Continuous Prediction of Wrist Joint Kinematics Using Surface Electromyography From the Perspective of Muscle Anatomy and Muscle Synergy Feature Extraction.

Post-stroke upper limb dysfunction severely impacts patients' daily life quality. Utilizing sEMG signals to predict patients' motion intentions enables more effective rehabilitation by precisely adjusting the assistance level of rehabilitation robots. Employing the muscle synergy (MS) features can establish more accurate and robust mappings between sEMG and motion intentions. However, traditional matrix factorization algorithms based on blind source separation still exhibit certain limitations in extracting MS features. This paper proposes four deep learning models to extract MS features from

Generalized Cross-Domain Framework for Gesture Recognition via Wrist-Worn Sensing.

Wearable sensing technology offers a natural and convenient means of human-computer interaction, particularly for gesture recognition, yet domain shifts in wrist-worn single-site sensing pose significant challenges for cross-domain gesture recognition. To address this, we proposed a generalized cross-domain framework for fine-grained gesture recognition using wrist-worn single-site sensing. Concretely, we presented a Multi-Branch Network, which combines feature-level multimodal fusion with enhanced inter-modal interaction to effectively capture fine-grained gestures. To this end, we constructe

A deep learning model for predicting systemic lupus erythematosus-associated epitopes.

BACKGROUND: The accurate prediction of epitopes associated with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) plays a vital role in advancing our understanding of autoimmune pathogenesis and in designing effective immunotherapeutics. Traditional bioinformatics methods often struggle to capture the intricate sequence patterns and high-dimensional signals characteristic of epitope data. Deep learning presents a compelling alternative, with its ability to perform automatic feature learning and model complex dependencies inherent in biological sequences. This study proposes a hybrid deep learning architectur…

Temporal and Spectral Impedance Myography: Visualization of Dynamic Electrical Properties in Forearm Tissue During Wrist Movements.

The recently proposed short-time impedance spectroscopy (short-time IS) measures impedance spectra with high temporal resolution using a nonsinusoidal mode-switching oscillator. With a view to application for muscular disease diagnosis and human-machine interaction, this study presents the temporal and spectral impedance myography using the short-time IS system. We applied the proposed system to the measurement of human forearm impedance and analyzed impedance changes during wrist motion. The forearm's impedance at 40 frequency points was measured by our developed system. The forearm's rapid i

Non-Invasive Neural Interfacing for Tetraplegic Individuals Using Residual Motor Neuron Activity Decoded at the Forearm or Wrist.

Hand paralysis due to spinal cord injury (SCI) greatly limits the quality of life of injured individuals. Despite complete loss of hand digit control, however, residual electrical muscle activity is often detected from these injured individuals. From this activity, individual motor unit action potentials can be identified and potentially used to infer their motion intent for interfacing purposes. We recently demonstrated that residual motor units can be decoded from tetraplegic individuals with SCI, by mapping both proximal and distal forearm activity using hundreds of electromyography (EMG) e

Psychometric properties of the Danish SDM-Q-9 questionnaire for shared decision-making in patients with pelvic floor disorders and low back pain: item response theory modelling.

BACKGROUND: Worldwide, involving patients in healthcare has become a focus point. Shared decision-making (SDM) is one element of patient involvement and, in many countries, including Denmark, requires culturally adapted and validated questionnaires to measure diverse patient populations' perceptions of this concept. SDM-Q-9, a widely used nine-item generic questionnaire, assesses patients' perception of nine elements during decision-making in consultations. The primary aim of this study is to assess the psychometric performance of the Danish version of the SDM-Q-9 through item response theory

Human Visual Transduction Mechanism-Inspired Adaptive Enhancement Network during Endoscopy.

Disposable endoscopes are increasingly popular due to the lower risk of cross-contamination. Clearer endoscopes have shown the ability to improve adenoma detection rate. However, due to cost constraints, disposable endoscopes are equipped with smaller sensor arrays than reusable ones, resulting in lower resolution and degraded performance in both subjective and automated diagnostics. In this paper, an adaptive enhancement network (AEN) is proposed to recover the details of the lesion region, thereby assisting endoscopists during endoscopy. It combines the physiological mechanism of the human e

Deep Learning-Based Stride Segmentation With Wearable Sensors: Effects of Data Quantity, Sensor Location, and Task.

Accurate stride segmentation from wearable sensors is foundational for digital gait assessment tools, yet systematic evaluations of deep learning approaches across varied mobility tasks remain limited. We developed and assessed Temporal Convolutional Network (TCN) models for stride segmentation using data from 121 older adults with and without Parkinson's disease, specifically evaluating how performance varies with model development data quantity, sensor location, and movement complexity. Using a fixed-size test set of 40 participants, we found that lower limb sensors achieved F1 scores above

VLD-Net: Localization and Detection of the Vertebrae From X-Ray Images by Reinforcement Learning With Adaptive Exploration Mechanism and Spine Anatomy Information.

Accurate and efficient vertebrae localization and detection in X-ray images are essential for diagnosing and treating spinal diseases. However, most existing methods struggle with the complexity of spine X-ray images, yielding inaccurate results due to insufficient utilization of spinal anatomy information and neglect of individual vertebra characteristics. In this paper, we propose an innovative Vertebrae Localization and Detection Network (VLD-Net) to accurately assist physicians in diagnosing spine-related diseases from X-ray images. Our VLD-Net, for the first time, defines vertebrae locali

Novel Digital Biomarkers for Fine Motor Skills Assessment in Psoriatic Arthritis: The DaktylAct Touch-Based Serious Game Approach.

Psoriatic Arthritis (PsA) is a chronic, inflammatory disease affecting joints, substantially impacting patients' quality of life, with European guidelines for managing PsA emphasizing the importance of assessing hand function. Here, we present a set of novel digital biomarkers (dBMs) derived from a touchscreen-based serious game approach, DaktylAct, intended as a proxy, gamified, objective assessment of hand impairment, with emphasis on fine motor skills, caused by PsA. This is achieved by its design, where the user controls a cannon to aim at and hit targets using two finger pinch-in/out and

Lightweight Edge-Aware Feature Extraction for Point-of-Care Health Monitoring.

Osteoporosis classification from X-ray images remains challenging due to the high visual similarity between scans of healthy individuals and osteoporotic patients. In this paper, we propose a novel framework that extracts a discriminative gradient-based map from each X-ray image, capturing subtle structural differences that are not readily apparent to the human eye. The method uses analytic Gabor filters to decompose the image into multi-scale, multi-orientation components. At each pixel, we construct a filter response matrix, from which second-order texture features are derived via covariance

Deep Learning-Based Automated Measurement of Cervical Length in Transvaginal Ultrasound Images of Pregnant Women.

Cervical length (CL) measurement using transvaginal ultrasound is an effective screening tool to assess the risk of preterm birth. An adequate assessment of CL is crucial, however, manual sonographic CL measurement is highly operator-dependent and cumbersome. Therefore, a reliable and reproducible automatic method for CL measurement is in high demand to reduce inter-rater variability and improve workflow. Despite the increasing use of artificial intelligence techniques in ultrasound, applying deep learning (DL) to analyze ultrasound images of the cervix remains a challenge due to low signal-to

A Dual-Branch Cross-Modality-Attention Network for Thyroid Nodule Diagnosis Based on Ultrasound Images and Contrast-Enhanced Ultrasound Videos.

Contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) has been extensively employed as an imaging modality in thyroid nodule diagnosis due to its capacity to visualise the distribution and circulation of micro-vessels in organs and lesions in a non-invasive manner. However, current CEUS-based thyroid nodule diagnosis methods suffered from: 1) the blurred spatial boundaries between nodules and other anatomies in CEUS videos, and 2) the insufficient representations of the local structural information of nodule tissues by the features extracted only from CEUS videos. In this paper, we propose a novel dual-branch n

A machine learning-based model for predicting paroxysmal and persistent atrial fibrillation based on EHR.

BACKGROUND: There is no effective way to accurately predict paroxysmal and persistent atrial fibrillation (AF) subtypes unless electrocardiogram (ECG) observation is obtained. We aim to develop a predictive model using a machine learning algorithm for identification of paroxysmal and persistent AF, and investigate the influencing factors. METHODS: We collected demographic data, medication use, serological indicators, and baseline cardiac ultrasound data of all included subjects, totaling 50 variables. The diagnosis of AF subtypes is confirmed by ECG observation for at least more than 7 days.
