OBJECTIVE: To evaluate possibilites of video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery in diagnosis and treatment of pleuritis. 1997-2002 in Department of Thoracic Surgery and Oncology of Vilnius University Institute of Oncology 206 patients underwent videothoracoscopic procedures (146 (70.8%) of them for pleuritis). A series of pyrazolo[3,4-b]thieno[2,3-d]pyridine alkanoic acid derivatives has been synthesized and evaluated as thromboxane synthetase inhibitors and leukotriene D(4) receptor antagonists. The glutaric acid derivative LASSBio341 (6) was shown to be active in arachidonic acid-induced platelet aggregation (IC(50)=0.14 microM) and inhibition of the contraction of guinea pig tracheal strip induced with LTD(4) (IC(50) = 43.7 microM), displaying still in vivo anti-inflammatory profile.

We present a 5-year survivor with lung adenocarcinoma accompanied by carcinomatous pleuritis who underwent pleuropneumonectomy followed by systemic chemotherapy. The pleural disease was not detectable on the chest roentgenograms or computed tomographic scans. The combination of the surgical procedure and postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy may be a potentially curative treatment in selected patients with carcinomatous pleuritis of lung cancer.

Bleomycin induced lung toxicity was retrospectively analyzed in 39 patients with vulval malignancy (group A) and in 23 patients with head and neck carcinoma (group B). Group A consisted of non-smokers, mean age 69.8 years, who received the drug as intravenous injections. Herein, we provide evidence that during allergic inflammation, CCL25 induces the selective migration of IL-17(+) γδ T cells mediated by α(4) β(7) integrin. Intrapleural injection of CCL25 into ovalbumin (OVA)-immunized C57BL/6 mice triggered the accumulation of γδ T lymphocytes expressing CCR9 (CCL25 receptor) and α(4) β(7) integrin in the pleura, but failed to attract αβ T lymphocytes. CCL25 attracted CCR6(+) γδ T cells producing IL-17 (but not IFN-γ or IL-4). OVA challenge triggered increased production of CCL25 followed by the accumulation of CCR9(+) , α(4) β(7) (+) , and CCR6(+) /IL-17(+)
