanding the mechanisms of anorectal continence and defaecation. Ten of our AIDS patients developed a unilateral or bilateral spontaneous pneumothorax. Four patients previously had pneumocystis carinii pneumonia and one had pulmonary tuberculosis. In six patients the pneumothorax occurred during the acute period of pneumocystis carinii pneumonia. Five patients were admitted to hospital because of the pneumothorax. The radiological findings varied from a small pneumothorax to almost total pulmonary collapse. Five of the ten patients were discharged after successful treatment of the pneumothorax but, in two, cystic lung segments had to be removed surgically.

We studied 31 patients with acute herpes zoster (AHZ) less than 28 days' duration. Clinical characteristics (pain, allodynia, course of disease) and somatosensory perception thresholds (thermal discrimination, hot pain, and vibration) of the affected dermatome and the contralateral homologous area were assessed. The authors retrospectively evaluated computed tomographic (CT) scans obtained in 21 patients with primary biliary cirrhosis, 13 of whom subsequently underwent liver transplantation. 15 cases of cutaneous fungal infection in children with nontypical clinical findings have been presented. The fungal infections simulated other skin diseases particularly atopic dermatitis in 6 cases, diaper dermatitis in 4 cases and in single cases psoriasis, impetigo, purpura, eczema and exudative multiforme erythema. Mycotic examinations have confirmed the fungal character of lesions. The specific treatment resulted in the complete cure of the skin lesions.

Experimental fungal keratitis was established in the pigmented rabbit by intralamellar injection of Aspergillus fumigutus suspension after superficial corneal trephination. Eleven children with clinical and radiographic findings suggestive of nonosseous subtalar coalition were found to have fibrous bridges at the time of surgery. A second group of 14 children with similar clinical and radiographic findings is being conservatively treated at present. This series of children suggests that a common site of nonosseous subtalar coalition is found posterior to the sustentaculum tali. Diagnosis of nonosseous coalition requires careful examination with computed tomography, with attention to subtle changes in the hindfoot, particularly posterior to the sustentaculum tali.

The lower ankle joint is highly variable in ligamental guidance. It has to be considered in unity with the upper ankle joint. Biomechanical investigations have shown the posterior lower ankle joint to be relatively unstable primarily in supination position. Radiological techniques are available to procedure radiographic evidence to that clinical instability of the lower ankle joint. A surgical approach to instability of both upper and lower ankle joints is proposed in this paper and is discussed in some detail.
