The burden of occupational injury: a 1-year prospective study in Xuan Tien Commune, Viet Nam.

BACKGROUND: Developing nations carry a substantial portion of the global burden of injury, but without reliable injury surveillance, there is no way to characterize or prioritize the causes of work-related injury for prevention. Future aspects of therapy for hepatitis B virus infection: value of surrogate markers, innovative therapy, and global collaboration.

Both optimism and frustration exist regarding therapy for patients with chronic hepatitis B virus infection. Due to the recent advent of several drugs with potent antiviral capacities and comparatively low rates of adverse effects, considerable optimism has developed regarding the treatment of these patients. Chronic hepatitis B is now a treatable disease, and suppression of hepatitis B virus replication, normalization of alanine aminotransferase levels, seronegativity/seroconversion of hepatitis B e antigen and hepatitis B surface antigen, and decreased hepatic inflammation and liver fibrosis

Mapping, monitoring, and surveillance of neglected tropical diseases: towards a policy framework.

As national programmes respond to the new opportunities presented for scaling up preventive chemotherapy programmes for the coadministration of drugs to target lymphatic filariasis, onchocerciasis, schistosomiasis, soil-transmitted helminthiasis, and trachoma, possible synergies between existing disease-specific policies and protocols need to be examined. In this report we compare present policies for mapping, monitoring, and surveillance for these diseases, drawing attention to both the challenges and opportunities for integration. Although full integration of all elements of mapping, monitor

Neonatal resuscitation in low-resource settings: what, who, and how to overcome challenges to scale up?

BACKGROUND: Each year approximately 10 million babies do not breathe immediately at birth, of which about 6 million require basic neonatal resuscitation. The major burden is in low-income settings, where health system capacity to provide neonatal resuscitation is inadequate. OBJECTIVE: To systematically review the evidence for neonatal resuscitation content, training and competency, equipment and supplies, cost, and key program considerations, specifically for resource-constrained settings. RESULTS: Evidence from several observational studies shows that facility-based basic neonatal resuscit

Rabies trend in China (1990-2007) and post-exposure prophylaxis in the Guangdong province.

BACKGROUND: Rabies is a major public-health problem in developing countries such as China. Although the recent re-emergence of human rabies in China was noted in several epidemiological studies, little attention was paid to the reasons behind this phenomenon paralleling the findings of the previous reports. The purpose of this study is thus first to characterize the current trends of human rabies in China from 1990 to 2007, and then to define better recommendations for improving the post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) schedules delivered to rabies patients. METHODS: The most updated epidemiologic…
