Accumulation of inspissated secretions that are difficult to clear and congest the airways is a feature of lung disease in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF). These secretions restrict airflow, harbour infection and limit the delivery of inhaled drugs including gene therapy vectors to the underlying target cells. Unfractionated heparin (UFH) has mucolytic properties suggesting that it may be a useful therapeutic agent for lung disease in these patients. A simple route for the synthesis of silver-protein (core-shell) nanoparticles using spent mushroom substrate (SMS) has been demonstrated in this work. SMS exhibits an organic surface that reduces silver ions and stabilizes the silver nanoparticles by a secreted protein. O(3), NO(2), SO(2), CO and PM(10) concentrations, simultaneously determined for the first time in Belgrade urban area in the autumnal period of 2005, are presented. The obtained results display similar behaviour of SO(2), NO(2), CO, PM(10) opposite from that of O(3). The crystallization pathway of indium tin oxide nanoparticles during solvothermal synthesis in benzyl alcohol was investigated. We report here the case of a young woman who presented with pain, fever and apparent cutaneous sub ischaemia following embolisation of the uterine arteries for postpartum haemorrhagia. Self-organized and strained CdSSe quantum dot (Q-dot) thin films have been grown on ITO-coated glass substrates by novel wet chemical route. The Q-dots are (002) oriented faceted pyramids with average particle size of 7.5 nm. The X-ray diffraction results reveal the formation of a solid solution of CdSSe. Atomic force microscopy is used to investigate the morphology of the nanocrystalline thin films. The energy dispersive X-ray analysis spectrum confirms the presence of Cd, S, and Se in the films. Optical absorption and photoluminescence spectra show the blue shift for quantum dot thin films.

Sterically stabilized CdS nanorods, 3-5 nm in diameter with aspect ratios ranging from 4 to 15, were observed to self-align into networks of stripes several micrometers long when drop-cast from dispersions at submonolayer coverage. The stripes are two to three nanorods thick with nanorods assembled side-by-side with their long axes parallel to the stripe direction. Energetic forces between nanorods, such as van der Waals and dipole-dipole attractions, favor parallel nanorod alignment; however, we propose that pattern formation is kinetically limited, or mediated, by solvent evaporation.

PbSe nanocrystals with rock-salt structure are grown on the tips of colloidal CdS and CdSe nanorods. The facets of wurtzite rods provide a substrate with various degrees of reactivity for the growth of PbSe. The presence of dangling Cd bonds may explain subtle differences between nonequivalent facets resulting in the selective nucleation of PbSe only on one of the two tips of each CdS rod. This approach has the potential to facilitate the fabrication of heterostructures with tailored optical and electronic properties.

A field study was conducted on 42 asphalt-roofing workers at 7 built-up roofing sites across the United States. Sixteen out of 42 samples show levels of exposure to asphalt fumes that exceed the current American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists' (ACGIH)-recommended threshold limit value of 0.5 mg/m(3) as benzene extractable inhalable particulate.
