[Occupational diseases of health care workers].

During the past years in Czechoslovakia some 5000 occupational diseases, intoxications and other occupational health damage was recorded. Per year about one fifth of the affected people were health workers. The authors made an analysis of occupational diseases in the South Moravian region in 1975 to 1990. A total of 1726 occupational diseases of health professionals were recorded. In 91.8% contagious diseases were involved, in 7.4% dermatoses--where the most frequent condition was contact eczema. In 0.5% other occupational diseases were involved such as asthma bronchiale, damage to haematopoie

[Clinico-epidemiological studies of anomalies of the central nervous system in children in evaluation of the effectiveness of their prevention by fetal ultrasonography and genetic monitoring].

A study was made of the prevalence, structure and risk factors of congenital developmental abnormalities (CDAs) of the CNS seen over the recent 17 years in the newborn (217,000 births) and 7845 children of different age, who died during the same period. The stage I work involved a retrospective analysis of the medical documentation up to a broad-scale introduction of ultrasonography of CDAs in the fetus; stage II was concerned, with an analysis of the genetic monitoring after this method was introduced into public health practice, with the coverage of the pregnant amounting to 98%. The recent

Sister chromatid exchanges and chromosome aberration frequencies in plutonium workers.

Peripheral blood lymphocytes from controls and from a small population of plutonium workers with internal plutonium depositions, cumulative chronic external irradiation, and occupational exposure to single or multiple chemicals, were analysed for the frequency of sister chromatid exchanges (SCE) and chromosome aberrations. SCE are sensitive to some chemical mutagens, while chromosome aberrations are induced by moderate to high doses of ionizing radiation, and therefore these different cytogenetic end-points are complementary. We analysed the frequency data from workers grouped by internal syst

Magnetic resonance imaging of the facial nerve.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the facial nerve was evaluated by studying normal volunteers and patients with diseases of the facial nerve with a 0.3 Tesla permanent-magnet MRI system with special surface coils. The normal MR images were correlated with the anatomy of thin cryosection specimens of fresh cadavers. The seventh nerve was followed from its nucleus in the brainstem through the temporal bone to the parotid gland bed. The entire labyrinth and tympanic portions, as well as the geniculate ganglion, could be shown with appropriate scan planes. Examples of brainstem diseases affecti

An exploratory case-control study of brain tumors in adults.

An exploratory study of brain tumors in adults was carried out using 215 cases diagnosed in Southern Ontario between 1979 and 1982, with an individually matched, hospital control series. Significantly elevated risks were observed for reported use of spring water, drinking of wine, and consumption of pickled fish, together with a significant protective effect for the regular consumption of any of several types of fruit. While these factors are consistent with a role for N-nitroso compounds in the etiology of these tumors, for several other factors related to this hypothesis, no association was

Deficient expression of enhanced reactivation of parvovirus H-1 in ataxia telangiectasia cells irradiated with X-rays or u.v. light.

Cells of patients with ataxia telangiectasia (AT), an inherited disease characterized by a high propensity to cancer, are hypersensitive to ionizing radiation. We investigated whether the hyper-radiosensitivity of AT cells correlated with a defect in their constitutive and/or conditional ability to rescue a damaged exogenous virus. For that purpose, parvovirus H-1, a single-stranded DNA virus whose intranuclear replication mostly relies on host cell functions, was used as a probe. The survival of u.v.- or gamma-irradiated H-1 was measured in X-, u.v.- or mock-irradiated human cells of normal (

Magnetic resonance imaging in human pregnancy.

Magnetic resonance imaging is a new noninvasive diagnostic technique that involves no ionizing radiation, has no known significant adverse biologic effects, and produces high resolution cross-sectional body images. When compared with sonography and x-ray computed axial tomography, magnetic resonance imaging may have several advantages. To investigate its clinical role in obstetrics, magnetic resonance imaging was used to examine 11 women with abnormal pregnancies. Prior ultrasound examination showed abnormal appearing fetuses in five, abnormalities of the amnionic fluid volume in five, and one

Prevention of infection on the oncology unit.

Various combinations of immune deficiency, tumor effect, surgery, ionizing radiation, chemotherapy, and neutropenia result in infection-prone states for hospitalized cancer patients. Recognition of nosocomial infection may be difficult, and fever may be the only finding. Pathogens may be exogenously acquired from the contaminated hospital environment. Transmission by contact with hospital personnel is the usual mode of exogenous acquisition of hospital bacteria, and handwashing is the most effective means of prevention. The utility of conventional protective isolation in prevention of exogenou

Impact of One-Catheter Strategy with TIG I Catheter on Coronary Catheterization Performance and Economic Costs.

BACKGROUND: Coronary angiography with two catheters is the traditional strategy for diagnostic coronary procedures. TIG I catheter permits to cannulate both coronary arteries, avoiding exchanging catheters during coronary angiography by transradial access. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to evaluate the impact of one-catheter strategy, by avoiding catheter exchange, on coronary catheterization performance and economic costs. METHODS: Transradial coronary diagnostic procedures conducted from January 2013 to June 2017 were collected. One-catheter strategy (TIG I catheter) and two-catheter

Lgr5+ stem cells are indispensable for radiation-induced intestinal regeneration.

The intestinal epithelium continually self-renews and can rapidly regenerate after damage. Lgr5 marks mitotically active intestinal stem cells (ISCs). Importantly, intestinal homeostasis can be maintained after depletion of Lgr5(+) cells due to the activation of Lgr5(-) reserve ISCs. The Lgr5(-) ISC populations are thought to play a similar role during intestinal regeneration following radiation-induced damage. We tested this regeneration hypothesis by combining depletion of Lgr5(+) ISCs with radiation exposure. In contrast to the negligible effect of Lgr5(+) ISC loss during homeostasis, deple

Investigation on the efficacy of a tissue equivalent material bolus for BNCT.

BACKGROUND: In radiation therapy, the use of bolus is an effective technique for improving the surface dose. This irradiation technique is also used in BNCT. However, since BNCT uses neutron irradiation, it is important to evaluate both the neutron moderation characteristic and the radioactivation of the bolus. PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate the tissue equivalence and activation of commercially available boluses for use in BNCT. METHODS: Two types of commercially available boluses were evaluated. The boluses were placed on a water phantom and irradiated using the NeuCure BNCT system.

Interactive RadioEpidemiological Program (IREP): a web-based tool for estimating probability of causation/assigned share of radiogenic cancers.

The Interactive RadioEpidemiological Program (IREP) is a Web-based, interactive computer code that is used to estimate the probability that a given cancer in an individual was induced by given exposures to ionizing radiation. IREP was developed by a Working Group of the National Cancer Institute and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and was adopted and modified by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) for use in adjudicating claims for compensation for cancer under the Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation Program Act of 2000. Imaging modalities for low back pain in children: a review of spondyloysis and undiagnosed mechanical back pain.

PURPOSE: Mechanical low back pain is common in the pediatric population; recent studies have shown that undiagnosed mechanical low back pain (UMLBP) is the most common cause of low back pain presenting in adolescents, accounting for up to 78% of cases. Spondylolysis/spondylolisthesis is the most common cause with diagnosed pathology observed in this age group. The goals of this study are to: determine the natural history of low back pain, evaluate the value of radiographic studies in establishing a diagnosis of spondylolysis, and determine the cost and radiation effective doses (EDs) associate

Co-exposure to inhaled tungsten particles and low-dose gamma rays: neurotoxicological outcome in rats.

Throughout their lives, individuals are exposed to various pollutants, potentially including co-exposure to radiological and chemical stressors. Yet, existing literature about these combinations is scarce. We selected tungsten and ionizing radiations. Tungsten is an emerging contaminant present as aerosolized particles in several scenarios, potentially concurrently with low-dose irradiation, causing a co-exposure. The cerebral toxicity of this co-exposure was studied after 24 h and 28 days in the frontal cortex and olfactory bulb of male Sprague-Dawley rats exposed to gamma irradiation (50 mGy

Broadband Carrier-Envelope Phase-Controlled Stimulated Ultraviolet Emission from Carbon Dioxide Ions.

A coherent broadband ultraviolet light source is essential for both fundamental research and industrial applications, yet its generation remains challenging. Here, we demonstrate microjoule-level ultraviolet emission spanning 300-450 nm from carbon dioxide ions (CO_{2}^{+}), driven by carrier-envelope-phase (CEP)-stabilized, near-single-cycle light pulses. The radiation arises from transitions between the first excited and ground cationic states, created by strong-field ionization with near-infrared pulses, and self-seeded by either self-phase modulation (SPM) or third-harmonic (TH) generation

Impact of Hypoxia on Carbon Ion Therapy in Glioblastoma Cells: Modulation by LET and Hypoxia-Dependent Genes.

Tumor hypoxia is known to limit the efficacy of ionizing radiations, a concept called oxygen enhancement ratio (OER). OER depends on physical factors such as pO2 and linear energy transfer (LET). Biological pathways, such as the hypoxia-inducible transcription factors (HIF), might also modulate the influence of LET on OER. Glioblastoma (GB) is resistant to low-LET radiation (X-rays), due in part to the hypoxic environment in this brain tumor. Here, we aim to evaluate in vitro whether high-LET particles, especially carbon ion radiotherapy (CIRT), can overcome the contribution of hypoxia to radi

Stress-specific signatures: expression profiling of p53 wild-type and -null human cells.

Gene expression responses of human cell lines exposed to a diverse set of stress agents were compared by cDNA microarray hybridization. The B-lymphoblastoid cell line TK6 (p53 wild-type) and its p53-null derivative, NH32, were treated in parallel to facilitate investigation of p53-dependent responses. RNA was extracted 4 h after the beginning of treatment when no notable decrease in cell viability was evident in the cultures. Gene expression signatures were defined that discriminated between four broad general mechanisms of stress agents: Non-DNA-damaging stresses (heat shock, osmotic shock, a
