Imaging based flowchart for gallbladder polyp evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Preoperative differentiation between neoplastic and nonneoplastic gallbladder polyps, and the subsequent indication for cholecystectomy remains a clinical dilemma. The current 1 cm size threshold for neoplasia is unspecific. The aim of this study was to improve diagnostic work-up for gallbladder polyps using sonographic and MRI characteristics of neoplastic and nonneoplastic polyps. METHODS: A prospective, exploratory study including patients undergoing cholecystectomy for gallbladder polyp(s) was conducted. Patients underwent targeted transabdominal ultrasound (TAUS) and MRI. Out

Novel Diffusion-Weighted Imaging Score Showed Good Prognostic Value for Acute Basilar Artery Occlusion Following Endovascular Treatment: The Pons-Midbrain and Thalamus Score.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Prognostic factors for outcome of endovascular treatment remains to be investigated in patients with acute basilar artery occlusion. We aimed to assess the prognostic value of a novel pretreatment diffusion-weighted imaging score: The Pons-Midbrain and Thalamus (PMT) score. METHODS: Eligible patients who underwent endovascular treatment due to acute basilar artery occlusion were reviewed. The PMT score was a diffusion-weighted imaging-based semiquantitative scale in which the infarctions of pons, midbrain, and thalamus were fully considered. The PMT score was assessed

Diffusion-Tensor Imaging of Uterine Cervical Carcinoma: Correlation With Histopathologic Findings.

The authors investigated the usefulness of diffusion-tensor imaging (DTI) for evaluating tumor invasion depth, histologic grade, and lymph node metastasis in patients with cervical carcinoma (CC). Fifteen consecutive patients with histologically confirmed CC underwent 1.5-T magnetic resonance imaging and DTI. The CCs were clearly depicted as hypointense areas on all DTI maps. Fractional anisotropy, mean diffusivity, and axial diffusivity showed significantly inverse correlations with CC histologic grades and were significantly different between metastatic and nonmetastatic lymph nodes.

Serial MRI studies over 12 months using manual and atlas-based region of interest in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a neurodegenerative disease characterized by loss of upper and lower motor neurons. There is a need for an imaging biomarker to track disease progression. Previously, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has shown loss of grey and white matter in the brain of patients with ALS compared to controls. We performed serial diffusion tractography imaging (DTI) study of patients with ALS looking for changes over time. METHODS: On all subjects (n = 15), we performed three MRI studies at 6 month intervals. DTI changes were assessed with tract-based spatia

Determinants of myocardial function characterized by CMR-derived strain parameters in left ventricular non-compaction cardiomyopathy.

Clinical presentation of left ventricular non-compaction cardiomyopathy (LVNC) can be heterogeneous from asymptomatic expression to congestive heart failure. Deformation indices assessed by cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) can determine subclinical alterations of myocardial function and have been reported to be more sensitive to functional changes than ejection fraction. The objective of the present study was to investigate the determinants of myocardial deformation indices in patients with LVNC. Twenty patients with LVNC (44.7 ± 14.0 years) and twenty age- and gender-matched controls (

Coloring Technique of Magnetic Resonance Angiography for Superficial Temporal Artery to Middle Cerebral Artery Bypass Surgery.

OBJECTIVE: Superficial temporal artery (STA)-to-middle cerebral artery (MCA) bypass is an established surgical technique for achieving revascularization. It is important to select the proper recipient artery of the MCA. Three-dimensional computed tomographic angiography (3D-CTA) and conventional angiography are useful in the selection process but need contrast agents. The authors have designed a coloring MRA technique that needs no agents to visualize the recipient artery. Retrospective evaluation of the efficacy and limitation for selection of the recipient artery and decision of the place an

Quantitative susceptibility mapping differentiates between parkinsonian disorders.

INTRODUCTION: It is often challenging to clinically distinguish between Parkinson's disease (PD), multiple system atrophy (MSA) and progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP). Quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM) is an accurate indirect method for estimating brain iron levels in vivo. This method has yet to be applied in atypical parkinsonism. We aimed to investigate differences in brain iron accumulation parkinsonian disorders and healthy controls using QSM. METHODS: 15 patients with PSP, 11 patients with MSA, 62 patients with PD and 14 healthy controls were included in the study and their ph

Random forest feature selection, fusion and ensemble strategy: Combining multiple morphological MRI measures to discriminate among healhy elderly, MCI, cMCI and alzheimer's disease patients: From the alzheimer's disease neuroimaging initiative (ADNI) database.

BACKGROUND: In the era of computer-assisted diagnostic tools for various brain diseases, Alzheimer's disease (AD) covers a large percentage of neuroimaging research, with the main scope being its use in daily practice. However, there has been no study attempting to simultaneously discriminate among Healthy Controls (HC), early mild cognitive impairment (MCI), late MCI (cMCI) and stable AD, using features derived from a single modality, namely MRI. NEW METHOD: Based on preprocessed MRI images from the organizers of a neuroimaging challenge,3 we attempted to quantify the prediction accuracy of

Brain positron emission tomography with 2-18F-2-deoxi-D-glucose of patients with dystonia and essential tremor detects differences between these disorders.

We studied patients with dystonia (D) and essential tremor (ET) using positron emission tomography (PET) equipped with Cortex ID software. This allowed PET brain visualisation to be compared to scans of a control group by means of the z-score. The study revealed hypo-metabolism in both D and ET groups, and additionally revealed a difference between these two groups of patients in certain areas of the brain. These two nosological forms overlap in clinical features and are difficult to differentiate. The PET picture may help to provide a differential diagnosis in addition to the biochemical diff

Magnetic Resonance Imaging of the Atherosclerotic Mouse Aorta.

Plaque development has been extensively studied using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in animal models of rapidly progressing atherosclerosis, such as apolipoprotein E-knockout (apoE-KO) mice. Preclinical MRI plays a significant role in the study of experimental atherosclerosis. Currently, MRI is capable of detecting luminal narrowing, plaque size, and morphology with high accuracy and reproducibility, providing reliable measurements of plaque burden. Therefore, MRI offers a noninvasive approach to serially monitor the progression of the disease. Compared with other imaging modalities, MRI ap

Automated Peripheral Neuropathy Assessment Using Optical Imaging and Foot Anthropometry.

A large proportion of individuals who live with type-2 diabetes suffer from plantar sensory neuropathy. Regular testing and assessment for the condition is required to avoid ulceration or other damage to patient's feet. Currently accepted practice involves a trained clinician testing a patient's feet manually with a hand-held nylon monofilament probe. The procedure is time consuming, labor intensive, requires special training, is prone to error, and repeatability is difficult. With the vast increase in type-2 diabetes, the number of plantar sensory neuropathy sufferers has already grown to suc
