Incidence of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) in Latin America and the Caribbean before and during the 2015-2016 Zika virus epidemic: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: A severe neurological disorder, Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is the leading cause of acute flaccid paralysis. Enhanced surveillance of GBS in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) following the 2015-2016 Zika virus (ZIKV) epidemic presents an opportunity to estimate, for the first time, the regional incidence of GBS. METHODS AND FINDINGS: For this systematic review and meta-analysis, we searched nine scientific databases and grey literature from January 1, 1980 to October 1, 2018. Sources with primary data on incident GBS cases in LAC within a well-defined population and timefram

Randomized Placebo-/Sham-Controlled Trials of Spinal Cord Stimulation: A Systematic Review and Methodological Appraisal.

OBJECTIVES: The recent availability of paraesthesia/sensation free spinal cord stimulation (SCS) modalities allow the design of clinical trials of SCS using placebo/sham controls and blinding of patients, clinicians, and researchers. The aims of this study were to: 1) systematically review the current evidence base of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of SCS placebo/sham trials and 2) to undertake a methodological critique of their methods. Based on this critique, we developed a checklist for the design and reporting of future RCTs of SCS. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Electronic data bases were s

Risks and Benefits of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Medication on Behavioral and Neuropsychiatric Outcomes: A Qualitative Review of Pharmacoepidemiology Studies Using Linked Prescription Databases.

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) medication is one of the most commonly prescribed medication classes in child and adolescent psychiatry, and its use is increasing rapidly in adult psychiatry. However, major questions and concerns remain regarding the benefits and risks of ADHD medication, especially in real-world settings. We conducted a qualitative systematic review of studies that investigated the effects of ADHD medication on behavioral and neuropsychiatric outcomes using linked prescription databases from the last 10 years and identified 40 studies from Europe, North Americ

The influence of statins on aortic aneurysm after operation: A retrospective nationwide study.

Aortic aneurysm (AA) is a disease with substantially higher health care costs and very high mortality upon rupture. Statins have a non-lipid-lowering pleiotropic mechanism that may be beneficial for AA in disease progression and improvement of AA patient outcomes. Previous studies have been conducted with some limitations and without considering immortal time bias, lag time, and adherence. The aim of our study was to analyze the effect of statin use on AA postoperation after controlling for these factors. All postoperative patients with a diagnosis of AA in Taiwan from 2004 to 2012 were include

Prostate cancer adverse pathology reclassification in patients undergoing active surveillance in a long-term follow-up series.

BACKGROUND: Active surveillance (AS) has become a valid option for patients with a very low risk of prostate cancer (PC) with a widespread application. There are still a few series, with a medium follow-up longer than 5 years, reporting data on pathological upgrading. The objective is to evaluate the changes in surveillance biopsies of patients with low-risk PC in a long-term follow-up and determine if a longer stay in AS could involve worse pathological findings. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis of our institutional database of patients with PC undergoing AS during 2004 to 201

Real-World Incidence of Pacemaker and Defibrillator Implantation Following Diagnostic Monitoring With an Insertable Cardiac Monitor.

Insertable cardiac monitors (ICM) are used in patients with suspected or known cardiac arrhythmias; the resulting diagnosis can lead to therapeutic interventions such as a pacemaker (PPM) or defibrillator (ICD) implant. We investigated the incidence of these implants in a large, real-world, cohort of ICM patients. The Optum© EHR de-identified database was used to identify patients with cardiovascular diseases, an ICM implant, ≥180 days of follow-up before and after ICM implant, and no previous history of a PPM or ICD. The Kaplan-Meier (KM) incidence estimates for device implants following an I

Decreased breast cancer-specific mortality risk in patients with a history of thyroid cancer.

Previous studies have documented an intrinsic association between breast cancer (BC) and thyroid cancer (TC), but the clinical relevance of this relationship is not well defined. In the present study, we specifically investigated the impact of a history of TC on clinical outcomes of BC. We performed a population-based comparative analysis of tumor behaviors and BC-specific mortalities in 427,893 female patients with BC in the USA Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results 9 database (1973-2013). In this cohort of subjects, 2,569 patients also had a history of differentiated TC (BC/TC), includi

Multicenter database registry for endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography: Japan Endoscopic Database Project.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Few studies have reported on a national, population-based endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) database. Hence, in 2015, we established a multicenter ERCP database registry, the Japan Endoscopic Database (JED) Project in preparation for a nationwide endoscopic database. The objective the present study was to evaluate this registry before the establishment of a nationwide endoscopic database. METHODS: From 1 January 2015 to 31 March 2017, we collected and analyzed the ERCP data of all patients who underwent ERCP in four participating centers in the JED Proj
