Development and validation of a prediction model for respiratory complications and in-hospital mortality in trauma patients.

Respiratory complications are major contributors to morbidity and mortality in trauma patients, yet conventional predictive models remain limited in scope and performance. We developed and validated an ensemble machine learning model that integrates both prehospital and in-hospital clinical variables to predict respiratory complications in trauma patients. We developed and internally validated machine learning models using data from the Korea Trauma Data Bank, comprising records from 19 major trauma centers in Korea between 2017 and 2022 (discovery; n = 48,376). For external validation, data f

Machine learning model for predicting shear forces at the body-seat interface in wheelchair users: A novel approach.

Among the mechanical factors contributing to pressure injuries, shear forces at the body-seat interface play a critical role. This study introduces a novel machine learning approach to predict these forces, using data from pressure mapping systems and a multi-adjustable experimental seat. A supervised learning model was trained on measurements collected from individuals without disabilities and later evaluated on both this group and a cohort of wheelchair users. The selected model - a Random Forest Regression - relied on six input features: a calculated variable, backrest force, feet normal fo

DEEP LEARNING OF SEMI-COMPETING RISK DATA VIA A NEW NEURAL EXPECTATION-MAXIMIZATION ALGORITHM.

Prognostication for lung cancer, a leading cause of mortality, remains a complex task, as it needs to quantify the associations of risk factors and health events spanning a patient's entire life. One challenge is that an individual's disease course involves non-terminal (e.g., disease progression) and terminal (e.g., death) events, which form semi-competing relationships. Our motivation comes from the Boston Lung Cancer Study, a large lung cancer survival cohort, which investigates how risk factors influence a patient's disease trajectory. Following developments in the prediction of time-to-ev

A predictive model for postoperative adverse outcomes following surgical treatment of acute type A aortic dissection based on machine learning.

Acute type A aortic dissection (AAAD) has a high probability of postoperative adverse outcomes (PAO) after emergency surgery, so exploring the risk factors for PAO during hospitalization is key to reducing postoperative mortality and improving prognosis. An artificial intelligence approach was used to build a predictive model of PAO by clinical data-driven machine learning to predict the incidence of PAO after total arch repair for AAAD. This study included 380 patients with AAAD. The clinical features that are associated with PAO were selected using the LASSO regression analysis. Six differen

Preventing Stillbirth: A Review of Screening and Prevention Strategies.

Stillbirth is a devastating pregnancy complication that still affects many women, particularly from low and middle-income countries. It is often labeled as "unexplained" and therefore unpreventable, despite the knowledge that placental dysfunction has been identified as a leading cause of antepartum stillbirth. Currently, screening for pregnancies at high-risk for placental dysfunction relies on checklists of maternal risk factors and serial measurement of symphyseal-fundal height to identify small for gestational age fetuses. More recently, the first-trimester combined screening algorithm dev
