Assessment of behavioral and cognitive impulsivity: development and validation of the Lifetime History of Impulsive Behaviors Interview.

The construction and initial psychometric evaluation of an interview assessment of clinically significant impulsivity (Lifetime History of Impulsive Behaviors; LHIB) is presented. Personality-disordered and control subjects participated by completing self-report measures of depression, anxiety and social desirability, along with self-report and laboratory analogue measures of impulsivity, and finally the LHIB. The LHIB demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency and test-retest reliability. Supporting concurrent construct validity, scores on the LHIB correlated with other self-report m

Measuring stress resilience and coping in vulnerable youth: the Social Competence Interview.

A brief interview to measure stress coping capabilities was developed and tested in 4 samples of African American and White adolescents in low-income neighborhoods of 2 large U.S. cities. The Social Competence Interview (SCI) is a 10-min social stressor that assesses physiological and social-emotional responses to a recurring real-life problem. A new behavioral coding system using audiotapes permits reliable and valid assessment of components of social competence, including Interpersonal Skills (expressiveness, empathy), Goal-Oriented Strivings in coping (self defense, social acceptance, compe

Rating depression and anxiety after mastectomy: observer versus self-rating scales.

Paykel's Clinical Interview for Depression (CID), an observer-rated scale, and Kellner's Symptom Questionnaire (SQ), a self-rating inventory, were administered to twenty-six patients with breast cancer: 1) the day prior to discharge after mastectomy or lumpectomy, 2) after six months, during a follow-up outpatient visit. There were no significant changes in depression and anxiety (except for self-rated anxiety) and, indeed, there were very high test-retest correlations. Observer and self-rated assessments were significantly related, and these correlations improved on outpatient follow-up. DSM-

Can spiritual care education reduce the anxiety of mothers of hospitalized immature infants?

BACKGROUND: Hospitalization of a preterm infant in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) is a significant stressor for mothers, often leading to heightened anxiety that affects both their well-being and maternal-infant interaction. Spiritual self-care is a nonpharmacological approach that can help mothers manage anxiety and cope with their child's hospitalization. This study examines the impact of spiritual self-care education on maternal anxiety in mothers with preterm infants admitted to the NICU. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This quasi-experimental study involved 90 mothers of preterm infants,

Factors Explaining Limited Daily Hand-use in Individuals with Fair-Good Motor Ability Post-Stroke.

BackgroundDespite fair-to-good motor ability of their affected upper extremity, individuals post-stroke often exhibit limited daily hand-use, possibly due to factors beyond the motor impairment.ObjectiveTo identify the factors that best explain the variance in daily hand-use, beyond the motor impairment.MethodsA cross-sectional study included individuals post-stroke with fair-to-good upper extremity motor ability (Fugl-Meyer Assessment>30/66). Hand-use was assessed using the Rating of Everyday Arm-Use in the Community and Home (REACH), which is a self-report questionnaire. We assessed the foll

What race means for health among Black Americans: How microaggressions shape self-efficacy and readiness for behavior change.

OBJECTIVES: Racial microaggressions in health care are an underexamined mechanism through which structural racism shapes health behavior change among Black Americans. Drawing on microaggression and ecological systems theory, this research examines how essentialist health messages and clinical microaggressions relate to self-efficacy and readiness for cardiovascular health behaviors. METHOD: Across two experimental mixed methods studies, a nationally representative sample of Black American adults viewed health messages varying in racial essentialism, from absent to ambiguous to explicit microa

PA Educator Advancement Is a Workforce Issue: National Survey Findings.

INTRODUCTION: Approximately 80% of physician assistant/associate (PA) new faculty come directly from clinical practice into academia, often with limited preparation for academic career advancement. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the perceived barriers, institutional resources, and predictors of self-efficacy navigating promotion and tenure (P&T) decisions among PA educators nationwide. METHODS: A pilot-tested, IRB-approved survey was administered via multichannel convenience sampling (n = 270). Independent variables included institutional criteria, resource utility, mentorship type,

Associations of Self-Rated Deficits in Executive Function with Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms, Adaptive Behaviors, and Bladder Health among Women.

BACKGROUND: Poorer performance on standardized tests of cognitive function is associated with urinary incontinence (UI), overactive bladder, and poorer bladder health among people aged 40 and older. OBJECTIVE: To examine whether self-rated deficits in executive function domains (organization/problem solving, inhibitory control/self-restraint, self-regulation of emotions) are associated with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS), perceived bladder health and function, and adaptive behaviors to prevent or manage UI among adult women across the life course. METHODS: Surveys were administered as p

Neural sensitivity to translational self- and object-motion velocities.

The ability to detect and assess world-relative object-motion is a critical computation performed by the visual system. This computation, however, is greatly complicated by the observer's movements, which generate a global pattern of motion on the observer's retina. How the visual system implements this computation is poorly understood. Since we are potentially able to detect a moving object if its motion differs in velocity (or direction) from the expected optic flow generated by our own motion, here we manipulated the relative motion velocity between the observer and the object within a stat

Longitudinal Relations Between Childhood Maltreatment, Emotion Regulation Difficulties, and Suicidal Ideation and Non-Suicidal Self-Injury: An 18-Month Investigation of Psychiatrically Hospitalized Adolescents.

Within the Dimensional Model of Adversity and Psychopathology, extant research shows that exposure to threat-including emotional, physical, and sexual abuse-is linked to psychopathology among adolescents; problems with emotion regulation may, at least in part, explain this association. Both theoretical and empirical work also suggests that emotion regulation difficulties-particularly access to emotion regulation strategies-may mediate the relation between threat and self-injurious thoughts and behavior, though no studies to date have explicitly tested this model. The current study tested relat
