Neural correlates of sensorineural hearing loss.

Sensorineural hearing loss is characterized by a relatively well defined set of audiological signs and symptoms such as elevated thresholds, abnormally rapid loudness growth, subjective tinnitus, poor speech discrimination, and a reduction in temporal summation of acoustic energy. Knowledge of the underlying neural mechanisms responsible for some of these auditory distortions has progressed substantially within the past 10 yrs as a result of physiological studies on hearing-impaired animals. Some of the important neurophysiological changes relevant to sensorineural hearing loss are reviewed. O

Functional mobility profiles in pre-operative knee osteoarthritis patients: A cluster analysis of self-report, in-clinic, and free-living measures.

BACKGROUND: Mobility assessment in knee osteoarthritis spans perception (patient-reported outcomes), capacity (in-clinic performance), and performance (free-living behaviour). By integrating all three domains, this study explored emerging pre-operative mobility phenotypes. METHODS: Fifty-six patients awaiting knee arthroplasty completed patient-reported measures (Oxford Knee Score (OKS), quality of life (EQ-5D)), in-clinic testing with markerless motion capture (60-s preferred-pace and, in a subset, 30-s fast-paced walk and five-repetition sit-to-stand), and seven days of free-living monitori

Comparison of the efficacy and drying times of liquid, gel and foam formats of alcohol-based hand rubs.

BACKGROUND: Hand rubs containing alcohols such as isopropanol (IPA) or ethanol (EtOH) are widely used for hygienic hand disinfection, and are presented in different formats (i.e. liquid, gel or foam). AIM: To determine if there is any difference in efficacy between these two active ingredients in the three formats. In addition, an assessment of the drying time was undertaken. Two non-commercial, 'standard' formulations were tested in each format: one containing 60% IPA, and the other containing 80% EtOH. METHODS: EN 1500 tests were performed with 20 volunteers to assess efficacy. The referen

Changes in visually and auditory attended audiovisual speech processing in cochlear implant users: A longitudinal ERP study.

Limited auditory input, whether caused by hearing loss or by electrical stimulation through a cochlear implant (CI), can be compensated by the remaining senses. Specifically for CI users, previous studies reported not only improved visual skills, but also altered cortical processing of unisensory visual and auditory stimuli. However, in multisensory scenarios, it is still unclear how auditory deprivation (before implantation) and electrical hearing experience (after implantation) affect cortical audiovisual speech processing. Here, we present a prospective longitudinal electroencephalography (

Physiological and perceptual responses to incremental exercise testing in healthy men: effect of exercise test modality.

In a randomized cross-over study of 15 healthy men aged 20-30 years, we compared physiological and perceptual responses during treadmill and cycle exercise test protocols matched for increments in work rate - the source of increased locomotor muscle metabolic and contractile demands. The rates of O2 consumption and CO2 production were higher at the peak of treadmill versus cycle testing (p ≤ 0.05). Nevertheless, work rate, minute ventilation, tidal volume (VT), breathing frequency (fR), inspiratory capacity (IC), inspiratory reserve volume (IRV), tidal esophageal (Pes,tidal) and transdiaphragm

Reorganisation of the right occipito-parietal stream for auditory spatial processing in early blind humans. A transcranial magnetic stimulation study.

It is well known that, following an early visual deprivation, the neural network involved in processing auditory spatial information undergoes a profound reorganization. In particular, several studies have demonstrated an extensive activation of occipital brain areas, usually regarded as essentially "visual", when early blind subjects (EB) performed a task that requires spatial processing of sounds. However, little is known about the possible consequences of the activation of occipitals area on the function of the large cortical network known, in sighted subjects, to be involved in the process

Assessing spatial perception of learners during holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP).

BACKGROUND: Holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP) has a steep learning curve. Specific educational efforts to improve HoLEP training has not been extensively studied. The aim of this study was to assess the spatial perception of urology residents (learners) HoLEP videos to improve future educational efforts. METHODS: A cross-sectional simulation-based observational study during an academic urology conference was performed. A HoLEP recording was shown to resident physicians and paused at 5 time points. Resident physicians were then asked to mark down coordinates on diagrams of pros

Real-time Robust Semantic Segmentation via Low-Resolution Ensemble.

Semantic segmentation algorithms constitute a critical component for vision-based perception in robotics and autonomous driving. Real-world deployment in uncertain environments requires such algorithms to be both low-latency and robust against common corruptions. However, the limited representation ability of real-time models and the high computational overhead of existing robust models render real-time robust semantic segmentation particularly challenging. In this paper, we begin by systematically evaluating the robustness of existing real-time models and observe that inference on down-sample

Dynamics of PTSD and autonomic symptoms in a longitudinal U.S. population-based sample.

OBJECTIVE: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms can co-occur with somatic symptoms, associations which may be partly due to threat-responsive changes in the autonomic nervous system. Prior studies support between-person associations of elevated autonomic symptoms with higher PTSD severity. However, there is a need to distinguish between- and within-person variation in symptoms over time. METHOD: This study used a latent growth model with structured residuals to examine the dynamics of PTSD and autonomic symptoms in a U.S. population-based sample. Participants were 475 adults with an

Head pose-assisted localization of facial landmarks for enhanced fast registration in skull base surgery.

In skull base surgery, the method of using a probe to draw or 3D scanners to acquire intraoperative facial point clouds for spatial registration presents several issues. Manual manipulation results in inefficiency and poor consistency. Traditional registration algorithms based on point clouds are highly dependent on the initial pose. The complexity of registration algorithms can also extend the required time. To address these issues, we used an RGB-D camera to capture real-time facial point clouds during surgery. The initial registration of the 3D model reconstructed from preoperative CT/MR im

Autologous Platelet-Rich Plasma in Clitoral Reconstructive Surgery After Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting: A Pilot Case Study.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative healing after clitoral reconstruction (CR) for female genital mutilation/cutting can be long and painful due to prolonged clitoral re-epithelialization time (up to 3 months). Autologous platelet-rich plasma (A-PRP) might reduce postoperative clitoral epithelialization time and pain. OBJECTIVES: The authors assessed postoperative clitoral re-epithelialization time and pain after intraoperative clitoral administration of A-PRP. METHODS: Five consecutive women underwent CR (Foldès technique) followed by the administration of A-PRP Regen Lab SA (Le Mont-sur-Lausanne, Sw

Visual processing deficits in 22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome.

Carriers of the rare 22q11.2 microdeletion present with a high percentage of positive and negative symptoms and a high genetic risk for schizophrenia. Visual processing impairments have been characterized in schizophrenia, but less so in 22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome (DS). Here, we focus on visual processing using high-density EEG and source imaging in 22q11.2DS participants (N = 25) and healthy controls (N = 26) with an illusory contour discrimination task. Significant differences between groups emerged at early and late stages of visual processing. In 22q11.2DS, we first observed reduced amplitu

Multichannel recordings of the human brainstem frequency-following response: scalp topography, source generators, and distinctions from the transient ABR.

Brainstem frequency-following responses (FFRs) probe the neural transcription of speech/music, auditory disorders, and plasticity in subcortical auditory function. Despite clinical and empirical interest, the response's neural basis remains poorly understood. The current study aimed to more fully characterize functional properties of the human FFR (topography, source locations, generation). Speech-evoked FFRs were recorded using a high-density (64 channel) electrode montage. Source dipole modeling and 3-channel Lissajous analysis was used to localize the most likely FFR generators and their or
