Characterization of intracranial atherosclerotic stenosis using high-resolution MRI study--rationale and design.

BACKGROUND: Intracranial atherosclerosis is a leading cause of stroke, but little is known about the composition of the intracranial atherosclerotic lesion and how intracranial plaque morphology is related to the risk of stroke. High-resolution magnetic resonance imaging (HR MRI) has been used in patients with extracranial carotid atherosclerosis as an in vivo tool to identify, with high-interrater agreement, histologically defined plaque components (i.e., intraplaque hemorrhage, fibrous cap, and lipid core), which have been shown to be predictors of recurrent stroke. With careful imaging the

Evaluation of left ventricular function by three-dimensional speckle-tracking echocardiography in patients with myocardial bridging of the left anterior descending coronary artery.

BACKGROUND: To understand the influence of myocardial bridging (MB) on left ventricular (LV) function, myocardial function was studied in patients with MB of the left anterior descending coronary artery (LAD) using three-dimensional speckle-tracking echocardiography (STE). METHODS: Left anterior descending coronary artery MB was diagnosed by coronary angiography in 82 subjects. Patients were divided into three groups according to the percentage of systolic narrowing of the compressed segment: 30% to 49% was defined as group I (24 patients), 50% to 74% as group II (28 patients), and ≥75% as gr

Four Steps in Diagnosing Complete Agenesis of the Corpus Callosum in Prenatal Life.

PURPOSE: Among congenital brain anomalies, complete agenesis of the corpus callosum (cACC) including cases of callosal hypoplasia has a prevalence of 1.8 per 10 000 in the general population. It is also one of the most challenging brain anomalies to detect during the mid-trimester ultrasound scan. Standard axial planes do not provide enough information to make the definitive diagnosis of cACC. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From our library of images and ultrasound reports, we reviewed our most recent cases of complete agenesis of the corpus callosum in the fetus at the mid-trimester scan. In our ana

Use of quantitative MRI for the detection of progressive cartilage degeneration in a mini-pig model of osteoarthritis caused by anterior cruciate ligament transection.

BACKGROUND: To investigate the progression of cartilage degeneration using delayed gadolinium-enhanced MRI of cartilage (dGEMRIC) and T2 mapping in a mini-pig model of osteoarthritis (OA) caused by anterior cruciate ligament transection (ACLT). METHODS: Twelve mini-pigs underwent ACLT in the left knee and were monitored by dGEMRIC (T1, gadolinium [Gd]) and T2 mapping after 2, 4, or 6 weeks (n = 4 each). No ACLT surgery was performed in four healthy control mini-pigs, which were also monitored by dGEMRIC and T2 mapping. Cartilage samples from the weight-bearing regions of the left medial femor

Use of an internal reference in semi-quantitative dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI (DCE MRI) of indeterminate adnexal masses.

OBJECTIVE: Semi-quantitative dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI (DCE MRI) has proven useful in discriminating benign from borderline/malignant adnexal lesions. Our aim was to assess if the use of a lesion-to-internal-reference ratio improved the performance in characterizing adnexal masses and which internal reference was suitable. METHODS: Semi-quantitative DCE MRI images of 71 indeterminate adnexal lesions were retrospectively reviewed. A region of interest was manually drawn onto the enhancing solid component, psoas muscle and normal outer myometrium. The DCE parameters were evaluated, and the

Hydrocephalus decreases arterial spin-labeled cerebral perfusion.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Reduced cerebral perfusion has been observed with elevated intracranial pressure. We hypothesized that arterial spin-labeled CBF can be used as a marker for symptomatic hydrocephalus. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We compared baseline arterial spin-labeled CBF in 19 children (median age, 6.5 years; range, 1-17 years) with new posterior fossa brain tumors and clinical signs of intracranial hypertension with arterial spin-labeled CBF in 16 age-matched controls and 4 patients with posterior fossa tumors without ventriculomegaly or signs of intracranial hypertension. Detection of breast cancer with a computer-aided detection applied to full-field digital mammography.

A study was conducted to evaluate the sensitivity of computer-aided detection (CAD) with full-field digital mammography in detection of breast cancer, based on mammographic appearance and histopathology. Retrospectively, CAD sensitivity was assessed in total group of 152 cases for subgroups based on breast density, mammographic presentation, lesion size, and results of histopathological examination. The overall sensitivity of CAD was 91 % (139 of 152 cases). CAD detected 100 % (47/47) of cancers manifested as microcalcifications; 98 % (62/63) of those manifested as non-calcified masses; 100 %

Primary ciliary dyskinesia assessment by means of optical flow analysis of phase-contrast microscopy images.

Primary ciliary dyskinesia implies cilia with defective or total absence of motility, which may result in sinusitis, chronic bronchitis, bronchiectasis and male infertility. Diagnosis can be difficult and is based on an abnormal ciliary beat frequency (CBF) and beat pattern. In this paper, we present a method to determine CBF of isolated cells through the analysis of phase-contrast microscopy images, estimating cilia motion by means of an optical flow algorithm. After having analyzed 28 image sequences (14 with a normal beat pattern and 14 with a dyskinetic pattern), the normal group presented

Is joint effusion on MRI specific for haemophilia?

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scores for haemophilic arthropathy are useful for evaluation of early and moderate arthropathy. The most recent additive International Prophylaxis Study Group (IPSG) MRI scale for haemophilic arthropathy includes joint effusion. However, it is unknown whether joint effusion is haemophilia specific. Correct interpretation of joint effusion is needed for outcome assessment of prophylactic therapies in haemophilia care. The aim of this study was to compare joint effusion on MRI between young adults with haemophilia and healthy controls. MRI's of both knees and ank

The value of high-frequency ultrasonographic imaging for quantifying trigger digits: a correlative study with clinical findings in patients with different severity grading.

Trigger digit is recognized as thickening and constriction of the flexor tendon sheath at the base of digits. This study investigates the correlation between the severity grading of trigger digits and clinical findings from high-frequency ultrasonography. We measured and compared thicknesses, areas and pathological changes of the flexor digit tendons among total, contracture and noncontracture trigger digits and noninvolved contralateral digits. Forty-seven patients with 55 idiopathic trigger digits (36 contracture and 19 noncontracture) and 55 noninvolved contralateral digits were examined us

Predicting the risk and severity of acute spinal cord injury after a minor trauma to the cervical spine.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Acute spinal cord injury (SCI) after a minor trauma to the cervical spine has been reported in patients without preceding neurologic symptoms. Spinal canal stenosis may be the reason for the discrepancy between the severity of the injury and that of the trauma. The spinal canal to vertebral body ratio is often used to assess canal stenosis on conventional radiographs. However, the ratio does not appraise soft-tissue stenosis and canal narrowing at the level of the intervertebral disc. Parameters measured on magnetic resonance (MR) images may thus be more meaningful. The rel

Immediate impact of successful percutaneous mitral valve commissurotomy on echocardiographic measures of right ventricular contractility.

BACKGROUND: Functional analysis of the right ventricle cannot be reliably evaluated by conventional echocardiography, because of its complex geometry and load dependence of ejection phase indices. The Tei index, dP/dt, and myocardial acceleration during isovolumic contraction are parameters of right ventricular (RV) contractility unaffected by RV geometry. However, the effect of loading conditions on these parameters is controversial. The aim of this study was to examine how afterload reduction observed after percutaneous transverse mitral commissurotomy (PTMC) in patients with mitral stenosis

Quantitative assessment of external carotid artery territory supply with modified vessel-encoded arterial spin-labeling.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: In patients with carotid stenosis or occlusion, cerebral blood could be supplied through collateral pathways to improve regional blood flow and protect against ischemic events. The contribution of collaterals from the ICA can be assessed by depiction of vascular perfusion territories with ASL. However, so far there is no method available to evaluate the collateral perfusion territory from the ECA in MR imaging. In this study, we present a new labeling scheme based on VE-ASL to quantitatively assess the perfusion territory of the ECA. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A new labeli
