Stress effect on the mandibular dental arch by mentalis muscle over activity, finite element analysis.

OBJECTIVES: The perioral muscles postural and functional abnormality should be clearly evaluated. The influence of the abnormal function of mentalis muscle on the shape and posture of the mandible was evaluated using a finite element approach. METHODS: Finite element analysis was used to create a three-dimensional representation of a human mandible that represents a dry normal mandible with teeth (33-36 gm/cm2). Pressures were applied directly to the labial surface of the mandible's lower anterior dento-alveolar structure reflecting the normal lips muscle function. While on abnormal swallowin…

A biomechanical and physiological study of office seat and tablet device interaction.

Twenty subjects performed typing tasks on a desktop computer and touch-screen tablet in two chairs for an hour each, and the effects of chair, device, and their interactions on each dependent measure were recorded. Biomechanical measures of muscle force, spinal load, and posture were examined, while discomfort was measured via heart rate variability (HRV) and subjective reports. HRV was sensitive enough to differentiate between chair and device interactions. Biomechanically, a lack of seat back mobility forced individuals to maintain an upright seating posture with increased extensor muscle fo…

Validation of Portable Ergonomic Observation (PEO) method using optoelectronic and video recordings.

The validity of the 'Portable Ergonomic Observation' method (PEO) was investigated against posture measurements based on continuous optoelectronic and video recordings made simultaneously with the observation. Work postures and actions during different frequently changing tasks were analyzed using both methods. In general, a high agreement between measured and observed data was achieved for the duration of clearly identifiable sustained postures and actions (such as repetitive movements of hands when typing), as well as for the frequency of clearly distinguishable actions (such as lifts). The …

Noisy galvanic vestibular stimulation induces a sustained improvement in body balance in elderly adults.

Vestibular dysfunction causes postural instability, which is prevalent in the elderly. We previously showed that an imperceptible level of noisy galvanic vestibular stimulation (nGVS) can improve postural stability in patients with bilateral vestibulopathy during the stimulus, presumably by enhancing vestibular information processing. In this study, we investigated the after-effects of an imperceptible long-duration nGVS on body balance in elderly adults. Thirty elderly participants underwent two nGVS sessions in a randomised order. In Session 1, participants received nGVS for 30 min twice wit

Analysis of adenylate cyclase activity in Japanese children with orthostatic dysregulation.

The aim of the study was to clarify the cause of orthostatic dysregulation in Japanese children by analyzing fluctuations in adenylate cyclase activity. Four types of orthostatic dysregulation in Japan include postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome, delayed orthostatic hypotension, immediate orthostatic hypotension, and vasovagal syncope. However, the exact cause of these disorders remains unknown. To identify the cause of these conditions, we examined the resting blood adenylate cyclase activity and basic clinical data (blood pressure, pulse rate) of 30 patients diagnosed with orthostatic

Abnormalities in sensorimotor brain function are related to chronicity of low back pain.

Maladaptive plasticity in the brain may contribute to chronic low back pain (LBP) and underlie the altered postural control of the lumbopelvic musculature that is evident in some individuals with LBP. We recently described an MRI-compatible leg-raise paradigm to measure brain activity associated with lumbopelvic postural control. The objective of this study was to compare brain function in young adults with and without a history of LBP and to determine relationships between brain function, pain, and postural control characteristics. We recruited 55 participants with a history of LBP, who were

Measurement of Three-Dimensional Back Shape of Normal Adults Using a Novel Three-Dimensional Imaging Mobile Surface Topography System (MSTS): An Intra- and Inter-Rater Reliability Study.

Postural and spinal deformities are major contributing factors to musculoskeletal (MSK) disorders. Posture screening and assessment can help to identify early morphological deformities, thereby preventing progression and reducing or correcting them with effective treatments. The study evaluates both intra- and inter-repeatability of using a mobile structured light sensor with a structured light pattern for building an accurate 3D human model and its use in postural screening. 16 young males (age: 25 ± 5.6 years, height: 172 ± 5.3 cm, mass: 69 ± 8.6 kg) participated without any musculoskeletal …

Ergonomic risk and physiological assessment of plogging activity.

BACKGROUND: Plogging, an environment friendly trash workout is a combination of jogging with litter collection. People who are involved in the plogging carry a baggage for collecting the litter. Walking with a weight on one side causes the opposite side of the body to engage for stability and are also exposed to repetitive bending during the activity. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the postural and physiological aspects of plogging activity. METHODS: Thirty six subjects performed the litter collection in stoop, semi-squat, full squat and lunge postures respectively. Pos…

Predictors of vertigo in patients with untreated vestibular schwannoma.

OBJECTIVES: Previous studies have shown that vertigo is the most powerful negative predictor of quality of life in patients with vestibular schwannomas, but the variability in vertigo symptom severity is still poorly understood. We wanted to find out whether vertigo could be related to objective parameters such as tumor size, location, vestibular nerve function, hearing, and postural stability in patients with untreated vestibular schwannomas. STUDY DESIGN: Baseline data from prospective cohort study. SETTING: Tertiary referral center. PATIENTS: Four hundred thirty-four consecutive patients

Art and dystonia.

Dystonia has a recent history in medicine. Focal dystonia was described in the 19th century by classic authors including Gowers, whilst generalized dystonia was described at the turn of the century. However, it is possible to find precise descriptions of dystonia in art, centuries before the medical definition. We have reviewed several pieces of art (sculpture, painting and literature) across the history that might represent descriptions of dystonia, from ancient period to nowadays. In classic times, the first reference to abnormal postures can be tracked back to the new Empire of Egypt (equin…

Visuo-proprioceptive interactions in degenerative cervical spine diseases requiring surgery.

Cervical proprioception plays a key role in postural control, but its specific contribution is controversial. Postural impairment was shown in whiplash injuries without demonstrating the sole involvement of the cervical spine. The consequences of degenerative cervical spine diseases are underreported in posture-related scientific literature in spite of their high prevalence. No report has focused on the two different mechanisms underlying cervicobrachial pain: herniated discs and spondylosis. This study aimed to evaluate postural control of two groups of patients with degenerative cervical spi…

Does anticipation of back pain predispose to back trouble?

Limb movement imparts a perturbation to the body. The impact of that perturbation is limited via anticipatory postural adjustments. The strategy by which the CNS controls anticipatory postural adjustments of the trunk muscles during limb movement is altered during acute back pain and in people with recurrent back pain, even when they are pain free. The altered postural strategy probably serves to protect the spine in the short term, but it is associated with a cost and is thought to predispose spinal structures to injury in the long term. It is not known why this protective strategy might occu

Suppression of eye movements improves balance.

The aim of this study was to investigate the possible interaction of vestibulo-ocular and vestibulo-spinal functions. Spontaneous eye movements and anterior-posterior and lateral body sway were recorded simultaneously in 10 patients with vestibular neuritis (Experiment 1) and in 11 healthy subjects (Experiment 2) while all subjects wore a mask that allowed fixation of a head-fixed target. For the healthy subjects, there was no significant difference in postural sway for the conditions of eyes open in darkness and fixation of the head-fixed target. For the patients, the question was whether tra

Sensory Reweighting System Differences on Vestibular Feedback With Increased Task Constraints in Individuals With and Without Chronic Ankle Instability.

CONTEXT: Chronic ankle instability (CAI) is associated with a less flexible and adaptable sensorimotor system. Thus, individuals with CAI may present an inadequate sensory reweighting system, inhibiting their ability to place more emphasis (upweight) on reliable sensory feedback to control posture. However, how individuals with CAI reweight sensory feedback to maintain postural control in bilateral and unilateral stances has not been established. OBJECTIVES: To examine (1) group differences in how the sensory reweighting system changes to control posture in a simple double-limb stance and a m…

Dual-task differences in individuals with chronic ankle instability: A systematic review with meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with Chronic Ankle Instability (CAI) demonstrate altered gait mechanics, impaired proprioception, and decreased postural control. In addition, individuals with CAI have been found to have complex neurophysiological changes, including during dual-task perturbations. However, the results of studies on whether cognitive tasks affect postural control are inconclusive. RESEARCH QUESTION: Do individuals with CAI have worse dual-task performance compared to healthy controls? METHODS: We searched 4 electronic databases (PubMed, MEDLINE, Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied

Time of day and athlete status effects on the modified clinical test of sensory integration and balance (mCTSIB) and stability evaluation test (SET).

BACKGROUND: Concussions or musculoskeletal injuries may impair postural control, which is one diagnostic to help determine return-to-activity decisions. Postural control may be affected by diurnal rhythm. RESEARCH QUESTION: Does time of day influence postural control as measured by two Neurocom Balance Master diagnostic protocols, the Modified Clinical Test of Sensory Interaction on Balance (mCTSIB) and the Stability Evaluation Test (SET)? METHODS: Following Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval, consented participants completed the SET and mCTSIB twice: between 0700 and 1000; and betwee

Incidence rates of Guillain Barré (GBS), chronic fatigue/systemic exertion intolerance disease (CFS/SEID) and postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) prior to introduction of human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccination among adolescent girls in Finland, 2002-2012.

BACKGROUND: In Finland a vaccination programme against human papillomavirus (HPV) was introduced in November 2013 for girls aged 11-12 years with a catchup for girls 13-15 years. Allegations that HPV vaccine is causing Guillain Barré syndrome (GBS) and non-specific diagnostic entities, such as chronic fatigue syndrome/systemic exertion intolerance disease (CFS/SEID) and postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS), continue to surface. We examined population register-based incidence rates of CFS/SEID, GBS and POTS to provide baseline data for future HPV vaccine safety evaluations. METHODS
