Leptospirosis is a major problem of dairy farms in Tamilnadu, India, resulting in abortions, stillbirths and infertility. Serologic and genetic analyses of samples from cattle, humans and rodents were performed in order to estimate infection prevalence and identify leptospiral species. BACKGROUND: Cryptococcal meningitis is a rare but well-recognized illness with a high mortality rate in immunosuppressed patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). The diagnosis of cryptococcal meningitis in these patients can be challenging, especially in the emergency department (ED), as the clinical presentation may be non-specific, which can lead to delayed treatment.

BACKGROUND: Epidemic leptospirosis is increasingly being reported from northern Kerala during the monsoon months. We investigated the risk factors for mortality during the 2002 epidemic.
METHODS: Three hundred and forty patients suspected to have leptospirosis during the epidemic were studied by clinical examination, laboratory investigations and Leptospira serology (microscopic agglutination test). BACKGROUND: Cryptococcosis is more frequently observed since the appearance of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). AIDS has modified the clinical and evolutive forms of the disease. This study reviews the changes produced in the infection from the context of AIDS.
