Robot-Assisted McKeown Procedure via a Cervical Mediastinoscopy Avoiding an Abdominal and Thoracic Incision.

Total esophagectomy for esophageal cancer is associated with high morbidity. The avoidance of a thoracic access could especially reduce the occurrence of pulmonary complications. Therefore, the combination of a high transhiatal dissection of the esophagus and a neck access with mediastinal dissection of the esophagus appears to be a possibility to reduce the pulmonary risks. However, the access to the posterior mediastinum is very limited with the conventional minimal invasive instruments. These limitations can be overcome by the use of a surgical robot. In this article, we present a novel oper

Surgical management of growing teratoma syndrome: robotic-assisted thoracoscopic resection of mediastinal teratoma.

BACKGROUND: Growing teratoma syndrome is a rare condition defined by the presence of enlarging metastatic lesions on serial imaging that arise after or during systemic chemotherapy for nonseminomatous germ cell tumors. Lesions commonly occur in the retroperitoneum, mediastinum, or lung and are notoriously unresponsive to conventional chemoradiotherapy. METHODS: In this study, we present a dynamic case of a 26-year-old male, who had undergone surgical resection and systemic bleomycin treatment for a metastatic nonseminomatous germ cell tumor, and later developed recurrent masses in his posteri

Outcomes of robotic surgery performed in patients with high BMI class: experience by a single surgeon.

BACKGROUND: Advanced laparoscopic procedures have been shown to be safe in patients with high Body Mass Index (BMI), but conversion rates remain high. This analysis aimed to evaluate the feasibility and clinical outcomes in terms of long- and short-term complications, pain relief of robotic surgery in morbidly obese patients. METHODS: Patients with BMI class I-II-III with endometrial cancer or hyperplasia were treated with robotic hysterectomy (RH). Patients' characteristics, operating room time (OT), type of surgery, length of hospital stay, and incidence of complications were recorded. Reco

Feasibility study: Towards Estimation of Fatigue Level in Robot-Assisted Exercise for Cardiac Rehabilitation.

Socially Assistive Robotics (SAR) has shown to be an important tool to assist patients in physical rehabilitation. SAR is used to provide feedback about patient's state and performance to users and health professionals, therefore, patients are monitored by means of sensor interfaces. In this context, aiming to avoid over-training conditions, one of the most important parameter to monitor is the fatigue level. However, it is usually measured by subjective scales such as Borg scale, thus, there is a need to develop systems that are able to estimate fatigue with greater accuracy. It has been demo…

Bio-inspired untethered fully soft robots in liquid actuated by induced energy gradients.

Soft robotics with new designs, fabrication technologies and control strategies inspired by nature have been totally changing our view on robotics. To fully exploit their potential in practical applications, untethered designs are preferred in implementation. However, hindered by the limited thermal/mechanical performance of soft materials, it has been always challenging for researchers to implement untethered solutions, which generally involve rigid forms of high energy-density power sources or high energy-density processes. A number of insects in nature, such as rove beetles, can gain a burs…

Optical Coherence Tomography Guided Robotic Needle Insertion for Deep Anterior Lamellar Keratoplasty.

OBJECTIVE: Deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (DALK) significantly reduces the post-transplantation morbidity in patients eligible for partial-thickness cornea grafts. The popular "big bubble" technique for DALK is so challenging, however, that a significant fraction of corneal pneumodissection attempts fail for surgeons without extensive DALK-specific experience, even with previous-generation cross-sectional optical coherence tomography (OCT) guidance. We seek to develop robotic, volumetric OCT-guided technology capable of facilitating or automating the difficult needle insertion step in DAL

Robotic kidney transplantation in the obese patient: 10-year experience from a single center.

Despite increasing obesity rates in the dialysis population, obese kidney transplant candidates are still denied transplantation by many centers. We performed a single-center retrospective analysis of a robotic-assisted kidney transplant (RAKT) cohort from January 2009 to December 2018. A total of 239 patients were included in this analysis. The median BMI was 41.4 kg/m2 , with the majority (53.1%) of patients being African American and 69.4% of organs sourced from living donors. The median surgery duration and warm ischemia times were 4.8 hours and 45 minutes respectively. Wound complications

Comparison of uterine scarring between robot-assisted laparoscopic myomectomy and conventional laparoscopic myomectomy.

This study compared uterine wound healing after robot-assisted laparoscopic myomectomy (RM) and laparoscopic myomectomy (LM). Ultrasound was used to evaluate the scar repair of uterine wounds at 1, 3, and 6 months postoperatively. Ninety-three RM and 110 LM patients were enrolled. More myomas excised using RM were type 1∼type 3(51.1%) and more myomas excised using LM were type 4∼type 6(54.2%), p < .001. Both groups had myomas of similar size (RM vs. LM, 9.0 vs. 8.4 cm, p = .115) and weight (RM vs. LM, 322 vs. 274 g, p = .102). The mean myoma number was significantly larger in RM patients than
