To evaluate the transmission of onchocerciasis that had occurred in the past 6 years in the province of Esmeraldas, in 1986 the onchocercal focus was re-examined using the same methodology as in the original survey of 1980. An increased prevalence of infection of 73.9% was noted, with an increase of 73.0% found in the principal focus, the Santiago Basin, and a 76.7% increase in the satellite foci. The authors relate the results about 172 vaginal and cervical swabs, in women with or without oral/local (IUD) contraception, with or without vaginosis/vaginitis. Gardnerella vaginalis was always prevalent; the authors observed an high correlation between cervical IUD and vaginal Gardnerella, more than IUD and cervical Chlamydia trachomatis. Bacterial associations in Gardnerella vaginalis (Mobiluncus, obligate anaerobes) are related; incidence of Candida and Trichomonas vaginalis are reported; correlation between these microbial agents and contraception are discussed.

A reproducible electrophysiological technique is described to determine the latency of reflex contraction of the external anal sphincter in response to stimulation of the dorsal genital nerve: the pudendo-anal reflex. 334 patients were operated on for PHPT during the years 1956-79. A follow-up study of the material was performed during the years 1980-82 and it included 289 patients. The material was divided into single adenoma (SA) and multiglandular disease (MGD) cases. Mature rabbits were injected intra-muscularly into the hamstring (HS) muscles with doses of 1.66 mg Cu/kg/day, as cupric acetate, in aqueous solution. Similar doses of Na acetate were injected into control rabbits. Skeletal (HS) and cardiac (MYO) muscles were examined by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and a microanalyzer and energy dispersive X-ray (MEDX).
