The meaning of momentary psychotic-like experiences in a non-clinical sample: A personality perspective.

The relationships between Momentary Psychotic-Like Experiences (MPLEs) and HEXACO-complemented by the proneness to PLEs conceptualized as a basic personality trait (Disintegration), and a maladaptive trait (PID-5 Psychoticism)-were investigated in a prospective study that includes experience-sampling methodology (ESM). The main goal was to investigate whether MPLEs are better predicted by HEXACO or measures of the dispositional proneness to PLEs. A sample of 180 participants assessed MPLEs and affective states they experienced in the previous two hours, twice per day, with semi-randomly set as…

Interpersonal emotion regulation in the context of social networks: A focus on borderline personality disorder.

Interpersonal emotion regulation (IER) involves modulating one's emotions through social contact. Considering the extensive emotional and interpersonal difficulties associated with borderline personality disorder (BPD), it is particularly relevant to the study of IER. We examined the frequency and efficacy of IER in relation to BPD features, as well as perceived characteristics of the social network partners utilized for IER, among 149 participants. We found that BPD features were unrelated to the frequency of using IER but negatively related to the perceived efficacy of IER and perceived will…

Mentalization-oriented psychodynamic group therapy for patients with personality disorders: a naturalistic prospective cohort study.

OBJECTIVES: Patients with personality disorders (PDs) are often treated with non-manualized psychodynamic group therapy (PDT) lasting for several years. Non-manualized PDT often combines a variety of therapeutic approaches from different PDT traditions, including mentalization-based therapy. Currently, little is known about the effect of this long-term, costly treatment. This study investigated the extent to which patients with different PDs benefit from mentalization-oriented PDT as it is implemented in clinical practice in terms of symptom severity, interpersonal problems, and general functi…

Predicting educational and social-emotional outcomes in emerging adulthood from intelligence, personality, and socioeconomic status.

Emerging adulthood describes the developmental life stage between adolescence and adulthood, when young people gain important educational and social-emotional skills. Here, we tested to what extent intelligence and personality traits in adolescence, family socioeconomic status (SES), and their interplay predict educational (e.g., educational attainment, degree classification) and social-emotional outcomes (e.g., well-being, volunteering, substance use) in emerging adulthood in a U.K.-representative sample (N = 2,277). Intelligence, personality traits, and family SES accounted together for up t…

Is there a bias in the diagnosis of borderline personality disorder among racially minoritized patients?

Empirical evidence documents disparities in the diagnosis of severe forms of psychopathology among racial/ethnic minority persons. However, research on diagnostic differences in personality disorders is equivocal: Some suggest higher prevalence of personality disorders among racial/ethnic minority persons, whereas other results suggest the opposite. The goal of the current study was to investigate (a) differences in the diagnosis of borderline personality disorder (BPD) in a mostly cisgender, heterosexual sample among racial/ethnic minority patients compared with non-Hispanic White patients an…

Systems Training for Emotional Predictability and Problem Solving for borderline personality disorder: A systematic review.

Systems Training for Emotional Predictability and Problem Solving (STEPPS) is a group treatment program for patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD). The program was intended to be highly accessible, both for patients and therapists. During STEPPS, patients are taught emotion regulation and behavior management skills. This systematic review synthesizes the current empirical status of STEPPS, focusing on research designs, quality of studies, target groups, protocols, and outcome. We selected 20 studies, with three randomized controlled trials. Patients with BPD, subthreshold BPD, and…

Adverse Childhood Experiences and Neurocognition in Borderline Personality Disorder: A Call-to-Action Perspective Review.

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) contribute to the development of personality traits leading to adult borderline personality disorder (BPD). Neurocognitive changes could partly mediate the association between ACEs and BPD. We discuss how exposure to ACEs could induce alterations in neurocognition, which, in turn, would contribute to the development of BPD. We conducted a review of MEDLINE articles through 2021, documenting a link between ACEs, neurocognitive impairments, and BPD, and also focusing on the pairwise associations. ACEs appear to have a strong impact on neurocognition and are a…

The mind possessed: well-being, personality, and cognitive characteristics of individuals regularly experiencing religious possession.

OBJECTIVE: To further our understanding of religious possession experiences by focusing on personality, cognitive, and quality of life outcomes. METHODS: Data collection was undertaken at Umbanda sessions in Brazilian cities. Participants were mediums who regularly experienced possession (n=334) or those who attended the same rituals but had never been possessed (n=54). RESULTS: We found that mediums were not significantly different across variables from the control group, except for anxiety, which was lower among mediums. Correlational and regression analysis showed that the level of meanin…

How childhood maltreatment alters perception and cognition - the predictive processing account of borderline personality disorder.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a severe mental disorder, comprised of heterogeneous psychological and neurobiological pathologies. Here, we propose a predictive processing (PP) account of BPD to integrate these seemingly unrelated pathologies. In particular, we argue that the experience of childhood maltreatment, which is highly prevalent in BPD, leaves a developmental legacy with two facets: first, a coarse-grained, alexithymic model of self and others - leading to a rigidity and inflexibility concerning beliefs about self and others. Second, this developmental legacy leads to a los…

The network structure of psychopathic personality traits in a community sample of young adult females.

Despite the growing body of research on the core characteristics of psychopathy, the potential gender differences in the expression and structuration of psychopathic traits have not received adequate attention. Aimed at testing the tacit supposition that the behavioral manifestations and structural architecture of this personality type as it can be observed in men are transposable to women, the present study investigated the network organization of psychopathic traits in a general population sample of young adult women (n=789; 18-20years old) who completed the Youth Psychopathic Traits Invento…

Insomnia, Time Perspective, and Personality Traits: A Cross-Sectional Study in a Non-Clinical Population.

Insomnia disorder is considered a public health problem and additional studies should investigate predisposing and perpetuating factors. This study examined the relationship between Big Five personality traits, time perspective, and insomnia. In a cross-sectional study, 400 participants (227 women; age range 18-74 years) were administered the Big Five Inventory-10 items, the Zimbardo Time Perspective Inventory, and the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI). A measure of chronotype was also included for control purposes. The results show that insomniacs reported lower scores for conscientiousness and e…

Rethinking aversive personality: Decomposing the Dark Triad traits into their common core and unique flavors.

OBJECTIVE: To explain and predict unethical behavior, much attention has been devoted to the "Dark Triad of Personality", a set of three socially aversive personality traits: Machiavellianism, narcissism, and psychopathy. Despite its popularity, research on the Dark Triad has been beset by recurring concerns surrounding the distinctiveness of its components. Herein, we propose an alternative theoretical view that conceptualizes the Dark Triad traits as specific manifestations of the common core of aversive traits (conceptualized as the Dark Factor of Personality, D) flavored by unique, essenti…

Cognitive remediation therapy: is it a feasible and acceptable psychological treatment for borderline personality disorder?

OBJECTIVE: Cognitive remediation (CR) is increasingly being used to address the cognitive impairment that can occur in people diagnosed with borderline personality disorder (BPD). This study aimed to understand attitudes towards CR in this service user group from the perspective of the person with the diagnosis and clinicians involved in their care. METHOD: Anonymous online surveys were made available to people with a diagnosis of BPD in a public mental health service and clinicians of the same service. RESULTS: Thirty-three percent of service users with a diagnosis of BPD responded to the s…

Adaptive coding occurs in object categorization and may not be associated with schizotypal personality traits.

Processing more likely inputs with higher sensitivity (adaptive coding) enables the brain to represent the large range of inputs coming in from the world. Healthy individuals high in schizotypy show reduced adaptive coding in the reward domain but it is an open question whether these deficits extend to non-motivational domains, such as object categorization. Here, we develop a novel variant of a classic task to test range adaptation for face/house categorization in healthy participants on the psychosis spectrum. In each trial of this task, participants decide whether a presented image is a fac

Acute Effect of Physical Exercise on Negative Affect in Borderline Personality Disorder: A Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: Physical exercise is an evidence-based treatment to reduce symptoms and negative affect in several psychiatric disorders, including depressive, anxiety, and psychotic disorders. However, the effect of physical exercise on negative affect in patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD) has not yet been investigated. In this pilot study, we tested the safety, acceptability, and potential acute effects on negative affect of a single session of aerobic physical exercise in adults with BPD. METHOD: After completing a negative mood induction procedure, 28 adults with BPD were ran…

Examining the Construct Validity of Borderline Personality Traits Using Familial Aggregation and Other External Validators.

Numerous studies have questioned the reliability and validity of borderline personality disorder's (BPD) categorical conceptualization. DSM-5 Section III's alternative trait-based model of BPD may better capture borderline pathology, but aspects of its validity should be further established. Thus, the authors examined whether a latent BPD factor derived from Section III traits exhibits (1) familial aggregation among siblings and (2) association with constructs related to borderline pathology. The authors also tested whether gender moderated associations. A total of 498 community-recruited adul…

Facing the Pandemic in Italy: Personality Profiles and Their Associations With Adaptive and Maladaptive Outcomes.

The negative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on individuals' psychosocial functioning was widely attested during the last year. However, the extent to which individual differences are associated with adaptive and maladaptive outcomes during quarantine in Italy remains largely unexplored. Using a person-oriented approach, the present study explored the association of personality profiles, based on three broad individual dispositions (i.e., positivity, irritability, and hostile rumination) and two self-efficacy beliefs in the emotional area (i.e., expressing positive emotions and regulating ange…

Personality Predictors of Prejudicial Attitudes, Willingness to Engage, and Actual Engagement in Consensual Non-Monogamy.

Personality variables, including sensation-seeking, interpersonal trust, avoidance of uncertainty, endorsement of social conformity, and love styles (Ludus, Eros, Pragma, Storge, Mania, and Agape), were examined as predictors of prejudicial attitudes toward individuals who practice polyamory and personal interest in engaging in consensual non-monogamy (CNM) among 1831 participants who completed anonymous surveys online. Personality characteristics were also compared between individuals who currently practice CNM (n = 67) and case-matched controls involved in monogamous relationships. As predic…

Viral infection changes the expression of personality traits in an insect species reared for consumption.

Disease-induced personality change results from endogenous and adaptive host responses or parasitic manipulation. Within animal husbandry systems understanding the connection between behaviour and disease is important for health monitoring and for designing systems considerate to animal welfare. However, understanding these relationships within insect mass-rearing systems is still in its infancy. We used a simple repeated behavioural-emergence test to examine parasite-induced differences in group personality traits in the house cricket Acheta domesticus, by comparing the behaviours of 37 indiv…

The Association between the Five-factor Model of Personality and Problem Gambling: a Meta-analysis.

This meta-analysis examined the associations between five-factor personality model traits and problem gambling. To be eligible for inclusion in the meta-analysis, studies had to provide effect size data that quantified the magnitude of the association between all five personality traits and problem gambling. Studies also had to use psychometrically sound measures. The meta-analysis included 20 separate samples from 19 studies and 32,222 total participants. The results showed that problem gambling was significantly correlated with the five-factor model of personality. The strongest personality …
