Spatial and seasonal analyses of tick prevalence in livestock across selected districts of Balochistan, Pakistan.

Ticks are ectoparasites that feed on the blood of domestic animals, resulting in significant reductions in weight, milk production, and hide quality. They are also vectors of a variety of pathogens that cause disease in animals. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and species distribution of ticks among domestic animals (cattle, goats, sheep, buffaloes, and camels) across 12 districts of Baluchistan. A total of 759 domestic animals were carefully examined, and ticks were collected using hand and forceps. The collected samples were meticulously preserved in 70 % ethanol and appropria

[Importance of National Influenza Centers in the surveillance of highly pathogenic avian viruses. The time for One-Health is now].

Since 1996, the highly pathogenic avian influenza subtype A(H5N1) has been causing almost uninterrupted outbreaks in wild and domestic birds, as well as cases in humans with a mortality rate close to 50%. However, the years of greatest circulation have been precisely the years following the COVID-19 pandemic, in which several cases have been recorded in humans in places where they had never appeared before, in addition to multiple cases in wild, domestic and peri-domestic mammals, which raise some concern about the risk that the virus may jump to humans through chains of transmission of greate

Molecular survey of feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) infection in Namibian cats.

Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) is one of the most important infectious diseases of cats, with potential implications in wildlife conservation. Unfortunately, FIV screening and surveillance in domestic cats remains limited in several African countries, including Namibia. In this study, 279 blood samples from domestic cats in Namibia were analyzed for FIV diagnosis by PCR. The cats represented various regions and were cared for by people largely from rural areas with limited financial means. Only 1.43 % of the samples tested positive, unexpectedly low given their outdoor lifestyles. The inf

First report of T. spiralis in a wolf in Italy: An increasing health concern?

Trichinella spiralis is a zoonotic nematode parasite of worldwide distribution. It is present in Europe with important foci, particularly in Eastern countries and Spain. This species is generally associated with a domestic cycle that involves primarily pigs. It is best adapted for pigs but can also infect a wide range of other domestic, synanthropic, and wild mammals including carnivores, omnivores and scavengers. Before 2016, when T. spiralis larvae were detected in a red fox (Vulpes vulpes) in the Piacenza province (Emilia Romagna region, Northern Italy), this parasite had only been reported

A multicenter retrospective comparison between systemic mastocytosis with t(8;21) AML and KIT mutant t(8;21) AML.

Pathogens of domestic dogs have been reported in various carnivorans worldwide. Canine distemper virus (CDV) has been responsible for lethal outbreaks and population declines. Data are scarce regarding CDV outbreaks and their impact on South American canids. An eco-epidemiological investigation of a disease outbreak in a free-living population of Pampas foxes (Lycalopex gymnocercus) in a protected area (reserve) in southern Brazil began after locals informed our team of three foxes in the reserve showing signs of incoordination and seizures. Two carcasses of recently dead foxes were recovered

Population structure and hybridisation in a population of Hawaiian feral chickens.

Chickens are believed to have inhabited the Hawaiian island of Kauai since the first human migrations around 1200AD, but numbers have peaked since the tropical storms Iniki and Iwa in the 1980s and 1990s that destroyed almost all the chicken coops on the island and released large numbers of domestic chickens into the wild. Previous studies have shown these now feral chickens are an admixed population between Red Junglefowl (RJF) and domestic chickens. Here, using genetic haplotypic data, we estimate the time of the admixture event between the feral population on the island and the RJF to 1981

Correlations between China's socioeconomic status, disease burdens, and pharmaceuticals and personal care product levels in wastewater.

The presence of pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) in domestic wastewater can potentially indicate socioeconomic status and disease burdens. However, current knowledge is limited to the correlation between specific pharmaceuticals and diseases. This study aims to explore the associations between socioeconomic status, disease burdens, and PPCP levels in domestic wastewater at a national level. Samples from 171 wastewater influents across China were used to measure PPCPs, and the per capita consumption of PPCPs was calculated. Results showed that the 31 targeted PPCPs were widely

Babesiosis and Theileriosis in North America.

Babesia and Theileria are apicomplexan parasites that cause established and emerging diseases in humans, domestic and wild animals. These protozoans are transmitted by Ixodid ticks causing babesiosis or theileriosis, both characterized by fever, hemolytic anemia, jaundice, and splenomegaly. In North America (NA), the most common species affecting humans is B. microti, which is distributed in the Northeastern and Upper Midwestern United States (US), where the tick vector Ixodes scapularis is established. In livestock, B. bovis and B. bigemina are the most important pathogens causing bovine babe

"Crisis Within the Walls": Rise of Intimate Partner Violence During the Pandemic, Indian Perspectives.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

The ongoing coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic has been a social "un-equalizer," besides being a global health threat. Gender inequality has been globally prominent during the outbreak and the consequent lockdown. Although domestic abuse and intimate partner violence have increased due to chronic entrapment, overcrowding in families, enhanced substance use, distorted relationship dynamics, travel restrictions, and reduced healthcare access, coercive sexual practices have also been on the rise. In low- and middle-income countries, the lack of awareness, societal pressure, administrative apathy,

Avian Influenza in Wild Birds and Poultry: Dissemination Pathways, Monitoring Methods, and Virus Ecology.

Avian influenza is one of the largest known threats to domestic poultry. Influenza outbreaks on poultry farms typically lead to the complete slaughter of the entire domestic bird population, causing severe economic losses worldwide. Moreover, there are highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) strains that are able to infect the swine or human population in addition to their primary avian host and, as such, have the potential of being a global zoonotic and pandemic threat. Migratory birds, especially waterfowl, are a natural reservoir of the avian influenza virus; they carry and exchange differ

Anthropogenic Infection of Cats during the 2020 COVID-19 Pandemic.

COVID-19 is a severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) caused by a new coronavirus (CoV), SARS-CoV-2, which is closely related to SARS-CoV that jumped the animal-human species barrier and caused a disease outbreak in 2003. SARS-CoV-2 is a betacoronavirus that was first described in 2019, unrelated to the commonly occurring feline coronavirus (FCoV) that is an alphacoronavirus associated with feline infectious peritonitis (FIP). SARS-CoV-2 is highly contagious and has spread globally within a few months, resulting in the current pandemic. Felids have been shown to be susceptible to SARS-CoV-2 i

Persian onager (Equus hemionus onager) endometrial explant cryopreservation and in vitro culture.

Assisted reproduction of endangered equids, such as Persian onagers (Equus hemionus onager), is vital for species conservation. Little is known about Persian onager reproductive functions, including functions of the uterine endometrium. Recently, successful cryopreservation of the domestic mare endometrium was reported, but there is no information on cryo-sensitivity or in vitro culture of endometrial tissues of any non-domestic equid. In the present study, endometrial explants from Persian onagers were cryopreserved and cultured in vitro for 5 days. There was no difference between endometrial

Genetic evolution analysis of novel recombinant pseudorabies virus strain in Sichuan, China.

Pseudorabies is a disease that seriously endangers the pig industry in China. Recently, we successfully isolated a pseudorabies virus from the brain tissue of piglets at a farm in Sichuan, China, and named it the FJ62 strain. In order to understand the molecular biological characteristics of the strain, primers were designed for glycoproteins gB, gC, gD and gE, which were amplified by a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and sequenced. After comparing the sequence with the GenBank 22 pseudorabies virus reference strains and establishing the genetic evolutionary tree, it was found that the gB gene

Serological and Molecular Investigation on Toxoplasma gondii Infection in Wild Birds.

Toxoplasma gondii is an obligate apicomplexan zoonotic parasite that infects humans and other animals and is responsible for toxoplasmosis. This parasite causes one of the most common parasitic infections in humans worldwide. Toxoplasmosis meets the requirements for a One Health Disease due to its ability to affect the health of human beings as well as domestic and free ranging animals. Integrating human, domestic animal, and wildlife data could better assess the risk and devise methods of control. A first step of such an approach would be the knowledge of the prevalence of parasitosis in huma

The subgingival microbial community of feline periodontitis and gingivostomatitis: characterization and comparison between diseased and healthy cats.

Periodontitis is a common and important health problem in domestic cats. The subgingival microbiota of cats diagnosed with chronic periodontitis (CP), aggressive periodontitis (AP), and feline chronic gingivostomatitis (FCGS) are not well characterized. Thus, the aim of the present study was to characterize and compare the periodontal microbiota of periodontally healthy cats versus cats diagnosed with CP, AP, and FCGS by using next-generation sequencing. In total, 44 domestic cats were enrolled, and 139 subgingival samples were subjected to 16S rRNA gene sequencing to investigate the microbiot

Echinococcus Granulosus in the Endangered Patagonian Huemul (Hippocamelus bisulcus).

Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a zoonotic parasitic disease associated with Echinococcus granulosus. The parasite is maintained by domestic and wild canids as definitive hosts with several ungulate species as intermediate hosts in domestic and peridomestic transmission cycles. In Chile, CE is endemic, and the role of livestock and dogs (Canis lupus familiaris) in the cycle and the accidental infection of humans are widely documented at rural sites. However, the role of wild herbivores in wild cycles or the potential transmission of CE from livestock is still unknown in Chile and the rest of Sou
