[Epidemiology, treatment and prevention of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder: a review].

Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is characterized by inattentiveness and/or impulsiveness and hyperactivity, which are unsuited for the developmental stage or age. Although mechanisms leading to the onset of the disease are unclear, this condition seriously hinders childrens' social or learning functions, and recently it was selected as a target disease for a special supporting education program by the Minitry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, together with learning disorders and high-functioning pervasive developmental disorders in Japan. In spite of the in

Chiropractic management of cow's milk protein intolerance in infants with sleep dysfunction syndrome: a therapeutic trial.

OBJECTIVE: In addition to the more usual cutaneous, gastrointestinal, and respiratory problems, infants with cow's milk intolerance (CMI) may present with a disturbed sleep pattern. Frustrated mothers may turn to their doctor of chiropractic for assistance. This pilot study shows how a therapeutic trial may offer a realistic, noninvasive approach to the chiropractic management of infants with this clinical problem. METHODS: A pilot study to describe the presentation and treatment of infants presenting with disturbed sleep patterns to a chiropractic clinic was undertaken. Infants fulfilling a

Adults with ADHD. An overview.

Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a common, genetically transmitted neurological disorder, with onset in childhood, probably mediated by decreased brain dopaminergic functioning. The first author was one of the earliest to describe the persistence of symptoms into adulthood. Prevalence and natural history data suggest that of the 3 to 10% of children diagnosed with ADHD, one- to two-thirds (somewhere between 1 and 6% of the general population) continue to manifest appreciable ADHD symptoms into adult life. This paper describes how ADHD in adults can be readily diagnosed and tr

Intervention and prevention of steroid use in adolescents.

Athletes with a higher intent to use anabolic steroids were similar to students who indicated no predisposition to use steroids on economic, academic, and physical measures. They had similar understandings of anabolic steroid effects, and their self-rated understandings of how to weight train and of sports nutrition were similar. In addition, the influence of the coaches and the media and the perceived prevalence of anabolic steroid use were not different between the higher- and lower-intent students. These results demonstrated several significant differences. Higher-intent students had higher

Prevalence and Interpersonal Correlates of Internet Gaming Disorders among Chinese Adolescents.

This study investigated the prevalence and interpersonal correlates of Internet gaming disorders (IGD) among Chinese adolescents. A cross-sectional survey was conducted in two cities (Shanghai and Xi'an) in China. A total of 2666 (Meanage = 12.77 ± 0.75) year-one students from eight middle schools completed a self-reported questionnaire. It tested their levels of IGD, parental psychological control, negative interpersonal events (physical/verbal abuse by parents, verbal abuse by teachers, peer/online bullying), social support from parents/peers, and positive relationships with parents/peers. Association between motor timing and treatment outcomes in patients with alcohol and/or cocaine use disorder in a rehabilitation program.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with Substance Use Disorders (SUDs) have disruptions in the brain's dopaminergic (DA) system and the functioning of its target neural substrates (striatum and prefrontal cortex). These substrates are important for the normal processing of reward, inhibitory control and motivation. Cognitive deficits in attention, impulsivity and working memory have been found in individuals with SUDs and are predictors of poor SUD treatment outcomes and relapse in alcohol and cocaine dependence specifically. Furthermore, the DA system and accompanying neural substrates play a key role i

Biochemical correlates of neuropsychiatric illness in maple syrup urine disease.

Maple syrup urine disease (MSUD) is an inherited disorder of branched chain amino acid metabolism presenting with neonatal encephalopathy, episodic metabolic decompensation, and chronic amino acid imbalances. Dietary management enables survival and reduces risk of acute crises. Liver transplantation has emerged as an effective way to eliminate acute decompensation risk. Psychiatric illness is a reported MSUD complication, but has not been well characterized and remains poorly understood. We report the prevalence and characteristics of neuropsychiatric problems among 37 classical MSUD patients

Hippocampal agenesis in an individual who engaged in violent criminal behaviors after discontinuing carbamazepine and paroxetine treatment.

Antidepressant discontinuation syndrome (ADS) occurs after abrupt discontinuation of an antidepressant medication. A 23-year-old man with right hippocampal agenesis demonstrated sexual crime (hypersexuality) since the age of eight and had been successfully treated with carbamazepine since the age of 13. He had required increased doses of paroxetine and carbamazepine owing to the development of an unstable affect after quitting his job. He abruptly stopped taking his medication for 3 days and his criminal behaviors re-emerged. We examined changes in brain structure and activity before and after

Child and adolescent predictors of male intimate partner violence.

BACKGROUND: This study addresses to what extent child and adolescent explanatory factors predict male perpetrated intimate partner violence (IPV) in adulthood. METHODS: We use prospective longitudinal data from the Cambridge Study in Delinquent Development (CSDD). The CSDD is a survey of 411 male born in the 1950s in an inner London area. The men were interviewed over a period of 40 years with information also gathered from their parents, peers and teachers and later from their female partners. RESULTS: Family factors such as having a criminal father, a disrupted family, poor supervision and

Psychopathology and lymphocyte subsets in patients with bulimia nervosa.

The association between lymphocyte subsets and several psychopathological variables which had proved to be able to affect immune cell count in other conditions was investigated in bulimia nervosa patients. Sixty-seven female bulimia nervosa patients and 29 female healthy controls were assessed for nutritional status (weight, blood cells, lymphocyte subsets, biochemical parameters and hormones) and psychopathology (anxiety, depression, hostility, impulsivity and borderline personality traits). A negative correlation between impulsivity and helper T-cells (CD4(+)) was found in controls. In the b

Personality and metabolic syndrome.

The prevalence of metabolic syndrome has paralleled the sharp increase in obesity. Given its tremendous physical, emotional, and financial burden, it is of critical importance to identify who is most at risk and the potential points of intervention. Psychological traits, in addition to physiological and social risk factors, may contribute to metabolic syndrome. The objective of the present research is to test whether personality traits are associated with metabolic syndrome in a large community sample. Participants (N = 5,662) from Sardinia, Italy, completed a comprehensive personality questio

Switching to the bingeing/purging subtype of anorexia nervosa is frequently associated with suicidal attempts.

OBJECTIVE: Anorexia nervosa has the highest suicide mortality ratio of psychiatric disorders, suicide being associated with many factors. We assessed the first lifetime occurrence of these factors taking into account their possible overlap. METHOD: Three hundred and four in- and out-patients with anorexia nervosa (DSM-IV) were systematically recruited in three hospitals of Paris suburbs, between December 1999 and January 2003. Patients were assessed by a face-to-face interview (DIGS). Current eating disorder dimensions were measured, and patients interviewed by a trained clinician to assess m

Open-label study of atypical neuroleptic quetiapine for treatment of borderline personality disorder: impulsivity as main target.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies indicate that atypical neuroleptics may be safe and useful in treating many symptoms of borderline personality disorder (BPD), including impulsivity, which can constitute the core dimension of this pathology. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of quetiapine in patients with well-defined BPD. It was hypothesized that quetiapine would reduce impulsivity (primary hypothesis) and also affective and micropsychotic symptoms, resulting in improved social and global functioning (secondary hypothesis). METHOD: Twenty-three outpatients with BPD according to

Recognizing and treating uncommon behavioral and emotional disorders in children and adolescents who have been severely maltreated: dissociative disorders.

Children who have experienced severe maltreatment may use dissociation as a strategy to cope with the ongoing trauma of their maltreatment. Although dissociation may help children cope with maltreatment, it can become maladaptive if it is used in other contexts. This article explores the symptoms of dissociate disorders and the ways that maladaptive dissociation can develop in maltreated children. Strategies for distinguishing dissociative disorders from other disorders in children are reviewed and treatment strategies for children and adolescents with maladaptive dissociation, and their famil

[Intrafamilial disruptive behaviour disorders in children and adolescents: Present data and treatment prospects].

Child-to-parent violence is a form of family violence that is still a well-kept secret. Abused parents can be victims of different types of abuse. Children can use both physical and psychological violence such as financial threats to take control of the home. In this situation, parents often no longer dare to contradict their children by fear of triggering uncontrollable violence. Although the phenomenon recently drew the attention of the media, there is still little knowledge about its prevalence and clinical characteristics. Most families remain isolated for a long time and, even in case of

[About the use of seclusion in psychiatry: the patients' point of view].

In this study of psychiatric inpatients' perceptions of the seclusion-room experience, 67 admitted inpatients were interviewed during 6 Months within 3 days of the experience, and 24 hours after. A 35-items semistructured interview schedule was used to obtain information on six research questions. Subjects' perception of the reasons for their seclusions varied greatly from perceptions of staff members. Findings implied that for some patients seclusion may have been unnecessary, but for others it was beneficial. Subjects who reported out-of-control impulses or pathological intensity of relation

Genetic and personality interactions shape impulse control disorders in Parkinson's disease.

BackgroundIn Parkinson's disease (PD), predictive factors of Impulse Control Disorders (ICDs) remain insufficiently understood. Personality and polygenic risk scores (PRS) have both been independently associated with ICDs.ObjectivesOur objective was to study the interaction effects between personality dimensions and PRS on the odds of developing ICDs.MethodsThis case-control study included PD patients with and without ICDs (n = 250 patients). Personality was assessed using the Temperament and Character Inventory-Revised, and PRS were computed from genotyping data across 18 traits linked to psy

Listening to children with obesity: lived experiences of hunger, cravings, and satiety.

BACKGROUND: Appetite regulation is central to childhood obesity, yet little is known about how children themselves experience and interpret sensations of hunger, cravings, and satiety. This study aimed to explore how children living with overweight or obesity describe these sensations and how they respond to them in everyday life. METHODS: This qualitative study included 32 children (17 girls, 15 boys) aged 8-10 years who were interviewed four years after enrolling in a randomized controlled obesity treatment trial in Stockholm, Sweden. At follow-up (mean age 9.4 years, SD 0.8), the majority

High-frequency pseudo-hypofunction of the superior semicircular canal dehiscence syndrome: a vHIT - oVEMP dissociation explained by hydrodynamic energy loss.

BACKGROUND: Superior semicircular canal dehiscence syndrome (SCDS) produces a wide spectrum of vestibular and auditory abnormalities due to the presence of a "third mobile window." While enhanced otolith-mediated responses are well recognized, the behavior of high-frequency semicircular canal function remains debated. Many patients show reduced superior canal vestibulo-oculomotor reflex (VOR) gains despite preserved or exaggerated utricular responses. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between dynamic semicircular canal responses assessed by video Head Impulse Test (vHIT) and otolith
