Time trends (1980-1987) of ten selected informative morphogenetic variants in a newborn population.

The annual prevalence rates of ten selected informative morphogenetic variants (IMVs) were studied in 31,194 newborn infants over a period of 8 years (1980-1987). Two of them (preauricular sinus and ocular hypertelorism) revealed a highly significant decrease by logistic regression analysis. The other eight presented a stable pattern or small fluctuations which did not reach statistical significance. These data may serve as valuable baseline rates for monitoring IMVs in a specific newborn population. Their potential informative value as indicators of altered morphogenesis and their power for m

Psychologists and children of alcoholic parents.

Clinical evidence has pictured children of alcoholic parents as vulnerable physically, emotionally, socially, academically, and at risk for alcoholism. Review of research indicated that some of these clinical insights have been validated, but much more is needed to fill out an accurate picture for psychologists who will be asked to work with them.

The development of asymmetry: the sidedness of drug-induced limb abnormalities is reversed in situs inversus mice.

We are studying the development of handedness, in particular the relationships between handed structures with bilateral symmetry, for example the limbs, and those with lateral asymmetry, such as the heart, lungs and gut. Asymmetric (unilateral) developmental limb abnormalities can be induced by chemical treatment of mouse embryos, either in utero by acetazolamide, or in culture by misonidazole. We have examined these effects in mice homozygous for the iv gene. The development of bilateral symmetry in iv/iv mice is normal, but the control of asymmetry appears to be random, that is 50% develop n

Pena-Shokeir phenotype in sibs with macrocephaly but without growth retardation.

A number of more or less distinct subgroups with the Pena-Shokeir phenotype have been identified. We studied two brothers with the Pena-Shokeir phenotype who were unusual because they had macrocephaly and normal growth. In the second sib, no neuromuscular abnormalities were found at autopsy. Among the subgroups with Pena-Shokeir phenotype, these sibs resemble the family reported by Ohlsson et al. [1988] more than the other subgroups that have been proposed. In addition, abnormalities were detected by prenatal ultrasonography during the 18th week of gestation of the second fetus. This finding p

Disparity of amniotic fluid volume and fetal size: problem of the stuck twin--US studies.

The "stuck twin" phenomenon in monochorionic diamniotic (MCDA) pregnancies is characterized by marked disparity in both fluid volume and fetal size between the twin gestations. To determine the prevalence, sonographic characteristics, and clinical outcome of this phenomenon, discharge summaries, placental pathologic reports, and prenatal sonograms from 307 twin pregnancies were reviewed. Of 52 cases of MCDA pregnancies, 18 (35%) demonstrated marked disparity in amniotic fluid volume. In 16 of these 18 cases there was discordant twin growth, further suggesting the diagnosis of twin transfusion

Fetal alcohol. Teratogenic causes of developmental disabilities.

Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) and Fetal Alcohol Effects (FAE) are preventable forms of mental retardation and developmental disability caused by heavy prenatal alcohol exposure. Our best evidence of the overall prevalence of FAS is around 1 in 750 live births, but this figure will vary according to the drinking habits of the community and the diagnostic skills and interests of local physicians. It is likely that many infants are born with FAS or FAE, are never recognized as such, and are never properly diagnosed or evaluated. Other diagnoses that are sometimes confused with FAS include Noonan s

Ultrastructure and localization of substance P and met-enkephalin immunoreactivity in the human fetal gastric antrum.

The ultrastructural localization and relations of substance P- and met-enkephalin-labeled neuronal structures were examined in the wall of the human gastric antrum during early fetal life. By 14-16 weeks of gestation, clearly discernable neural plexuses and a well developed external muscle coat were present. In the submucous coat, neural plexuses varied from immature forms consisting of 1-4 neurites partially enveloped by Schwann cell processes to more mature plexuses where neurons were completely enclosed by Schwann cell processes. Neuronal profiles with substance P- and met-enkephalin-like i

Teratogenic effects of lithium and ethanol in the developing fetus.

Prolonged administration of either lithium (7 mg/kg body wt.) or ethanol (30% of daily caloric intake) for 10 days to pregnant rats results in several anatomical abnormalities in the fetus. Intragastric administration of lithium carbonate to pregnant rats immediately after confirmation of pregnancy resulted in high incidence of cleft palate, growth retardation, brain liquification and pulpy brain, hepatomegaly and digital abnormalities, when compared to the saline-treated controls. Furthermore, lithium administration during gestation also resulted in other less frequently observed abnormalitie

The relationship between gestational age and birth-weight in twin pregnancy.

Analysis is made of fetal growth in 563 twin pregnancies. The birth-weight of a twin is affected by the duration of pregnancy and zygosity. Intrauterine growth and weight is the same as a singleton pregnancy up to a gestational age of 32 weeks. After this stage fetal growth slows markedly. The growth curves of both twins are similar with an increasing tendency towards growth retardation in twin 2 after 39 weeks' gestation. Intrauterine growth retardation, as represented by the 10th percentile line, for twin 1 joins 1,094g at 31 weeks, 1,836g at 36 weeks and 2,428g at 40 weeks' gestation. The c

[Embryotoxic effect of ethanol and its biotransformation products in cultures of postimplantation rat embryos].

A study was made of the effect of ethanol (6.5-108 mM) and its immediate metabolite, acetaldehyde (4.5 microM-45 mM) on 9.5-day-old rat embryos cultivated in vitro. Biotransformation of the nontoxic concentration of ethanol (17 mM) to teratogenic products was made by addition to the culture medium of a soluble fraction of the rat liver (0.2-0.55 mg protein/ml), NAD (0.25 mM) and sodium pyruvate (2.3 mM). Malformations obtained after biotransformation of ethanol were similar to those obtained after direct action of acetaldehyde. The roles of acetaldehyde and ethanol in the etiology of fetal alc

Maternal-fetal interface organoids: a new era in pregnancy research.

The maternal-fetal interface is the core site of pregnancy occurrence and maintenance. Its complex physiological and pathological processes have long been concentrated in two-dimensional cell models and animal models. Organoids represent a novel in vitro three-dimensional model that offers a powerful platform for elucidating the complexities of human pregnancy, investigating pregnancy-related diseases, and developing novel treatment strategies. Organoids primarily employ pluripotent stem cells or tissue-derived progenitor cells to generate miniature "organs" that emulate the configuration of p

Maternal Vitamin D3 Supplementation in an Oxidized-Oil Diet Protects Fetus from Developmental Impairment and Ameliorates Oxidative Stress in Mouse Placenta and Fetus.

BACKGROUND: Fried food has increased in popularity worldwide. However, deep frying can increase the production of peroxidative toxins in food, which might be harmful to fetal development. The antioxidative effect of vitamin D3 (VD3) has been reported previously. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to explore how maternal VD3 supplementation in an oxidized-oil diet during gestation affects fetal antioxidative ability and development. METHODS: Pregnant mice were randomly assigned into 3 groups: Control group (diet with fresh soybean oil), OSO group [diet with oxidized soybean oil (OSO)], and OSOV gro…

Prenatal ultrasound detection of fetal amniotic band ingestion in monochorionic diamniotic twin pregnancy: a rare case report.

BACKGROUND: Amniotic Band Syndrome (ABS) is a rare congenital condition characterized by the formation of fibrous bands within the amniotic sac that can entangle and restrict fetal development, leading to various deformities. In this report, we present an unprecedented case of fetal amniotic band ingestion in a monochorionic diamniotic (MCDA) twin pregnancy. Reporting this case is essential for expanding the understanding of the diverse presentations of amniotic bands, considering this rare entity in the differential diagnosis of prenatal ultrasound findings, and emphasizing the importance of …

Comparison of Developmental Dynamics in Human Fetal Retina and Human Pluripotent Stem Cell-Derived Retinal Tissue.

Progressive vision loss, caused by retinal degenerative (RD) diseases such as age-related macular degeneration, retinitis pigmentosa, and Leber congenital amaurosis, severely impacts quality of life and affects millions of people. Finding efficient treatment for blinding diseases is among the greatest unmet clinical needs. The evagination of optic vesicles from developing pluripotent stem cell-derived neuroepithelium and self-organization, lamination, and differentiation of retinal tissue in a dish generated considerable optimism for developing innovative approaches for treating RD diseases, w
